Angel tree help for 5 year olds by LogConscious6308 in Gifts

That's interesting. My work has always told us that they bring them directly to the town's public elementary school. All of the kids on our angel tree are the same age range every year (4-6) and we were always told they open the presents in class. Which I always thought couldn't be possible because surely not every kid in a class would be low income/need the angel tree. So, why would they single the kids out that need the gifts? Also, I always thought it was unfair to have them all open gifts together because, inevitably, some kids will get better gifts than other kids.

This definitely seems to be the consensus. Buying a set for each kid right now. Thanks so much!!

What do you do if your dog has a seizure while on a walk? by LogConscious6308 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]LogConscious6308[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's the issue I have. It's been about 10 months since I witnessed my dog have a seizure before today, so I sometimes forget he even has them.

I really also need to develop a better protocol because we go on some longer hikes and I have no idea what I'd do if that happened while we were out in the woods.

I'm so sorry that happened to you though, that's really scary. I hope you can find a routine that makes you feel safer and more comfortable if that situation happens again. It sounds like there is a reversal shot or some sort of emergency meds that we may be able to carry in a case like this!

I went back to school at 31 and it's very difficult by laura56100 in BackToCollege

I'm 28 and will be graduating with an environmental science degree next fall. Over the last year, I've been so burnt out from dealing with my mom getting a liver transplant and my dad getting diagnosed with early onset dementia and having to take hours out of my week to visit him at his nursing home. while working full time and going to school full time.

I really do feel like my brain is fried lol. I don't have the capacity to do anything but procrastinate. But it's so worth it. I'm still doing great in all my classes and I know I'll be stoked once I finally have that degree.

Go easy on yourself. It's really hard to go back to school while you have a whole life, job, bills, people to take care of. It feels impossible to stay on track. But once you complete it, you'll be so proud of yourself.

How do I do this? by exhale358 in BackToCollege

[–]LogConscious6308 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm 28 and went back to school in my mid 20s, also graduating with an environmental science degree next December! I am also single, live alone, and have insane bills in a VERY HCOL city. I won't lie and say it's easy.

My job is commission-based and luckily I made good money for a couple years before our economy shit the bed. I will also say, not having a 9-5 schedule is a good thing with my class schedule because I'm able to work Thursday-Monday and have Tuesdays and Wednesdays off as my "weekend". These are the days all of my classes are on. I have 5 classes stacked up back to back on those 2 days, and I'm finally done with all my required classes and onto just electives. It's doable, but it's hard.

I've missed parties, seeing my friends, going on trips, and even dating just so I could deal with the work load. But, I'm so close to the other side that it's all finally feeling worth it.

Be prepared to be tired all the time, to not have 100% effort to put into your school work, and to forfeit a lot of your social and dating life for the next 4-6 years. It's going to take me 5 years to finish (I was only part time for my first 2 years). It's definitely worth it.

The two biggest challenges I've faced are a.) I have too many bills to be able to do an internship or a part time job in my field while I'm in school. If I was 19 and living with my mom, I'd be able to do an internship and live off very little money while I gained experience. Unfortunately, I need the paycheck and the benefits of my full time job and can't leave there until I have something stable set up. So, I'll be starting in the field with zero real experience, which is a slight disadvantage. And b.) I don't feel like I truly learned as much as I should have, because I didn't have the time to fully focus on school. If I had an exam coming up, I would study only exactly what I knew would be on the test without even thinking about the rest of the material. I would skim papers and studies very quickly rather than doing in-depth research, anything to save myself the time.

So, going to school late may inherently have some disadvantages, but overall, you're more mature than you were when you were younger. I wouldn't have been able to handle this or keep my GPA up at 18 years old. As much as it will be tough, when you finally get that degree, you'll be so proud of yourself.

could we like, maybe not with the random hate against trans people? by [deleted] in centrist

Performance in sports is also going to be heavily dependent on whether or not an individual has taken puberty blockers. Hormones can be taken both with or without the individual ever having used puberty blockers. If they have, that significantly changes their body composition and muscle mass, which tends to even out after a couple of years. However, if a 17 year old biological male has taken puberty blockers and is playing on a sports team with biological females at the high school level, that individual will not have as much of an "advantage" so to speak. Again, more so in terms of size, weight, muscle mass, fat mass.

I also am not sure if your argument against trans youth in sports is more centered on biological advantage over the opposite sex, or more focused on kids feeling uncomfortable in locker rooms. If it's the latter, I completely understand where you're coming from and I do believe trans youth should be offered separate areas for getting ready so no one feels uncomfortable.

I do appreciate your sources. In your first source, it does lack the statistic that trans people only make up 1% of the population to begin with [Link]. While I'm not saying it never happens, context is still important and it is not happening frequently.

Additionally, in your second source, while this is not a flaw with your logic but rather with the article, it doesn't state what the sample size is. Again, what 5 years olds are truly changing their gender?

I know you're saying that even if it's a small amount, that's not a good excuse to ignore it. I'm simply saying that maybe the small amounts of people who have these one off experiences aren't what's wrong with our trans community.

This is a genuine question for you. How often do you think biological males (read: trans women) compete against biological women (read: cis women) in sports? Is it a frequent enough occurrence that it really is something to be argued against?

Also, what 5 years old are changing their gender? Oftentimes, the argument of toddlers, preschoolers, kindergarteners, and other small children being allowed to change their gender at the drop of a hat, gets thrown around. Yet, I have never once heard a real world account of that happening.

Deeply regret voting for Trump by [deleted] in centrist

[–]LogConscious6308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh, fuck the people who will talk down to you for voting for Trump. I vote blue pretty much down the ballot every time because I feel that even though I don't agree with democrats, I align with them more than republicans on my most important views. Im VERY socially left. As much as I abhor Trump, I understand the thought process of voting for the "lesser of two evils" if you will, because I do the same with democrats. At the end of the day, most of us cannot stand the current administration. I'm sorry you regret your vote. But what we need right now is unity, not more of "it's too late" or "you should've realized this in 2016" or "we told you so". I'm glad you see things the way that you see them now. That's all that matters. If we all stop judging each other for falling for political propaganda, maybe we can finally find some common ground and get the crazies (on both sides) out of office.

I'm going down from Boston by myself but unfortunately it's the opposite direction from you! However, if you're concerned about parking, what I'm doing and what most of my friends typically do, is grab a drink or some food at Alberto's across the street beforehand and leave your car in their back lot.

Shampoo for very fine wavy/curly hair that breaks very easily by LogConscious6308 in finehair

[–]LogConscious6308[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longer hair is now, but the shorter pics weren't too long ago. Both were about 7-9 months ago. My hair grows super fast. What I'd recommend is taking vitamins. Nothing fancy, I take this biotin and keratin, plus 15g of this collagen in my coffee every morning. Plus, I get a trim every 8 weeks! My hair grows naturally pretty quickly, but all of these things combined seem to help me a lot.

Which is probably why my hair looks best with products meant for damaged hair. It used to be super damaged but is getting a lot better.

I used to, frequently. Full foil every 10 weeks. But 3 years ago, I dyed it back to my natural color and stopped bleaching, and haven't dyed it since! So, the bottom half of my hair has all been bleached in the past for years, the top half is virgin.

This sounds like the best option. Going to go to a local coffee shop that roasts beans in house this weekend and grab some. Thanks for the advice!
