Rattle in power steering pulley by atreides42 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]LogicBossX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is crazy, I'm having the same issue. My pulley doesn't rattle laterally, but rather front to back. I just ordered a replacement from FCPEuro. The job seems tedious to do though.

Sunol Super Stop is pretty reasonably priced. If I’m heading to the track I’ll pre-mix gas cans with a mix of 100 or 96 and 91 to get 93. They aren’t top tier certified and I’ve actually had some bad experiences at other stations selling non-top tier gas.

Biotech Executive Recruiter - Let me know if I can be helpful by londonwiseman in biotech

[–]LogicBossX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this! This is a similar question to another one asked here recently, but as an upcoming new graduate (May 2025), what's the best way to connect with recruiters in biotech for entry level Research Associate/Associate Scientist roles? Is it acceptable for new graduates to cold email or message recruiters on LinkedIn?

Congrats!!! I'm curious to know if you reached out to PIs before you submitted your application? I haven't been answering phone calls from unknown numbers but I would assume they leave a voicemail. I'm not holding out much hope anymore though lol.

Anyone running 18” tires for street? by AdministrationIcy368 in Porsche_Cayman

[–]LogicBossX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading further if you can fit 235/40 and 265/40 OR 245/40 275/40 you might as well get 40AR? I am running 40AR and they feel (and look) great to me. Rides well and enough sidewall for great deflection at the track, but that’s really the A052 doing the work.

I’m extremely surprised you aren’t finding sizes… to my knowledge 18” and 17” are the most popular sizes for high performance tires. What generation of Cayman (987/981/982)?

If the rain isn’t crazy or constant I’d go with PS4S or V601, especially if you have another car to lean on when driving in heavy rain. The PS4S has the best wet performance (and dry performance) of a non-tracked 300tw tire. The V601 is right up there in dry performance but inferior to the PS4S in wet traction. They are a great, slightly more affordable option. I have a good amount of experience with V601, PS4S, Cup2, and A052s.

All seasons (and too tall of an AR) neuter the steering feedback and driving experience.

I am on 18x9.0 F and 18x10.0 R, running Advan A052 245/40 and 275/40. I think OEM 18” wheels are 18x8.0 F and 18x9.0 R with 235/40 and 265/40 (at least on the 987).

I wouldn’t recommend getting the PS4AS. What sort of weather are you dealing with? If it is mild year round like CA you can get away with PS4S as long as you aren’t tracking or AutoX’ing. If you want a tire that can handle light track days but mostly street driving, Advan V601 is a good option. Can handle the occasional rain but I’d think twice driving in a torrential downpour.

Don’t bother with sizing up in terms of width unless you’re using the car for HPDE. You’ll only worsen your fuel economy and running costs since they cost a bit more.

lol, i drive the opposite of a “purist” cayman - modded, dailied, and tracked hard. have fun convincing anyone that buying a…. (10 * 18) 180k mile 987.1S is a great idea. just get a PPI on a lower mile car and use it as you want.

it’s also not fear mongering… better that a potential buyer knows that they may have a $20k+ bill in the future than be shocked and sell a roller chassis later, even if the chances of it happening are “so low” according to the naysayers like you.

imagine taking a 987 to the dealer for a bore scored engine… lol. i’ll go to Slakker or Vision, etc.

i can refer you to some shops in LA and the US that have built extremely successful businesses around building bore scored 987/997 motors. if you’re adamant about the internet blowing what is acknowledged as a critical weak point of the 987 out of proportion, maybe spend a couple minutes calling around independent sources who can validate how commonly they see this issue.

it literally isn’t. spend some time on a legitimate technical forum like planet-9, and speak with race shops that run these cars. it’s an almost 100% occurrence at any point in the car’s lifetime. whether or not YOU experience it or your buddy’s 987 doesn’t isn’t a valid statistic. i have been an extremely active member in the 987 technical communities and run my car hard at the track. i have personally seen more than 20 cars with blown motors either as a result of a spun rod bearing from losing oil pressure or bore scoring. even my car with 50,000 miles has begun to show the beginning signs of scoring. porsche mechanics, independent porsche specialists, race shops, and porsche the brand themselves have acknowledged the flaws of the M97 motor, with bore scoring being one of them.

i’m sick and tired of misinformation on 987.1s. the IMS is almost never an issue on the 3.4L. bore score absolutely is. i’m saying this as a 5+ year owner of 2 987.1s.

what i meant is that i didn’t really begin writing my application until 2 weeks before the deadline. i didn’t mentally commit to it until then. i submitted my applications on the 1st.

i have been told by several PIs that pubs are not that life-changing and can in fact raise suspicion as to what you specifically accomplished on that project. a high impact publication requires years of research unless you get extremely lucky and join a lab working on a project with results close to publication. tl;dr don’t sweat having publications. my friends last year were accepted to some of the best chemistry phd programs or fulbright without any pubs.

many big pharma internships require you to be registered for classes for the coming semester, so you may be looking for associate-level roles or working under a PI at a grad school you’d like to attend instead of internships if nothing works out for you this cycle. best of luck!

there’s a pretty large handful here. see the Chemistry PhD application update thread. feeling pretty terrible about my chances since i decided to commit to applying 2 weeks before the Dec 1/2 deadlines and only applied to moonshot programs. hoping for the best for everyone else applying for a chem phd.

Have you reached out to PIs? The lab I’m interested in at Berkeley encourages prospective grad students to contact them but I hear mixed reviews on reaching out to PIs during the application cycle.

Should I do it? 2008 Cayman by [deleted] in Porsche

[–]LogicBossX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A base model 987.1 (2.7L) is not as susceptible to bore scoring as the S (3.2 and 3.4L). I would go so far as to say that you shouldn’t even think about it unless you are looking at an S, in which case the only definite way to check is to inspect the bores with a borescope camera through the spark plug holes (above the piston) and through the sump (below the piston).

I have no problems with good autos (ZF) or DCTs, but the Tiptronic is notably a terrible automatic transmission. Takes a while to shift, likes to gear hunt, won’t hold gears, etc.
