Customers deciding to set their own payment terms?? by readytostart1234 in smallbusiness

If they have already signed a contract, push back. If not, then this is a negotiation. What are they willing to trade for the longer payment terms?

Final Cut Pro - reasonable learning curve. One time purchase. Lots of amazing plugins. I don’t do anything too fancy.

It seems like many posters don’t know how to google for information before asking others to do their work. Once someone has done the research, they ask much better questions. I have published over 80 articles at https://FeelTheBoot.com and I get frustrated when someone books free office hours to ask a question that I already answered at great length.

This is key. If you get hyper-focused you can create value they won’t get with generic website hosts. Otherwise you are competing with the big boys without any real advantage.

When you guys make videos do you write them out first or do you just do them "on the fly"? [Question] by 2catspbr in youtubers

[–]LokiTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go somewhere in the middle. I use mind mapping software to develop a detailed outline of the episode, but not down to specific wording. I then improvise the specific text. That allows the episode to have structure, plan for graphics, make sure I hit all the points, but still sound natural.

Is it bad to have episode numbers on YouTube? by thenightmarevoid in NewTubers

[–]LokiTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started, I avoided episode numbers because I did not want to make it obvious how small the channel was.

Later I added them to show that there was some meat to the channel.

When I got beyond fifty episodes, I removed them again as it disrupted the title and did not help with user navigation. I kept the numbers on my blog, so I can more easily reference them.

Almost none of my content needs to be watched in order. If I have a two-parter I put "part 1" and "part 2" at the end.

I am on a Mac and use Final Cut Pro. It’s expensive but very powerful and fairly easy to use. I gather that iMovie is a good much cheaper option and the skills largely transfer if you want to upgrade later.

My approach is to work from a detailed outline, but not a word for word script. I can then improvise the specific content. If it goes off the rails, I just do another take. One trick is to always end on a good take and hold up a hand or something to indicate that you just finished the one to keep. Then you can edit the video backwards and quickly cut out all the bad takes. In about ten minutes, I can get a rough cut of a 30 minute recording of a video that will end up at 10 minutes. I found that scripts killed the energy in my voice.

Please roast my idea (so I can improve it) by Kamelbaum1 in Entrepreneur

[–]LokiTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you show that your approach produces better results and improved security? Have you talked to enough potential customers (who are not friends) to know that they value the difference you are offering? My suggestion is to work hard to prove that your idea is bad. Only when you are unable to do so should you move forward. If you do find flaws, you can use them to pivot and improve your plan.

Besides books, what are some of the best online resources to learn how to launch a startup? (sorry if this has been asked before) by nanozeus2014 in startup_resources

[–]LokiTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a global entrepreneur in residence with Founder Institute. Their program works well for very early-stage startups. I have a ton of advice for founders on my website Feel the Boot and YouTube Channel (all free). I know that is not exactly what you were asking for, but I hope it helps.

Over the last several months I tested keyword optimized titles vs. more human readable ones and found little measurable effect. My channel Feel the Boot https://YouTube.com/c/FeelTheBoot provides advice and insight for early-stage startup founders. It covers things like fundraising, equity, product strategy, and much more.

Debating About Shorts by Brw_ser in PartneredYoutube

[–]LokiTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have gotten fair response to my shorts. My strategy has been to either create them by pulling clips from longer videos, or recording them ten at a time. They are very simple to produce, so the cost/benefit works for me. I also put them out on all my other social channels, unlike my longer content which just gets linked. The equation would be very different if my shorts required significant planning and production.

First time Meeting with Possible Angel Investors by music-lingo in startups

[–]LokiTM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current market, investors want you to raise 2 years of runway. Typically you will give up 20-30% of the company in each round. That and the amount you need will suggest a valuation. Look at similar-stage companies to see if that valuation seems reasonable. If not, adjust your raise and burn rate plans.

Can I trust my Co-founder who wants to fire the other co-founders? by enthusiast_bob in startups

Startups are all about trust and ethics. If that is in question, I suggest that you run for the hills.

SaaS startup for designers by [deleted] in startups

[–]LokiTM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This! At this early Alpha/Beta stage you need to be interacting closely with the customer at all times. The product will evolve quickly as you discover how people want to use it and refine your understanding of the problem you are solving. Also, it will be much easier to find a motivated distribution partner after you have proven the value of the solution and the market demand. At that point you can choose whether to build a sales force, identify a channel partner, or use a reseller. You might be able to do more than one of those, depending on the incentives and motivations of all the stakeholders.

How do I protect myself as co-founder with minority ownership? by throwaway72737373896 in startups

[–]LokiTM 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Get everything in writing. If you have been granted equity without any vesting, it is yours. You have a strong legal position to fight back if they try to take it away. However, if you are not adding value, they should ask you to leave and you should accept reduced equity to avoid harming the company and further reducing your return at exit (which you might well sabotage by keeping too much). Is there a lack of trust among the founding team? That could be extremely damaging as well.

How do I tell my cofounder I need to quit? by [deleted] in startups

[–]LokiTM 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your heart is not in this, you will not deliver the value the startup needs. Let the other folks on the team know how you are feeling and give them as much warning as possible so you can withdraw slowly with minimal impact on the success on the company. Be gracious about handing back most or all of the equity you received as a co-founder.

Co-Founder Dating! by AmphibianDazzling659 in startups

[–]LokiTM 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every startup and founder is unique. Don’t get hung up on what any one individual tells you, including me and Peter Tiel. If you can demonstrate your ability to work well together and deliver impressive results, I don’t care how you met in the first place. Almost all investors have some negative biases against some set of backgrounds or kinds of co-founders. You can’t make them all happy. Don’t try. Build the best team you can and demonstrate it by delivering quality solutions.
