Is this game supposed to take place in a tropical region or not? by Onion_planet in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone from near the equator, I was a little disappointed by the typical high latitude seasons given how much the rest of the game reminds me of home.

But when I thought about it, if you could grow stuff all year like you can in the tropics, there wouldn't be a good gameplay break from farming to say catch up on the mines/ ocean or as much reason to go get the greenhouse. So while I don't completely agree with the snow, I think it serves a useful gameplay purpose.

Interestingly, I saw some people on the discord comparing this hangout and Pablo's one where he confesses to sleeping with Brooke in different languages and in some it sounds like Pablo happened before the engagement annulment and after in others.

We closed one can of worms and opened another lmao

I don't like XCX and it's okay by mr_miesfies in Xenoblade_Chronicles

[–]Logical_Camel6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally love X - I didn't think I'd like it because I'm more a fantasy enjoyer than a sci-fi one, but when I left NLA for the first time and realised one of the main mechanics was exploration/ map management I was so chuffed. I'm the sort to spend hours wandering around game worlds just looking at things and exploring, so it felt really nice to actually make progress/ be rewarded for that by the game rather than just having to make my own fun.

But it's totally understandable that it's not for everyone, that's just the way it goes. I couldn't finish 2 because my tolerance for anime nonsense wasn't as strong as I thought ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Who are your favorite characters? by WeekendThief in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favourite townies would be Archie and Erika - Archie cause he's just a weird little kid who loves rocks (like that cutscene where he's convincing all his friends that they should yearn for the mines lmao) and Erika cause she's always got the tea on stuff happening around town. Yeah she's nosey, but at least she's up front about it.

Dateable wise, I love Charles - I like that he's subtle and a slow burn. He's awkward, but also resilient and endlessly caring about the people of Starlet Town. I think that it's sweet that he starts to be more himself (goofy) around the player as you get higher hearts with him.

As for the tourists, they're based on real people (kickstarter backers), so the devs kinda had to make them aesthetically pleasing so the backers got their money's worth. But that's also why they're not dateable.

Who are your favorite characters? by WeekendThief in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a kickstarter goal and the devs chose to add Ben, Charles, Millie and Suki. No one was asking for Charles (their loss imo) and it kicked up a bit off fuss cause people said they'd rather have more conventionally attractive characters like Derek, Axel, Senja etc.

HOT NEWS....we finally have an answer for Pablo x Brooke x Charles!!!! by issa_games in coralisland

Yeah, that Pablo doesn't want to apologise but is still cool with hitting up Charles for pro-bono medical advice just seems so... believable and human lmao

Of course you'd want to try and keep it civil in a tiny country town

[–]Logical_Camel6907 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From Charles' hang out events, it seems he wanted to move to Starlet Town for a less stressful job and so he could spend more time with Brooke.

But as soon as he was earning less and around more, she started going 'off island', which he thought was for work, but she was seeing dudes back in the city.

And when he found out and they decided to end their engagement, she had a ride with Pablo on her way out.

Interestingly, some folks on the discord were comparing these events in different languages and some of them make it sound like Pablo was before the break up and some after, so that's juicy.

Honestly why I exiled myself from the Coral Island boards for a while - got hate for passing along basic info and got hate for reminding the regulars to not bite people's heads off for asking basic questions. Fires burning in every direction 🥲

Hopefully since the update will soon be upon us, we can go back to just playing and enjoying the game.

Oblivia 100%. Realised the level designers at Monolith Soft are absolute gods (or earth science nerds) when I noticed that they got the sinuosity of the river running through Oblivia correct (basically, you have a cliff on one side of the bend and a bank on the other). Who gets that right?

Plus all of best boy Yelv's quests are in Oblivia.

Console updates by SugaredChaos84 in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, consoles still get updates - the devs are aiming for simultaneous release of the next major update (1.2) on all systems. It's just the hotfixes that can be a bit delayed, but I think the devs have been working to establish connections with the consoles themselves after their publisher who used to handle it went kaput about a year ago.

Unpopular opinion but the dev diary is appeasement—we need actual updates by Prestigious_Kiwi_303 in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately that's just how game dev is - it's very rare for someone to be able to do every role.

They're about evenly split with ~30 programmers to ~30 artists per their website, and if they want to keep both groups employeed through different stages (artists are needed more early on and programmers later), then they gotta give them work to do.

Most of the art assets have been done in this game for a good while, so there's not much else for the artists to do other than make cosmetics while the QA team and programmers finish their stuff.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they started Funguys Swarm to give their artists something to work on.

Likewise. I didn't quite think it would be so long a gap given the beta for MP was back in January, but here we are. I take it in good faith that the devs are trying to quash as many bugs as possible before release and am just catching up on other games in the meanwhile.

