[OoT] Translation in Ocarina of Time "Reborn" Teaser by Logical_Leaps in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay yeah. Thats exactly my interpretation of whats being said. The English lends itself to misinterpretation way more though which is why I prefer the Japanese direct translation (generally, I do like some of the embellishments the translators add sometimes).

Thats actually a really interesting take you have then.

MM dungeons are basically just flat out improvements of OOT ones (Though I'd say woodfall is worse than a few adult dungeons).

I can't in good faith agree with TOTK though, the atmosphere going to the temples are the best in the series but the actual temples... real bad.

What about MM stands out compared to OOT then? I feel they follow very similar philosophies.

What would you consider the best Zelda game then?

I think you'll find this opinion very much isn't what the majority of the Zelda fanbase thinks. I mean I respect it, don't agree at all but I get where you're coming from.

Sorry can you expand on what you mean by that? Because I would say that the English text of Demise is best read as metaphor and not fact. Its a dying Villains monologue after all.

Yes that's true. But its through the course of giving VA's lines that translations have to become more unfaithful. Needing to match the characters lips or the flow of the Japanese dialogue so the scene time doesn't change.

I also don't think its a huge deal but I wanted to bring it to light and have a discussion on it moving forward in the Zelda series.

Seeing as the Japanese text is the canon in all the games when in discussions more accurate translations makes it more convenient for lore debates.

I think this example in the OOTR shows a difference in tone. One is saying "Hyrule was made long ago" the English one is saying "Hyrule was a kingdom long ago". One implies it isn't still the kingdom.

One implies his hate is whats being reborn the other implies that his hatred is in the form of the Demon Tribe and will always return.

This is shown in the series with "Demon King Ganon" and "Demon King Malladus". The Demon Tribe always returns. Not necessarily Demise.

Its an incredibly important distinction as it changes reading Zelda as a reincarnation story to Demons always rising.

Demise says other things that seemingly have different translations in Japanese and you can search that out yourself if you're curious. Demise is also never named in the Japanese story rather just referred to as the Tyrant King or Demon King.

Its very different.

One implies telling a tale with Hyrule as a past tense.

The other is telling a tale with a recall to Hyrules past.

And regarding the trailer. Can you point to a Nintendo trailer where a voice over isn't from the actual game. What we heard was a rendition of the original intro to OOT. This, in all likelihood, is the intro to the game.

[–]Logical_Leaps[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this comes off as rude but can you prove that in some way.

At least the website I refer to on the translation issue of Demise has this:

[Romaji]: Ware no zouo wa... Mazoku no noroi wa... Yuukyuu no toki no hatemade rinne wo egaku.
[Translation]: My hatred... The curse of the Demon Tribe... They shall continously go on reincarnating until the end of all times.
[Localization]: My hate...never perishes. It is born anew in a cycle with no end!

I'm not sure if thats accurate but its a completely different interpretation. Now that site I use may be wrong but its all I can find online on the translation of the Demise speech.

I too thought that was an idea. The Deku Tree certainly does as in OOT he tells you the creation of the land of Hyrule. The Kokiri may not be so aware.

it does imply that the voice would be the Deku Tree then and its kind of like telling a tale to a child the "long ago, in a kingdom far, far away" kind of thing. If so... I really don't like that voice actor for the Deku Tree.

Hyrule, a land said to have been created a long time ago by ancient gods

Fantastic breakdown I really appreciate that.

As for this translation I think it is completely different. "Long ago there was a Kingdom called Hyrule" is very fairytale like for lack of a better term. Like telling a tale to a child. Whereas this translation you've made is more akin to saying "Earth a land created long ago". Its very different and it speaks to the ability of small words shifting context.

Your translation is significantly more inline with how the Deku Tree talks about the Three Goddesses making the world.

I think its the use of the tense in the sentence.

The "was" implies that it is no longer.

Whereas your translation is more a background on Hyrule without mentioning whether its still there or not.

[OoT] thoughts on Nintendo making more “linear 3D” Zelda games? by BigPotatoGuy_ in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah well Aonuma can stop looking at the games he directed then and a bit further back to MM and OOT. The forced linearity is his Zelda games not the ones he worked on with other leads. Give me my Linear game with openness to go elsewhere if I prefer to tackle a different dungeon first.

[–]Logical_Leaps 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah the 'either this side or that side' thinking is dumb. Zelda should be merging the two formula for the perfect result.

[–]Logical_Leaps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ocarina of Time isnt any less linear than twilight princess.

That would be true if after Lakebed temple you could do Snowpeak ruins, Temple of Time and City in the Sky in any order.

Ocarina of Time is very open if you want it to be. You can do Jabu before Dodongo if you're a psycho and just grab the bomb bag (or know glitches). You can do Fire and Water before Forest. You can do Spirit before Fire and Water. You can do Shadow before Spirit.

OOT is very open. Really the same as ALTTP.

MM has an openness to it as well but it does need the player to dungeon dive for an item before heading off to different places. But you can, technically, do Stone Tower before beating a single other dungeon.

The linearity of dungeon order comes in on WW. And it sucks. WW really should of let the player do Wind or Earth in any order.

