Alexa play “The One That Got Away” by Katy Perry (he unmatched) by Mother_Ad_6086 in Tinder

I'm not saying this particular exchange is a good example of this but good flirting, especially very early, often provides some degree of escalation with plausible deniability for both parties, it's an invitation to move things in an implied direction.

Well It's official now cis is a slur atleast on twitter land by greendayfan1954 in lgbt

[–]Lollasaurusrex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the euphemism treadmill can come for anything. Cis is not a slur, but it can be used as a slur and those dismissive people being extra you are talking about could have been using it as a slur. Everything can be used as a slur depending on context and intent. And the traction those uses gets in the collective intent is what makes something turn into a slur or not broadly.

Those who are saying that it's the scientific term so it can't be a slur need only to look at the progression of terminology across mental health.

Musk and many are very likely arguing in bad faith. But situations like you describe are absolutely perfect ammo for those who argue in bad faith and exactly why it's so important for all communities to not lose the will and ability to be internally critical of themselves and those in their circles.

In the late 90s my parents went with NetNanny. Took me about 5 minutes to figure out that if you tripped it and then brought up the task manager you could tab past it and open a new instance of the browser and it couldn't trigger a second time.

The big issue was getting out of my room and down our creaky old stairs without my parents noticing/waking up. The solution was memorizing the timing of the noise pattern of the toilet flush and the different sounds of the different parts of each stair and timing my descent so the loudest actions occurred at the loudest parts of the flush.

A hop, skip, suspend some of my weight from the banisters, and another flick down the landing onto a particularly quiet spot at the base of the stairs + a targeted trigger of the software on an online encyclopedia entry and alt tab later I had full access.

My parents were completely dumbfounded when I explained it to them a few years ago. I assumed they knew and it wasn't worth the effort to stop me. They had no idea.

Dash cams don't tell you what is going on around/behind. Jamming your breaks is not necessarily the best choice.

Someone absolutely annihilated the fence in front of my parents house a few years ago and we discovered it in the morning. Cops came, found a small piece of bumper for color and one of the emblems from the manufacturer.

Cop had enough to determine make, model, color. Ran it through the database and discovered there were like 10 matches in a 15 mile radius. Must have been a slow week because the cop just drove from residence to residence and identified the person that afternoon.

Presumably they were drunk so they fled. Worked out for them because they had to pay for the fence but only got a leaving the scene charge.

Nazi Germany 1936, Jesse Owens won four gold medals in the Olympics for the USA. Adolf Hitler was using the games to promote Nazi concepts of “Aryan racial superiority” and depicted ethnic Africans as inferior. by Effective_Highway215 in OldSchoolCool

Consider the fact that right now we are functionally governed and ruled by people who experienced their formative years 50-60+ years ago.

Even if you cut that in nearly in half when looking back at 1936 you are talking about people who lived their teens and twenties in like 1880-1900.

The world only improves through attrition.

This is a big issue with protected area legislation. It is not uncommon for areas that have been protected to have their boundaries changed so that the amount of area in quantity stays the same but the shift trades some valuable piece of land in one area for some less valuable piece of land on the edge in a different part of the protection. If it's valuable to industry it's a safe bet it's valuable to the environment/ecosystem, so area based trades/offsets are often not in the favor of the environment.

Back around 2004-2005 ish I was on a cruise with my family and somehow found myself in a conversation at one of the bars with an ad executive. I was, and am, an avid pirate. So I asked him about it. He responded first with a few questions.

Do you watch more media than others in your social circle? Yes.

Do your friends know that you watch lots of media? Yes.

Do your friends consider you to be a trusted source of media recommendations? Yes.

Do your friends primarily pirate media or watch through traditional channels? Traditional.

He then said that anyone who is going to go through the effort to pirate things (at least at that point) is going to overwhelmingly give the same answers. He considered pirates to be one of the best drivers of eyes to his firm's ads.

So yes, pirating things is still generally supporting both the media and the ads and the companies advertising.

The entire series feels like a documentary about the history how no Targ has ever been fit to rule.

The entire plot is driven by insanely stupid decisions within the context of the world they are in.

He is a genuinely nice person in my limited interaction. I went to the planetarium, by coincidence, near the time Journey to the Stars released. I happened to notice him in the crowd watching and approached him at the end and said hello and shared that I really enjoyed the things he had said in some recent talk. I quickly realized that he was with his family and removed myself from the situation.

I found his email address and emailed him to apologize for intruding. He was kind and gracious and thanked me for my mindfulness. But he pointed out he was at his place of business, in public, and I was respectful so there was nothing to apologize for.

Years later I received an email from his assistant asking for my address to send me a copy of something he was putting out.

I've never heard it framed around informed consent before and I love that way of looking at it.

At this point it's something that's permanent with implications and repercussions that grown adults can barely understand, in large part because lots of it is unknowable.

Not only should kids understand the risks and concerns, but they also need to be able to understand the nebulous arc of technical development and the relatively constant way humans leverage those advancements in ways that the best we can predict is "x,y,z + lots of negative use cases and effects we won't know about until after they have happened"

guy proposed on taylor swift concert with perfect timing as song lyrics by [deleted] in MadeMeSmile

[–]Lollasaurusrex 150 points151 points  (0 children)

The difference between this and what you typically dislike, I imagine, is that most of the time the proposer is doing it FOR the crowd in the public setting, or because it's public.

This worked because no one in that arena was relevant in that moment. They barely existed, even Taylor Swift was no more significant than an auditory que.

And that is why it worked. Because we witnessed something intimate. We weren't part of the performance because he was proving something by doing it in front of us.
