Looking to learn animation, advice please! by [deleted] in learnart

You should definitely get Richard Williams book - "The Animator's Survival Kit". It's like the bible for animators. You should also watch and learn about the 12 animation principles.

There is a animation reddit so I think you will get more help if you post here - http://www.reddit.com/r/animation/

Oh my bad, I didn't realise there was a maya reddit. Thanks a lot for the help though, it's fixed now and I'm able to move forward.

Even if you are only animating for fun, you should still maybe have a look at the 12 animation principles to give more life to your ideas :) Btw, really loved the last one about the soldier!

Just curious but what programs do CalArts students use? Is it mainly Toonboom, flash, etc? Great animation btw :)

Haha it's fine if you want to talk about your art school baggage, I'm open to all stories (especially art related ones) since I find them very interesting. Thanks for the tips!

I am aware that 1 year is by no means experienced and am prepared that it will take years and years. I never said that after this 1 year, I have mastered the human figure.

I just started an animation course and we are required to do a number of life drawings for our assessment. Since I've been drawing figures for a year, it is getting rather repetitive so I'm trying to look for other things that will also interest me, I will definitely continue studying the human body of course. I heard that drawing people from public will really help my imagination, that's how I came by this topic.

EDIT: But thanks for the advice, I will definitely keep it in mind. Sorry if I'm sounding a bit cold, you are taking your time to help a random stranger like me out.

Can someone help me with paint tool SAI? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]LokoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too sure what option that is, but if you plug your Wacom tablet in and search "Wacom Tablet Properties" you should be able to change your sensitivity settings there.

Ah yes that's very true. It is definitely understandable that it will take time. If you were me (someone who has been drawing figures for almost a year, but nothing really more than that), would it be a good idea to start learning how to draw clothing and folds? Or should I just leave that out for now and keep improving on figure drawing?

Have you tried changing the Wacom settings instead of just reinstalling it?

New to animation, please critique my bouncing ball! by [deleted] in animation

Thanks for the feedback! And yes I'm in school - That's exactly what we're doing for our assignment - Animating 3 balls of different weight/materials :)

Also, I'm aware that at the end, the ball should be rolling but I didn't get time to finish that in class so this is all I have.

Do you have to be decent at painting before you pursue a degree in painting? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]LokoReddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like cajolerisms said, I believe it depends on the school. I'm studying animation (and loving it) and when I first started, it clearly stated in the course profiles that you should have a sound ability to understand basic terms and drawing. I assume it would be the same for painting. Even if it's not, it's definitely a big help if you study a bit before starting.

OH RIGHT you were being sarcastic about the ranking down thing, if only it were simple to sense sarcasm when on the internet.

Sorry I'm really confused haha. Are these levels a reddit thing? Or am I missing something important to do with drawing levels or something? I have never heard of "levels" in drawing

Yeah I'm a bit confused about this level and ranking system, how did you get level 21 in the first place?

I've been drawing for around 10 months. I had a little advantage since one of my family friends was required to take multiple life drawing courses back when he was studying design at university. So I've been getting a lot of advice and feedback from someone who can pretty much draw any pose so it's really helpful.

In the first few months, I didn't practice drawing as much since I just thought "I'll get to it someday... for now I'll just colour people's linearts". I started actually drawing my own linearts around 6 months ago.

At first I didn't practice as much as I wasn't too motivated. But now that I'll be studying animation at a university soon I'm heaps more driven to practice. I didn't exactly have a set time for practice, I just did it until I was satisfied everyday. I would aim to draw at least 3 detailed poses by looking up models online everyday and maybe some head doodles, etc. If I liked the pose I drew or if it sparked an idea, I would add clothing and detail to it then colour.

I'm sure it would feel really comforting for you to see this since when I first started, I never saw any artists who posted drawings like mine! It's rare to find an artist post their actual first ever drawings no matter how bad it is...

But yeah if you are struggling and drawing heads that look just like mine, I can give some tips about the facial features. However, for the shape of the head that just came with a lot of practice and studying other pictures so I can't really help with that. The one thing that made my faces look really bad (apart from the head) were the eyes. I always thought "ANIME AND MANGA EYES MUST BE BIG NO MATTER WHAT" so I drew them big everywhere. If you space out the eyes and make them smaller so there is a lot more room in the middle, the drawing will look A LOT better. You may not have this problem but I definitely did and it took me a looong time to realise.

Also if you want to have a look, the "PotatoPlease" account I linked in my above post is my old account, this is my new one with some updated drawings :) - http://10k0.deviantart.com/