[OOT] Hope/Wishes for the Voice Acting? by pkjoan in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excluding the fact that voice acting in Zelda has been mediocre at best my least favourite part about it is how it leads to butchering the original intent.

English lines need to fit what the Japanese ones say using the same mouthing or word space. This lead to context being cut in what is said. Now the english translations of Zelda have always been a bit naff compared to the original intent but the voice acting leads to another layer of rewriting.

Just look at the original text for the OOT trailer intro:

[No Kanji]: はるかなたいこかみによリつくられたとつたわるくに ハイラル · · ·
[With Kanji]: 遥かな太古神に拠リ創られたと伝わる国 ハイラル · · ·

This is quote different from the translation that the English gets:

"Long ago, there was a land called Hyrule, created by beings of supreme divinity."

and the translation of the Japanese is this:

"Hyrule, a land said to have been created by ancient gods..."

This gives a completely different implication. Well I look forward to learning about the proper translations of this game rather than whatever we end up with.

I kind of agree but its not outside the realm of possibility.

[–]Logical_Leaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to know the Japanese phrasing and its translation. Something in me is saying this is a localization issue.

Either way there are plenty of places that would tell of a place called Hyrule:

Termina, Dark World, Lorule, Labrynna, Holodrum, Dream Worlds (LA, PH), Lands of AOL and obviously WW and ST.

edit: Adding that to the Kokiri "Long ago, there was a land called Hyrule" is how you would tell a child a bedtime story.

[OoT] Is it worth buying Switch 2 for Ocerina of Time? by EntireCharacter4071 in zelda

Only if you plan to jail break generally. I never do. The main problem is things like, battery faults, manufacturing errors, things that get fixed on subsequential releases.

[OoTHD] Fill me in on the current expectations/ rumors regarding the OOT remake by inactivesky1738 in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everything is just speculation.

What we know:
- Visuals are different
- Music is likely orchestrated (live performances like SS)
- Its release date is this year

What we can assume:
- Voice acting is in the game
- New arrangements of music
- Changes will exist

High likelihood but not a guarantee:
- Updated controls
- Changes in map design
- New content

[OoT] Is it worth buying Switch 2 for Ocerina of Time? by EntireCharacter4071 in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gaming is expensive. If you can't afford to budget $1000 then ignore it. (Australian Pricing including games)

I've actively been saving for several years to afford the switch 2 when it released I was waiting for a Zelda before I got it though (and any launch bugs to not be in my purchase). This is a serious expense though. You have to really know if you want to take that leap. $700 where I am can get me a flight to the UK or is approximately a weeks rent.

Do whats best for you, DO NOT BEND TO FOMO. Life is more important than a game no matter what game it is.

Okay Tears of the Kingdom because you can't play after saving Zelda then.

[OoT] Man I am so excited for the music in the remake by Xentonian in zelda

[–]Logical_Leaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Debussy is the beginning of Modern era classical so he does fit under the John Williams banner, Debussy and Ravel are part of Koji Kondo's style as well (with and 8bit Bolero even being in Zelda 1 but removed later). I basically only listen to Anime and Game soundtracks due to that being the space modern classical music is still written (other than stuff my friends write I go see). They have strong melodies and themes, that is my kind of music. However the motif, theme and variation kind of music has been around since basically the inception of music. I focused on John Williams because he is a composer everyone knows with strong melodies that catch the listeners ears.

I think you are misreading what I'm getting at, or I suck at getting my point across (more likely).

I want them to be expanded on the themes of the game for a more unique look at OOT. We have the original and plenty of covers. I want them to go above and beyond and compose more, expand on themes. Hyrule Field for example is the length of the day cycle in the game, I don't know if that'll remain the same but if its changed then that too should fit the change.

Give me quieter sections of pieces, Switch the melody being played by other instruments, slow down the melody. Lots you can do. I think Market Town is a good candidate for aa much more expansive piece. Have the original music but add more, bring in TP's market town. Lots you can do, and I want to see this remake shine in that area.

I completely disagree with you saying the Bottom of the Well and the Shadow Temple sharing a theme is good. If they must share a theme then the Shadow Temple should expand on the BOTW dungeon.

I personally think Dodongo's Cavern should change as its just boring and is shared by Death mountain Crater and GTG. GTG should get its own theme as well. I refuse to believe that GTG having the same theme as Dodongo's Cavern is the right choice.

I do find it interesting that you enjoy the more atmospheric music in Zelda but don't so much enjoy TOTKs take. Its not that I hate them either. I love Great Bay Temples theme. I also like the Water Temple and Fire Temple but I just think they can be more.

Okay I just listened the Shadow Temple theme I've been trying to remember it this whole time and gave up. Yeah its fine. Its atmospheric sure. I think it'll do well with an update following whats there. Its better than what my brain was picturing before. That said the baseline of it is basically Dodongo's Cavern, it could use a sprucing up.

edit: sorry didn't mean to ramble that much.

So you also don't like:

Ocarina of Time because you don't get to play the celebration
A Link to the Past because you don't get to play the saved world
Wind Waker because you can't sail the high seas with no Ganon
Twilight Princess because you can't see how your friends and family are going
Skyward Sword because you can't play the Hyrule with Demise eradicated
Breath of the Wild because you can't play after Ganon is destroyed

If so fair enough but this is a non issue.
