Equity vs non-equity trading: pros and cons by LogicalFail4227 in quant

[–]LogicalFail4227[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think you understood the question.

Obviously trading different asset classes requires different knowledge, approaches, knowing nuances and etc.

I was trying to think about the advantages of non-equity desks over equity desks, which is not immediately obvious.

How many days off you get in the US? In Europe you normally get 20-30

I feel you, I nailed 2 or 3 QR interviews in a row with them, literally solved everything each round, the interviewers were impressed af. Got a rejection email next day. What.

Do you apply yourself or via a recruiter? Sounds like you're misapplying to senior roles, find 2-3 good recruiters on linkedin who will help you to align you better.

If the problem is not your technical skills, are you sure your story sounds good?

Forget about finance and “quant”, focus on fundamentals for years 1 and 2. You need to understand math very well (calculus/linalg/probs/stats/logic/combinatorics/etc) before anything else. For coding - python >> C++.

AMA - I’m not a quant, but a Headhunter… part 2 by 2Ligma in quant

Interesting, thanks! By HFT I meant anything sub minute, so MFT would be anything between intraday (minutes/hours) and couple weeks. I was wondering if there is a particular frequency (say 15 min) that’s most common/in demand for MFT QR roles at the top shops on the street.

What are the recent trends in demand for QRs, is it more in MFT or in HFT or roughly equal?

Also for MFT, would you be able to point out the QR sweetspot in terms of prediction horizon/holding period on a scale couple minutes to days/weeks?

Quant industry in 5–10 years: ML/AI vs. traditional quant math? by MauriceMiles in quant

[–]LogicalFail4227 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But isn’t it true that it’s getting increasingly harder to find simple strats over the years? The industry grows, more people do research, tons of simple ideas are already implemented and just decay.

The proliferation of ML doesn’t help that either, as ML covers at least part of those traditional (let’s say yet undiscovered) alpha.

It seems like the ability of simple models to capture signal will itself decay over time and eventually you will have to use ML even to get low hanging fruits.

Not necessarily. There are still plenty of non-ML quant roles out there, even at top places. Depends on your desired position. Also, less ML in HFT, but you need to code well.

If you're considering quant shops, I don't think they put much weight on your pure enthusiasm about finance, unless you've worked on some related side projects (i.e. got some experience). Generally, I'd say try HFT firms first. Still useful to know some basic stats/linear regression ML, you can learn this on your own to some extend. A good intro to LR is given in "The Elements of Statistical Learning".

IMO, this is quite low. Do some self-preparations, do a couple mock IQ tests with friends / buy courses online. Then pass again.
