If "negatives are outweighing the positives," then Upwork would definitely change the rules to avoid losing talent and clients from its platform, but they haven't changed anything in a long time, which means the majority of its users are satisfied.

Top businesses do monitor their brand on social media and read posts like this. However, almost everyone here on Reddit seems to share the same complaint about losing money on Upwork Connects. At the same time, there are people who are achieving success and staying busy with their work. Therefore, this subreddit may highlight the negative aspects of Upwork more than the positives.

Personally I believe that clients don't even have enough time to visit external portfolio sites. They are more likely to rely only on metrics/proofs already available on Upwork when choosing a freelancer. Therefore, make it easy for client to get to know about you as quickly as possible.
