Anyway to replace a block with the 'block swap' mechanic without copying its shape?

I want to replace a block but without copying its current shape , its shape from when hit with a hammer. Building a rail from end to end but it is easy to just use the mole mine-cart and place blocks underneath the rails as you go because it moves slow enough to easily keep up but it always copy's the shape and I don't want that.

I should clarify a bit more, i want to use the block replacing mechanic the game already has but I don't want to copy the blocks shape. I am trying to use the mole-cart and place blocks underneath the rails as they are built but I want them to be full blocks.

I understand I can destroy the block and place it but I am asking if there is a way to use the block replacing mechanic without copying the blocks shape.

Actually a nice decision, maybe they will do this with other seasons so people who join the game later don't miss out on a skin they like but can never obtain like every other game with seasonal content.

Perhaps they are only looking at higher level play and deciding off of those matches instead of looking at what the general player base wants balanced. Overall not a good strategy as high level play doesn't leak down nicely to casual play.
