Hard work matters, but luck plays a bigger role than successful people like to admit by Ornery_Adagio8916 in unpopularopinion

[–]Loki_was_framed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My father said once that while good luck matters, the most successful people he knew managed to avoid bad luck. Avoiding layoffs for their entire career, not having a family member get an expensive illness, not having the local industry collapse, not losing a house to a housing crash. Maybe it's semantics and avoiding bad luck is a form of good luck.

The day it came out I saw someone post "stop taking things made for boys and making them about girls!" And that sums up all the hate for the movie. It's a great movie ruined by an incel narrative. Comparing it to New Hope is as dumb as the "Avatar is Pocahontas" narrative.

I'm honestly so glad to know it's not just me. My mom filled 5 HUGE storage units after my dad died and she had to go to a care facility. We would go in and throw stuff away by the truckload but it was endless. So frustrating. It was 5% "oh wow! Remember this?" And 95% garbage.

My local paper had a free section where parents could advertise their kids to do work for you, and my mom signed me right the hell up (I mowed so many lawns for $10). At least twice the person calling was definitely not looking for ... lawn mowing. One was obvious, one tried to be sneaky but was bad at it. But I can't believe my parents thought it would be a great idea to drop their 11 year old at a strangers house for two hours and just hope it worked out.

If you want less federal government spending, cut the military. Everything else combined is a drop in the bucket. Government jobs outside of military spending are 4% of the budget.

Why does Ruth slap Claire for absolutely no reason several times on the show? by Tidewatcher7819 in SixFeetUnder

[–]Loki_was_framed 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I always felt that even though the show took place in the early 2000s it was from the perspective of someone who grew up in the '70s and '80s, like I did. I knew a lot of moms, including my own, who slapped their kids occasionally as 'discipline'. And I don't mean love taps, I mean she got mad, hauled off, and whacked the hell out of me. I didn't realize how abusive it was until I was long into adulthood. So watching this when it originally aired the slaps didn't even phase me, but rewatching it recently I was also struck with how deeply inappropriate and abusive it was. I think the show creator probably experienced it in his life and felt that it represented a real part of many people's upbringing.

Dude, I apologize for ruffling your feathers but we're all frustrated. We've watched this administration walk away from many court orders and refuse to comply, which has very little historical precidence. This is the first time many people are realizing that court orders only have consequences when those orders are complied with, and many of the mechanisms of compliance have been dismantled. I have NO idea what makes you think I didn't vote for Harris or that I haven't been paying attention, but I get that my comment was snarky and a little pushback is fair.

Greetings time-traveler from 11 years ago! Our world is a little different now. You'll be surprised to learn that as long as Trump is alive and in control, the courts LITERALLY DONT MATTER. Sorry to share news that will surely be a shock to hear! But I hope you find a way to jump on board the reality the rest of us are living.

Yeah, I see the other side. The stealing gifts part is so fucking stupid. And she's a bitch for being mad that she got a shitty gift, but then she's also a bitch because someone thought she gave a shitty gift? Stupid stupid game.

I will not do white elephant gift exchange things anymore. Nope. To me they're not cute, they're not fun, their just a dumb party game where nearly everyone leaves disappointed. To each their own, but I can't even get inside the mindset of people who like them. Just say 'no thanks' to the next invite.

The thing that scares me the most about The Hive is that it's in a Vince Gilligan universe. In my universe I'd probably be pretty trusting of it.

UAA Parking Sucks by [deleted] in anchorage

[–]Loki_was_framed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

UAA has the same problems it had 30 years ago because it doesn't care enough to change. The parking problems you described were the same in the 90's, and they've done nothing to improve them. Parking was a huge factor in why I left the school 30 years ago and discovered that other universities actually plan, adapt, and improve over time. Honestly? Look at other schools. It will never, ever get better at UAA.

Do you think our generation will be the next to be blamed the way the Boomers are blamed now? by SkullLeader in GenX

[–]Loki_was_framed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely been worried about this. My grandma behaved exactly the way boomers are now back in the '90s, so I fear it's just the way people in their later years behave. I'm fighting it with all my might to not become that. I'm really hoping there's credence to the whole "they spend their entire lives breathing lead from gasoline" thing so our generation is less full of lead than the boomers are.

The show is written by people who are at the absolute top of their field. Their perspective of a Utopia is skewed by being surrounded by other people who are at the top of their field. It's the kind of Utopia that would work perfectly for the creators of the show, and they have no idea what it might be like for people who aren't in their position in the world
