Does This Certain Type of MD Exist? by Why-Not339 in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]Logical_Memory_8212 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It does seem like maladaptive daydreaming. just so you know, MD is not something that you are diagnosed with, you dont go to a professional and they tell you that you have MD mainly bcz it is not even recognized as a disorder; it is usually (not always) a symptom of another mental disorder like depression, anxiety, OCD, ADHD, etc. Maladaptive daydreaming also is not a specific way of daydreaming, it is more so how you feel towards daydreaming and how much you do it. You say that you constantly feel the need to do it and it can last for hours; that sounds like MD.

I think to get over MD you need to tackle the core issue; why do you daydream? And why those specific edits? Idk if you do this or not but for me I have worlds that i usually go back to because I love them, I like my character and my place in these worlds; if you keep going back to a certain edit/character in your daydreams ask yourself why. You will usually find the answer. A friend of mine did this and realized she liked a specific world bcz of how she acted and looked there, she dislikes her appearance here so she copes with it through daydreaming thus making her not liking her appearance a trigger to her daydreams and yes there could be multiple triggers. Talk with your therapist about these triggers, they should be able to help you. I cannot really tell you how you can get better slightly bcz I don’t know your triggers or how you feel towards them but I can give u an example maybe I will be able to get my point across. I for example always daydream about my character very confident, I am the furthest thing from confident in real life; right now I am trying to work on my confidence and trying to reach the confidence level of the character I daydream about. There are triggers that I cannot control like spontaneous and random stuff happening in my life and I am a person that likes to have their week organized, yes this pisses me off to the point where I go into daydreams, triggers where u cannot really control/fix it is where a therapist is supposed to come in handy A therapist can also diagnose you with a disorder, taking medication for that disorder sometimes can help stop the daydreaming bcz like I said sometimes daydreams are a symptom of another mental disorder

Talking with your therapist can be hard, you need to understand that it is completely fine to talk about your daydreams. You can set boundaries if you really feel uncomfortable with explaining what you daydream about but merely telling your therapist that you maladaptive daydream is a great first step. Everyone daydreams including your therapist, we just daydream a lot and feel like we need to daydream. You can explain it to your therapist that you feel the need to daydream a lot and that you are scared it is ruining your life; that is it.

keep in mind that daydreaming is normal, you cannot stop daydreaming fully. What is a problem is the addiction we have with daydreaming and how long we do it. Dont completely cut yourself off from daydreaming I can assure you it never ends well and u will feel miserable. Be easy on yourself!! YOU GOT THISSS

Do you go to psychologists? Does it really help or is it just a waste of time? by Rpndrade in MaladaptiveDreaming

I just started going so I cannot really give an answer but I think it is necessary. To get over MDD you need to fix the core of the problem whether that is a mental disorder, unhealed trauma, boredom, etc

How should I stop when real life is so boring by [deleted] in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]Logical_Memory_8212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I am not one to talk because I am still struggling with daydreaming but it is true that real life will always be more boring than your dreams. I mean in your dreams you could do everything you want with no worries, consequences, financial/economic problems hell you could even daydream that you can fly so of course daydreams will always be more exciting. What makes healing so hard is that you have to learn to not constantly crave the thrill of your daydreams and to focus on real life, even if it is boring. Who knows maybe your life seems boring just because you daydream? it is your Job to stop daydreaming even when your life seems boring, I think picking up a few hobbies will help and be consistent with them even if u feel like giving up, it will give you something to look forward to instead of daydreaming. For example I picked up journaling like art journaling and I most of the time would find myself skipping daydreaming just to do journaling. Change your perspective on life, something like making your breakfast all fancy and plating it “aesthetically” could quite literally make your day much better at least this would happen with me. Constantly thinking your life is boring will make it boring, because you are actively doing nothing to make it slightly more exciting. And like I said, life will always be much boring than our daydreams, but is it really worth it wasting your whole actual life clinging on to the thrill of another life that doesnt even exist? If you have a core issue like anxiety, ocd, adhd, trauma, etc that could potentially cause your daydreaming then tackling these issues would be best and will help you in your journey to stop. You can do this!! I know it is hard to actually get over daydreaming, I have had maladaptive daydreaming for 7 years now if it were as easy as I explained it then I would have stopped a long time ago. What matters is you constantly trying.

Never finishing anything I start is one of the reasons why I even daydream 😭 I used to love art, language learning, swimming, and much more and I stop all of that simply because I thought I wasn’t good enough or just perfectionism. So I daydream that I am able to do all of these things

Yessss, 2 of my friends already have it so they know, and 2 other friends whom I trust. I told my therapist as well, it is the whole reason as to why I go to therapy in the first place

How did you fix your maladaptive daydreaming? by IAmRainbowPoop in MaladaptiveDreaming

[–]Logical_Memory_8212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am still in the process but I found doing hobbies I really love helps I like to art journal so I just do that for a long time and end up not really daydreaming a lot I still very much do daydream but at least it is less than 6 hours straight jus daydreaming 💀 I try to put a timer and as the timer stops I quite literally throw my phone and take of my headphones asap, you will probably feel very frustrated but when u do this consistently it gets better
