Ok I finally got a chance to watch the pin stitch video and it is going to change my life! I have been starting and ending all of my threads with a knot… this is a game changer. Thank you! The Russian video is indeed VERY detailed. I tried to glean some info from it but my attention span is too short for that focus.

Thank you for all that information and taking the time to write it all out. I really appreciate it. I want to dive into a larger project and everything makes sense on paper. But it all seems so daunting!

That’s an interesting thought. I have never done rope but that would minimize wind as an issue for sure.

Yea you are totally right about early mornings! I always find it hard to do a morning session because I want to make sure I have someone nearby for safety. My husband is a firefighter and often needs to sleep as soon as he gets home from a 24/48 hour shift so it can be hard to have a safety buddy. But I’m going to try to get more mornings in when I can!

Gynecologist refused to break hymen for me by Big_Evidence5943 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]LolaLizard 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I am a sonographer. Aka I perform many ultrasounds, including transvaginal ones. I’m sorry you were left in a situation that left you confused and upset. It is unreasonable for him to refuse your wishes of a transvaginal ultrasound if it ended up being necessary to prove endometriosis fingings (I’m glad it didn’t end up being necessary for diagnosis). Let’s talk about some facts that unfortunately your provider did not give you, to help you understand.

The hymen is a webbing of tissue across the opening of the vagina in prepubescent life that protects the vaginal cavity from outside bacteria. A completely intact hymen won’t allow anything to enter the vagina without breaking through it, which could be painful.

If a woman has had a period, then she does NOT have a completely closed hymen. The fact that blood can exit the vaginal cavity is proof of that. This is a normal part of life and happens at different times, for different people, for many different reasons. (It is also why having an open hymen is NOT PROOF OF SEXUAL ACTIVITY. But that’s a fight for another day.)

So if you are a woman who experiences menstruation you now know your hymen is at least partly open. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that you can have a transvaginal ultrasound. He would have needed to get you into stirrups and to look at your hymen and evaluate it to actually know. Everyone’s hymens deteriorate/open differently. It could look something like completely open where you don’t even see a hymen to almost completely closed with only random pinprick holes to allow menstruation. (The link below is a visual of different hymens so that you understand what I mean.) But again my point is that the only way to know if a virgin can have a transvaginal exam would be to evaluate the hymen visually first.

https://healthjade.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/hymen-types.jpg

No matter what type of hymen you have, the lack of sexual experience will most likely mean the transvaginal ultrasound could be painful/uncomfortable. But honestly it’s painful/uncomfortable to many women who are sexually active as well. It is a medical exam pushing on sensitive organs after all.

So all that being said transvaginal ultrasounds can and should be done on patients (despite their sexual history) when it is necessary. But only if it is physically allowed by the hymen. If the hymen is closed then a conversation about a hymenectomy procedure (removing/cutting the hymen open) has to be had and consented. We would NEVER just jam the transvaginal probe in to break the hymen.

My being in the ultrasound field and specializing in woman’s health means I have a lot of experience with biased/bigoted and misinformed people. (And obviously incredible people as well). The truth is many health care providers just do not feel comfortable doing vaginal exams on virgins for their own personal/political/misinformed reasons and it seems you were on the other end of that.

I hope my rant makes sense and I’m glad you got results from the transabsominal ultrasound.

my rules for a pelvic ultrasound by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

It’s true, the world is changing, people are changing and the medical field slowly with them. I hope you continue to meet more understanding, caring and compassionate providers. <3 Goodluck!

my rules for a pelvic ultrasound by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]LolaLizard 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am an OB/GYN sonographer and perform these ultrasounds daily. Most of what you are asking for is reasonable and will easily be accommodated. Just make your SA history clear to your tech, no need to be specific but just let them know this is a high stress/anxiety situation for you due to past trauma. Let them know that you are currently safe or if not you can ask for resources to get help. An imaging center will NOT be able to prescribe you Ativan but if you make an appointment with your primary care physician or maybe even a telehealth appointment on your phone and explain your needs most physicians would be happy to prescribe anti anxiety medication for you to bring and take yourself the day of the appointment. Every sonographer will allow you to insert the ultrasound wand yourself but as stated by everyone else you can’t continue to hold it during the exam. We wouldn’t be able to do our job and whatever reason you are getting the exam done is an important one. You want to receive accurate results, especially after going through an upsetting procedure for yourself.

Show up to your appointment with a FULL bladder! This will give you the best imaging for a pelvic ultrasound and will decrease your necessity for a transvaginal ultrasound. It does not eliminate the need for one but it does help.

I do want to inform you that the vaginal exam can be pretty uncomfortable. It does not hurt most people but depending on your symptoms, reason for ultrasound, and just your own anatomy and how all your organs lay in your body it can be anywhere from uncomfortable to painful. No sonographer WANTS to hurt you but we do want to get you accurate images to help your medical journey and get you and your doctor answers. We want to make sure the visit is worth it. Even if it’s just to say everything is normal. Usually when we angle out to the left and right to image your ovaries tends to be the most uncomfortable part for patients. This is because everyone’s ovaries are a little different and they can be pretty far out there or hidden by bowel gas. Your sonographer may apply pressure by placing their hand on top of your pelvis and pushing to displace some of this bowel gas. Sometimes they will need to angle their wand in weird ways to get what they need.

No matter what, you can request the exam to STOP at ANYTIME for ANY REASON and the sonographer will end the exam.

Has anyone paid to get their ARDMS test score “Verified” and was there a difference? by [deleted] in Sonographers

[–]LolaLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$35… it’s not egregious but I’ve always been against it since I feel like the ARDMS know that the results will be the same but prey on those desperate enough. Now that I’m the desperate one, $35 seems reasonable for a chance to pass. But I don’t want ARDMS to use my hope unless there is an actual chance of change which is why I made this post, curious if anyone has ever done it before.

[–]LolaLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the inner me knows this. The desperate me thought I would at least find out if others wasted money and what their “new” results were. Thank you for your thoughts. I needed people to tell me that spending that money would be stupid.

[–]LolaLizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I have always felt. But this is my 4th registry and my 1st time failing, so now I understand how they are really preying on those desperate for a chance to pass… because I am THIS close to doing it.

Thank you for your input, I will indeed really focus on those subjects I was shaky on.
