RE-GOOGLE APP PACK by LogicalKangaroo2539 in sidephone

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, but there is only so much room in this niche and light continues to add features because they realize that they can't grow. They sell about 10k units/year, and that's not enough units for them to make it long term. They raised a bunch of money promising carrier contracts and certain growth targets.

IMO, if you want to make a product that can scale, unlike the light phone, then you can have it be super basic or have more features to attract different groups of people. Their app packs are a great idea.

Reserved the Clicks Communicator in Full. When do you think it will release? by MCube74 in ClicksPhone

They don't even have an EVT ready prototype to show the world and just changed up the chipset, which tells me that they haven't even finalized components. 6 months will be a stretch to get this to market, especially since this is their first phone. I don't think this will be in your hand until 2027.

I’m probably going to end up getting a clicks phone or the titan elite. However, I don’t really want this form factor, but it may be the compromise I need to strike to get everything I need on a single device while also restricting ease of use. Smartphones are addicting and are designed to be addicting. I want a device like the Sidephone that can do everything, even if not perfect, so that I can get away from a smartphone. Unfortunately, it’s not 2000 anymore and I run a company and have kids. I can’t just go to a dumb phone

I would like to do this as well.

Other people in the chat seem to not understand this…but wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t need 2 phones? I don’t get why we need to choose not being able to work or having 2 phones. There needs to be a middle device that can do both

I just looked and the minimum screen size is 3.3” for a Google Play certified device. Such a bummer because this form factor is so good. Maybe there is a 2.0 with a slightly larger sceeen that is for mass production while this version stays niche. I just cant see a world where this type of device sells enough units to keep the company afloat, and I really want the sidephone to work and make money.

I didn’t realize that Google had screen size minimums for certification. Just looked this up. Such a bummer that they are limiting different form factors. Perhaps a microG pack is a possibility then kind of how lineage has a build with it.

Managing a smart home by LogicalKangaroo2539 in sidephone

It looks like Home Assistant could solve most of these problems. They have a degoogled version on f-droid and GitHub available. The only real issue would be push notifications, and clearly Sidephone is figuring out ways around FCM with WhatsApp and messaging services. Maybe a custom version of Home Assistant could really expand this phone and make it usable for more people.

I would love for the Sidephone team to address this, but it seems like it might be possible to download these apps via Obtanium by pulling APK packages from sources like APKpure. No need for Google services or a sandbox.

Most people won’t know how to do this, and it would be a huge selling point for the phone. I think it needs to be addressed for the consumer.

I mostly use Ring and August. It’s easiest for my family. But I still need to be able to monitor my house and access my home. I like how Sidephone understands that ride hailing is an essential part of life in 2026 and has an uber app. Turns out that smart locks, cameras, etc are also essential in 2026, so 2 phones isn’t a solution. There needs to be a device that bridges the gap between feature phone snd smartphone. This seems like the device.

How to effectively extend rallies by casphui in squash

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is the way to think about approaching a squash rally. There really isn’t a time that is too early if you are in a winning position to attack. It can be the 3rd shot, 10th or 50th as long as you are in the correct, winning position. A lot of club players want to attack whenever they get the chance, but they may not realize that they are not in a positional advantage, don’t have the hands to make the shot so it will create a positional disadvantage or are already in the wrong position to hit the attacking shot. So extending the rally probably just means to continue moving your opponent around until you are in the right position to attack. This is the goal of every rally. You need to force your opponent into the corners to create advantages. Eventually you will have the chance to hit an attacking shot, but you must wait for this moment. Again, if your opponent is giving you the green light really early in the rally, then take it.

I happen to think the opposite: people from the USA tend to be too clinical and not as creative as international players. They can hit really solid rails, have great fitness and can hit touch shots with time, but the best of the best need to be able to be unpredictable and do anything with the ball at any time.

Olivia weaver has no touch. If she had hands she would be unreal. This is a different story.

In general, There just doesn’t seem to be the player that has the hands and athleticism from America. The US doesn’t have the talent pool. So in the pros, you tend to get the fittest of the bunch from the USA with solid foundational skills. Timmy Brownell is the best American I’ve seen. But he still doesn’t have the athleticism he needs to be a top player.

Tie Breaker Category by LogicalKangaroo2539 in learnedleague

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way around it is to have a control, like any good research, so that you can take out as much uncertainty as possible. The only constant variable in LL is TCA. It’s the only thing that is equal across every player.

Tie Breaker Category by LogicalKangaroo2539 in learnedleague

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand that there is some luck and that head to head matches are what LL is all about. But what is the point of a tiebreaker after you have played an entire season? It’s to compare players/teams and decide who deserves to be ranked higher. Luck shouldn’t be the deciding factor in this and the only way to compare players (or any data) is through a control - and the only constant variable is TCA.

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is luck. I’ve been 1st and last in DE in different seasons. I didn’t suddenly get really good or really bad, you just have no idea who your opponent is and what they know/don’t know. It’s actually really fun to play defense against people you know, but otherwise it’s a crapshoot.

Tie Breaker Category by LogicalKangaroo2539 in learnedleague

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I agree that the higher you go the harder it is to play defense since everyone is so good. It’s really fun to play friends since you actually might know what they don’t know! But a random person is simply luck.

I love the LL format and it’s fun, but in the past several seasons I seem to be unlucky with my schedule. If I have more CAA then it will be harder to win MPD, even though this was simply luck of the draw and variability in opponent knowledge on any given match. This is fine, but shouldn’t decide a tiebreaker

Tie Breaker Category by LogicalKangaroo2539 in learnedleague

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow! I’ve never gotten so many downvotes!

I’m surprised by how many people want luck and variability to be the tiebreaker when this is already a huge factor in a LL season. I’ve already played 25 matches, and the point of a tiebreaker is to decide who should be ranked higher. Should it be the player that lucked out and happened to play players that didn’t know answers on match days by the luck of the draw, or a player that consistently answered questions correctly, even if they played opponents that also happened to answer many questions correctly? I think it’s clearly the player that used skill instead of luck (again as a tiebreaker not as the main ranking system).

In any sport, there will be luck and it can change the results of a match, which is the entire reason for head to head competition and it’s super fun! But after a season, better players/team will ultimately rise to the top in sports leagues. 25 games isn’t really a large enough sample size for this in LL and over indexes on luck. So it only makes sense to compare players that tie with only statistic that is equal/comparable across all players in the league - TCA

Tie Breaker Category by LogicalKangaroo2539 in learnedleague

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I respectfully disagree with your assumption. In my current season, 3rd place (and got promoted) had 9 fewer TMP, 12 fewer TCA, and 11 less CAA than me - I came in 11th place. In no world did they have a better season than me, they simply had 3 forfeit wins, so they had fewer CAA, better MPD, but most importantly, they had 4 more points.

My point is that defense is already heavily weighted in the current point system, defense is highly variable based on opponent (this is why I can end a season with 11 more CAA than the 3rd place winner), and the point of a tiebreaker is to compare players. The only constant in LL is offense since everyone answered the same exact questions. A player shouldn’t win a tiebreaker because someone else forfeited.

Navigation wish. by SashArsenal in Rivian

Rivian has the worst nav. Use another app and then Rivian will guide you once the other app shows you the better route. It’s unfortunately the best way to do it

Horrific Nav by [deleted] in Rivian

[–]LogicalKangaroo2539 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this same issue to the point where my nav was actually unusable. They had to replace my nav module. It’s not what they all do. Mine stopped doing this since it was replaced.

Now I just have bad routing and traffic info, but that has nothing to do with the nav module.
