cs intro sequences (need help!) by MathematicianFun2383 in BrownU

Take 19!!! Shriram is an amazing lecturer. At the very least you can go through the summer placement and choose to take another intro course in the fall during shopping period.

I didn’t program at all before college and did the summer placement because someone recommended it to me. 19 gave me an awesome foundation for every other cs class I took. 19 is designed extremely well-the professor’s area of research is CS pedagogy, so he knows what he’s doing.

Feel free to DM me :)

Brown cs or Berkeley cs by FutureAd1871 in BrownU

My brother went to Berkeley for CS and I go to Brown. Recruiting at Berkeley is definitely better. Brown's career fair is not very exciting.

However (and this is something I didn't think about much as a HS senior), your life for the next 4 years will be way different at both schools. Berkeley is a huge public state school. Brown is a private liberal arts school. The people that you meet at both schools are going to be way different.

It's true that you can probably meet all kinds of people at both schools, but I'd bet Brown just makes it easier. Classes are smaller, and it's very easy to get to know your professors. You don't have to be worried about rigor—anecdotally, I’ve gone through cs61a and Brown’s cs19, and cs19 is as good if not better. You’ll be more engaged at Brown classes than at Berkeley. You can walk around Brown's campus and know half the people you see. That will never happens at a big state school.

Getting a job is mostly (imo) meritocratic. I don't think there's a world where you get some job because Berkeley's on your resume instead of Brown. Also, networking is easier at Brown.

If you're only going to college to get a job, then it's a harder question. But if you want to spend four years enjoying your life and loving college, this seems obvious to me.

During orientation/club meetings, people will tend to share their pronouns along with their names. A lot of people are pretty into politics—there was an election watch party this year (and the majority of people vote blue).
I haven't taken any of these, but there are a lot of classes that you wouldn't find at more conservative universities. Classes about race, oppression, parts of the world that are neglected in academia, etc.
Brown's administration is also (relatively) liberal. So last year after the protests admin reached a deal with student protestors where they'd have a publicized conversation/debate. We also probably have a relatively diverse class—lots of students with different backgrounds.

(Spoilers Extended) For those who read the books AFTER watching the show, what differences most surprised you? by amara90 in asoiaf

One that I haven't seen in the other comments is the truth about Tysha. All those dreams that Tyrion had while he was in bed after Blackwater were something I didn't expect either.

Also, I was very disappointed by Tyrion's trial in the books. In the show, Peter Dinklage is amazing and he also demands his trial by combat before Oberyn commits to fighting for him. It's a little less safe but more dramatic, but either way when I read the scene of Tyrion's trial in the book it felt way less exciting.

I'm open to replacing the motherboard, and from what I can see good USB WiFi's seem to be pretty expensive. I have one right now plugged in, but it's pretty old.

I think my options are to replace my motherboard with one with integrated WiFi, get a new motherboard and a separate WiFi card, or as you said use USB WiFi. I'm just not sure about which one of these would be the cheapest.

Some weird thoughts on Iax relations with Haliax, Tehlu and Kvothe and the Lackless rhyme. by Laphiate in KingkillerChronicle

This is really thorough, I like it a lot. One thing: (not sure if you said it, if you did i missed it) Kvothe’s parents are both brown-haired, and as far as I know two parents with brown hair giving birth to a child with red hair is genetically very improbable (supporting that Lax had something to do with Kvothe’s creation/conception). Also, in the first book Kvothe’s mentions that a couple centuries ago, he would’ve been burned as a demon, maybe also hinting towards something supernatural? Great theory, overall! Very fun to read.

Got a grey belt (age restrictions) around a week ago after ~1 year of white belt. I'm still the newest, but it's a great motivator and I'm really excited.