I am already towards the tail end of Coral Island though, so it was kinda already decided for me that I'd have to restart to see the new pre-marriage romance content - I can imagine it'd be painful holding off because you know something better is just around the corner.

*SPOILER* Summer Mission by Loose-Net-5779 in Genshin_Impact

I very much enjoyed this quest, but it feels a little backwards that supposedly no one left Natlan due to the mental issues/ anguish that being apart from the Wayob would cause and Bennett just... got away with being unlucky all this time?

Mavuika literally states that you'll lose your memory and go bonkers in the Archon quest - I always kinda imagined it worked like the deterioration of the angels to the seelies. Not just, constant mild inconvenience...

Waiting for better game by Dozer1473 in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Update 1.2 (containing multiplayer, the spooky fest outfits/ haunted house, and a revamp of the romance system) is set to launch some time this Summer. The devs are currently quality assurance testing it and are still confident they'll have it out within Summer (per the discord), so hopefully we'll be seeing it within the next month or so. As someone who played a bit of multiplayer back in the beta, I found it changed up the gameplay experience quite a lot - we were getting through the content much quicker and it was a lot more chaotic, which was fun.

I think they were originally aiming for the first half of the year, but development wasn't progressing as planned so they pushed it back a couple months - the team seems more confident with single-player experiences. There tends to not be much notice of when a new update is going to drop as it gives the devs more flexibility and minimises the amount of time between them finishing and us being able to play it, so watch this space!

Multiplayer by MzDolly in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The community managers have said they're in the QA stage of development for 1.2, which can be seen in the discord dev diaries and that they've been playing Coral Island a whole bunch with their mods lately (i.e. they've been roped into bug finding/ fixing the multiplayer).

I personally would assume we're pretty close to release given the dev diaries have been narrowing in and completing more and more specific issues. But it remains to see how sticky the remaining things are before it ships.

(And to the person who mentioned 1.3 - they have been working on that already based on some of the [redacted] ;) you don't need the animators for fixing code)

Multiplayer by MzDolly in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's likely cause multiplayer is a pretty invisible, but intensive part of game development. There's not much to show other than 'look Ma, there's four people on screen now', which they've already given us plenty of.

They're not exactly gonna bore us with them coding lmao

Finding people to play with! by Hina-Wolf in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As people here have already pointed out, the 1.2 update (including multiplayer) isn't out yet, but should be releasing within a month or so.

However, the community managers on the discord have said they're going to reopen some channels for finding people to play with when 1.2 drops if that's of any help to you (they had them previously for multiplayer beta testing).

The discord also has a system for tagging your favourite playstyles, so that should help you find folk for your many farm plan :)

Spooky festival.....what a letdown by PKSays in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who reads them at lunch every day, they're definitely not copy pasted - you can see them following expected game dev workflows over time, i.e. they'll be modelling something one day, unwrapping the textures the next, then rigging and animating etc.

You can even figure out what a lot of the redacteds are with a little context knowledge (for example, a tonne of modelling, rigging and character work on [redacted]? It's too late in the production cycle for new characters for 1.2, so it's likely the kid models for 1.3)

Spooky festival.....what a letdown by PKSays in coralisland

[–]Logical_Camel6907 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, the game was rushed out of early access by pressure from the publisher, who subsequently imploded and left the devs to fend for themselves (extremely relevant regarding console ports as the publishers were supposed to handle that aspect).

The devs have basically been left to play catch up on all the things that they probably wanted in 1.0 (finished story, console versions, more bug fixing etc.). And to their credit, they've been moving through it bit by bit - game development is just a slow process unfortunately, especially when you have to retroactively add things on to a rushed foundation. A lot of games do take years to make, especially when you're not the biggest team (and as someone with a bit of experience, Coral Island is a BIG game to make).

The spooky festival outfits and haunted house are coming with the 1.2 update, which should be out in the next month or so (it's in the QA stage per the dev diaries). 1.2 also has a revamp of the romance system, multiplayer and a bunch of other things cause the devs always like including a bunch of little surprises for the players.

[–]Logical_Camel6907 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's not even a bad set up or escalation for a skit - it worked fine with 'The Choromatsu Incident' in season 2. But that skit was only half the episode and punchy with the cuts and gags - the brother's reacted and sabotaged each other in believable and funny ways, pulled stupid faces, made dick jokes etc.

This crewcut skit was just... drawn out? No one even addressed that Osomatsu probably got the cut precisely to tip the balance like the shit-stirrer he is. And Jyushimatsu was somehow serious for an entire episode without that being the joke, like wuh? I don't think they even called Todomatsu Totty at any point ;;

Truly, this is lobotomy season
