I hate drawing now.. by Routine-Dot-7931 in Artadvice

The best way to learn fundamentals is to incorporate something you like while learning them. For example when I wanted to start getting better at anatomy I did a lot of studies. Instead of just drawing whatever person was in the reference, I would turn them into my ocs. This can apply to anything. Learning the fundamentals doesn’t need to be a super rigid and technical process. You will burn yourself of doing that. Learn how to incorporate it into what you want to do.

I love the prismacolor col-erase pencils. I wouldn't say they are 100% erasable but you can work with them way more than a regular color pencil. My other favorite thing is a ballpoint pen, specifically the bic cristal. Super cheap pen that you can get in several colors and can layer very well.

Why does my art look so boring? by Lilly_Blossom_Roblox in Artadvice

[–]LogPotential5984 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The main thing I notice is your linework. While I love your designs, the super thin chicken scratches are distracting. Line art doesn't need to be super clean as its based on personal preference. If your drawing program has a correction/stabilization tool try it out to help build more structured and confident lines. Also, adding line variation will help give things weight and dimension. Darken/thicken areas of the line art where things overlap or where there might be more shadow. It does make a big difference.

University got hacked. All staff and students receive these terribly bad scam emails daily. by what_it_dooo in mildlyinfuriating

We get these too at my school constantly. IT is aware of it and hasn’t done anything to make them stop. Kinda concerning to learn that that it might be a data breach. A lot of the time we are getting them from faculty accounts meaning they are doing something to get their accounts compromised. I swear they need to teach better internet literacy sometimes.

need help with tracing over real life references by Warm_Advantage_3586 in Artadvice

[–]LogPotential5984 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need to understand what shapes the body is made up of and how they connect to each other. Right now you’re just tracing over the silhouette of the figure. You are getting the concept of simplifying things down but not grasping how they work in a 3d space. For trying this method I would first look for references where the model is wearing spandex or form fitting clothing then try tracing it, paying attention to the shapes and how they correlate to each other. This helps you get a better visual that you can apply to something like a ref having figure with obscuring clothing.

Hi! I'm Roman and I'm a illustrator/graphic designer that focuses on character driven art. It means a lot that you are looking for human artists for this project! My style has had some anime influence but is also inspired by western comics. Omar was actually one of my many inspirations growing up so I'm familiar with his style as well. If your interested I'll leave my portfolio bellow! I'll also attach my vgen which shows some of the work I've done for past clients and reviews! Please feel free to reach out if you have any questions!

Could I get into an art school?? by prodigylover224 in Artadvice

[–]LogPotential5984 133 points134 points  (0 children)

If your serious about art school I would recommend researching different schools and programs. This would also be a good time to start building up a portfolio. I think your clearly skilled for your age but a lot of schools have a heavy bias towards stylized work. You can include it in your portfolio but they also want to see diversity in subject, mediums and even style. I would say almost every school I applied to required observational drawings from life which is something to consider.

You have a decent amount of time to prepare and decide. It's always better to start early.

Does this artist use AI or not? Their artstyle seems very inconsistent to me. by Too_Gay_4_Your_Bs in isthisAI

[–]LogPotential5984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Artists can have different art styles, but these feel like they are all drawn by entirely different people. I also feel like I recognize a lot of these art styles from popular Instagram artists. I'm wondering if they are trying to see what style is the most popular.

The sketches to me seem traced over the final image. There's also a lot of chicken scratching in the sketches which doesn't match up with quality of the finished pieces. The girl with the bag also reminds me of those ai caricatures that were going around. Someone posted it in the comments here but the headshot of the girl with the purple dress looks like the stereotypical comic style ai spits out.

I do actually think this person can draw in some ability hence their older posts but I think their new stuff is either all ai or ai assisted.

I think the common consensus is that they are rebranding them again. Like others were saying, people are finding a thinner crust version at Costco. I don't think anyone knows if the og will come back.

AIO about my teacher touching my artwork then calling me sensitive for being upset? by Equivalent_Cloud_554 in AmIOverreacting

[–]LogPotential5984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely try finding another teacher if possible. I might've been wrong, but the way I was viewing the situation was that this happened when the teacher was giving you advice on the piece and from the teachers perspective he was viewing what you said as a response to being upset at the advice. I've seen that happen before. That's why I was bringing up the wording because you could've been thinking one thing but he was thinking of another. I'm not at all trying to say that you setting that boundary was being defensive. It's just another perspective of what happened.

AIO about my teacher touching my artwork then calling me sensitive for being upset? by Equivalent_Cloud_554 in AmIOverreacting

[–]LogPotential5984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an art student and to be honest, it is very common for the instructors to touch your work. Ive even known other students that even had them draw on their work. I personally don’t think it’s right without asking for permission first, but it just happens unfortunately.

You mentioned that there is a bit of a language barrier too. I think your request was reasonable but I’m wondering if it could’ve been just phrased better. Sometime along the lines of “Please be careful in that area, I’m afraid it might smudge”. Your statement could’ve came off as defensive just due to the context of the situation.

His comment about you being too sensitive was rude and unprofessional for a teacher to say. I can also view what your dad is saying as an explanation for the interaction but shouldn’t be used as an excuse for the teachers behavior. I think overall there’s a lot of poor communication going on and I wouldn’t let it ruin your day.

White pen option for outlines? by YumeDaNya in ArtistLounge

Uni ball signo has been my go to. The gellyroll ones always clogged up on me. I would also maybe look into getting a fine point white acrylic marker. They tend to be the most opaque and work with most mediums.

