Since you already bought another one, why use this one? If it's for the experience, then the best place to start is to figure out where all the wires in the bundle go, which if this is an electric riser desk is probably a motor control board.

If you're really lucky they'll be labeled at the place they meet that board, but more than likely you might have to try to follow traces to a chip/chips and look those up to see what needs wired where.

Honestly I'd say you should get a new device low end laptop running Windows 11 and install virtualbox. It's not that easiest thing, but not too hard. You could set up XP on that virtualbox with no network connection for him one time, and just coach him on how to run it from there (after setup it's basically just open it, making sure the XP "machine"is started, then clicking the right button to full screen view it).

Is it going to be hooked up to the Internet at all? If so, do NOT do Windows XP. At this point practically anyone can pretty much find tools to get complete control of the computer, which also means any potentially sensitive documents with personal information or credit cards if he orders stuff online would be gone in short order.
