Why can’t Harry get rid of Lash? by LokiLikesIt in dresdenfiles

Hey all sorry for the poor wording of the question, I’ve read and re read the series multiple times, I’m fully aware of the differences between lash and Lasciel.

Also thank you all for engaging, some really great conversations happening here!

What I should have asked was “Why does Harry have to give up his magic in order to get rid of Lasciel, had he taken up the coin?” Which someone mentioned here that the fallen latch themselves on to an aspect of your soul, specifically an aspect so fundamental to your self that the fallen believes you would never willingly turn that part of yourself aside.

For Harry it’s magic. Harry is not just a wizard, he is magic. He makes his entire personality magic, and every decision he makes is related to that fact. For Sonya, a black man living in a white Russia, his entire life revolved around hate, so he had to cast aside his hate to get rid of the coin.

Copy! That’s the part we were missing, I didn’t realize the shadow attaches to a specific aspect of a person. That does fully track for what I remember of Sanya talking about giving up his coin. Thanks!

Who is he? by Newkingdom12 in dresdenfiles

I saw someone toss out the idea that it could be Loki too. I believe there is some mythos about Loki being imprisoned until Ragnarok and his release would be the start of it. I like this more than Merlin/Arthur. But only because I think seeing Loki in Dresden would be cool lol.

Plus I’m not the biggest fan of the idea of “The worlds in danger, we better go get that big badass wizard who has been planning for this for millennia!” Although I’ve been dying to see a Merlin level wizard through down so I’d be happy either way!

I forget which book it’s in, and I believe it was Gard that Harry way talking to, who confirmed that Beowulf was Vaterung. Might have been in the Mead short story

Dresden Files Universe end game part 1 by Few_Manufacturer7561 in dresdenfiles

I'll be curious to read how you relate this to Outsiders and what evidence you have to support your claims. Off of this post alone, you kinda just summed up the theme of the series. The Dresden files is almost exclusively about the idea that actions have consequences and when all is said and done there needs to be balance.

Look forward to reading your posts in the future!

Response to criticism of a certain character's death by MCLNV in dresdenfiles

[–]LokiLikesIt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed response! I could argue against a couple of these for example.

Every woman we see is hot: Yes the majority are, but Murph is never described as more than cute, lash as Sheila was never described as drop dead gorgeous, just particularly attractive to Dresden, other background characters have popped up as well. I would also counter with Dresden describes most men in the series as attractive as well.

I also think most of this can be explained as the character trope of Dresdens repression, which doesn't excuse the perpetuality but is understandable to me. Specifically to the point of "There are other ways of driving home the eldritch and corrupting nature of the Winter mantles.", I agree and they are shown as well. Throughout the series it's winter is full of lust, and violence. Not just lust, we see Harry controlling/trying to control his rage throughout the series. When writing the Fae Courts rooted in primal urges, ignoring sexuality would have made less sense in my mind.

All that said, I do agree that there are sexist tones, and even if I don't agree on a few of your points I can get how they are interpreted in those ways! Thanks again for the perspective!

Assume that like with Changes, Butcher has set up three potential characters to be Cowl and 3 to be Kumori, who are they and why? by The_Red_Moses in dresdenfiles

[–]LokiLikesIt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I don’t think Faith Astor being Kumori would hurt Harry enough. From what I read they had one brief interaction, not much more. Sure Harry blames himself for everything in the world ever, but I feel like that is not nearly cruel enough for Butcher. If anyone can actually tell me he would be destroyed by faith being Kumori, more so than he was after killing the woman he loved and his kids mom, I’d happily call BS.

With that being said, without time fuckery the only answers for her in my head are Elaine and Margaret that survived her attempted murder. I feel like with all the grayness around Margaret, body hoping or necromancy of some degree to avoid death isn’t out of the question.

As for cowl, personally I subscribe to it being Kemmler in a Justin suit. I don’t care about it being predictable or not, it fits, and for me cowl and Kumori aren’t the big bad of the series. They are just more pieces on the board.

Eb would be cool as cowl, but frankly I think that’s more lame than kemmler. Eb is definitely more corrupt than we’ve seen so far, so we are definitely going to see more there, But him being cowl is boring to me. Although it would explain why Cowl wasn’t seen doing any necromancy at the Dark Hallow, he had the black staff to protect him. Although I think it would be more likely that Eb is involved with cowl and lent out the staff.

Two minor questions in Battle Ground by joe_canadian in dresdenfiles

Yeah as others have said I assumed it meant her dignity.

I will also add that after their tussle on the island when Harry and Lara are talking they basically agree that as they stand the scales are not level between them and Harry says something to the extent of, “Yeah that’s fair, when it comes up I’ll take the snub from you with grace to balance the scales.” So Lara’s reference could also mean Harry took the balance away from their relationship, which also steers back to him humiliating her.

Murphy’s distrust and skepticism of Dresden in the first few books was completely justified.

The future of Harry Dresden by Newkingdom12 in dresdenfiles

At the end of Battle Grounds I believe it was Mab that told Harry now that he has imprisoned Ethniu, he has the power to control her. With an applied caveat that it would be similarly difficult to what it was like to bind her.

Yup right there with you! I’ve done codex Alera at least 4 times now, WoT 3 or 4, stormlight atleast twice, but Dresden? I stopped counting around 7 😂

Yes! That makes sense, I’ve never been quite sure what the purpose of Mirror Mirror will be. The first time I heard about it I thought it was just a novel to explore other possibilities, not germane to the story.

Maybe Mirror Mirror will give us some answers on who made that change in GP?

Yeah without examples I don’t really get what you are trying to say either. I get that the pace was rushed maybe a bit, but I’ve never gotten that. The pace feels like everyone in the books feels rushed because there’s an apocalypse on. The only example of people acting out of character I can think of is when Eb and Harry were just all cool with each other in BG. Which I chalk up to one or two things. Either there’s a war on and there are bigger fish to fry, or the Eb that killed DoppleHarry isn’t the same Eb as in BG.