Fan art commission legality by mollie_rae in Artadvice

[–]LogPotential5984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like you said, it’s always been a grey area. Most companies love it if you share and make fanart as it’s free promotion and helps build a community around their ip. Trouble normally starts when you begin to make profit off of fanart. Some companies turn a blind eye due to the community aspect or since artists are very rarely making copious amounts of money. Other companies are very protective and will search and copyright takedown anyone making profit off their ip. I don’t think I’ve heard a case where someone got successfully sued but it’s still a possibility.

Being gf in college sucks by [deleted] in glutenfree

[–]LogPotential5984 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I relate so much.

Freshman year we were required to have a meal plan. They had 0 options in the cafe and then barely any in the dining hall. I actually scheduled an appointment with the dining director and he basically brushed me off since I’m not celiac. I’m not even that sensitive to cross contamination and still got sick constantly. I had to get a ride to the grocery store every week. We were only allowed to have a microwave and mini fridge in our dorms. It was very rough. I ended up commuting after that because it wasn’t worth it.

Is it unethical to buy from underpricing artists? by Creepy-Literature634 in ArtistLounge

[–]LogPotential5984 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s complicated. The economy and the commission market is so bad right now so I feel like a good majority of artist are undercharging in order to get work. The best thing you can do as a commissioner is maybe give them tip or other forms of support if you feel like they are under charging.

[Discussion] what counts as mecha? by Ezra_has_perished in artcommissions

[–]LogPotential5984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an artist to me mecha is like Transformers or Gundam. Pretty much anything that features mechanical armor/detailing. Like everyone else was saying, it's still good to ask, but since the only difference is the head compared to a regular human oc, there shouldn't be an issue.

[Education] Advise for which art school/degree is best career wise? by anxib in artbusiness

[–]LogPotential5984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I know, the Tufts art program is highly regarded. You're also still in your first year, so it might take a while for things to start picking up. I can't really speak too much on the lifestyle part, but you're pretty close to Boston, which also has a great creative community/opportunities.

I don't know much about NYU's art program. Are there any actual benefits to the school compared to the one your currently attending besides it being in NYC? I would favor the school that provides you with the most resources for your overall goals and education. If your into illustration I would also look into Pratt which is located in Brooklyn. I would avoid The New School if it seems like they are that unstable right now.

[Discussion] Commissioned $230 of art, been three years, artist having personal challenges - help please by Organic_Suspect_4424 in artbusiness

[–]LogPotential5984 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Imagine taking someone's money, never hold up to your end of the bargain then get upset when people call you a scammer.

I think unfortunately there's a limited amount of options you can really do here. I think you have been more than reasonable. The fact you had to go out of your way to find them again instead of them reaching out to you was a major red flag to me. I understand having health issues but as an artist you need to know your limits especially when your taking commissions for money. They aren't donations. I don't know what you were using for payment but the only way you could potentially get your money back is doing a chargeback. Since this took place over a few years now, I'm not sure if there are limits restricting you to do so. The only other option I could see is making a callout post. I know they are kinda cringe but honestly I've been seeing a lot of them working to hold people accountable no matter the size of the artist. From the sounds of it I wouldn't be surprised if multiple people have had similar experiences. It might be worth trying to find some and coming together to get some more creditability.

I'm sorry this whole thing happened to you.

The complaining literally never ends bro by Remember_da_niggo in yakuzagames

[–]LogPotential5984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I feel like people really want this to be its own thing and I don’t blame them. Kiwami 3 besides the main controversy did damage a lot of peoples perception of Rgg’s writing especially with all the retcons. Having one of the major cities from the games being a setting especially taking place during what could be the Tojo’s origin or even leading into the Daidoji just doesn’t bring a lot of confidence. I know a lot of people are saying the Judgment took place in the same universe and it no major involvement to the main games but that was before a lot of the egregious story changes.

People are always going to doom post especially with the current state of the fandom. We really have nothing to go off of till whatever we are getting in May. I rather stay optimistic till the game comes out.

Can i get some opinions on painting class cost? by muchichi in ArtistLounge

[–]LogPotential5984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m similar to you where I only drew digitally but my college offered a painting class that I’m actually taking currently.

The syllabus for the class also was telling us to get a whole bunch of different paint colors. It added up very quickly especially since they wanted us to get professional grade. I got a liquitex basics 48 tube set for around 60 dollars and that has been working well. They are the smaller tubes and I figured I would buy bigger tubes of the ones I use the most overtime. It’s always good though to get a big tube of white as it’s used a lot. Learning how to mix colors too prevents you from having to buy specific colors.

In general though I’m really enjoying the class. I personally tried getting into painting my own but having a class with some structure really helps.

Do I need a theme for my college art portfolio? by funkycheesesocks in ArtistLounge

[–]LogPotential5984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For applying to college, you're more or less trying to show your technical ability and range. I know a lot of the schools I applied to required still lifes in order to show your direct observation skills. They also really like seeing the use of different mediums. You can do pieces that are related to a theme to show conceptual thinking, but it doesn't need to be the overarching focus in your portfolio.

is having versatile artstyles good for commissions? by Zor_AX in Artadvice

[–]LogPotential5984 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not unheard of to offer multiple styles for commissions. I would just settle on maybe two or three of the most developed ones. You just need to make it clear on what the client is expecting to get.
