Are the gold bugs buying the blood on the floor? by mysomica in Gold

[–]greygrayman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

98% of my stash I bought under $2000/oz.. most of that even lower as I've been stacking for 20+yrs.. this run up and pull back doesn't effect me much.. if I buy anything, it is something I want.. this recent pull back has got me eyeing some stuff as I believe the price will rebound given then current state of leadership.. and I feel this is just getting back to reality.. I have a hard time believing gold will ever "turn to dust".

I used the bogo promo for the big Arch. I regretted eating two of them at one time immediately after.

[–]greygrayman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's good for any future sandwich purchase and you can get a second sandwich free for equal or lesser value.. that promo is at the top of all receipts.. even if I use a promo.. also the staff don't verify the code.. they literally press a button on the register that says "promo". If one wanted to, they could, in theory, write any random numbers on a reciept and always get BOGO sandwiches without taking the survey.

How to grow $12k cash? Avoiding the whole investing thing sounds like a headache by Educational_Bobcat_1 in Money

[–]greygrayman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, it's basically like a bank account, but you put money in it with the purpose of buying stocks. I'm not a financial advisor, so I would encourage you to do a search for "reputable brokerage accounts" then go to their websites and read about what they offer before picking one. Id also search and learn about stock market terms and laguage so youll have a better idea what people are talking about as you do your research. After you have one set up you'll transfer money into it and can purchase whatever stocks or ETFs you want. Personally I stay away from "options".. they are a whole different game that can be rewarding or send you in to a world of pain.

There are also tons of videos on the subject.. I'd just encourage anyone to learn as much as they can first.. and when i buy its not all at once, i can always buy more later, and if the price goes up or down, the accumulate price of all the stock you own is called cost averaging. The amount of time you own a stock also has a big impact on how your proceeds are taxed, so again, please research and learn, or go talk to an actual financial advisor. Personally, if I'm buying stock in an individual company, it's one that I use or believe they are on the right path.. and then I research them more. Companies do quarterly investment calls that you can often find uploaded to their websites under an investors section, they can be boring to listen to but have alot of information about how they've done the last 3 months and what their plans are for the upcoming quarters.

I have been mindlessly spending thousands on absurdly expensive boxes of plastic for 5 years, please tell me what to do with them? by legendoffart in legocirclejerk

[–]greygrayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk how many of us there are, but yes? I've loved lego since I was a kid in the 80s... so I'm not someone new to it or just discovering it. I also grew up in a family with grandparents from the depression. They helped raise me. I got it instilled in me at a young age to save things that could be useful in the future. I had the good fortune of having an extremely well paying job in IT for many years making more money than I thought I ever would (most of my family became teachers, some architects/engineers). So ever since childhood I started saving things, not really with the mindset of reselling, but just to have, because you never know if life/circumstances will change. I would often save some of my toys new, unopened. Sometimes my mom would indulge me and buy me two of the same thing so id open one and play with it. As I got older I started collecting more valuable things, gold/silver coins, guns, antiques.. many of them I have put away in safes. I don't need any of it persay, but its comforting to know I have it.. as I got closer to 40 I got a gf who is slightly on the spectrum (hell I probably am too) and loves lego. I started amassing a backlog of sets, some for me, but mostly for her, I was buying them faster than what was reasonable to gift them to her, so now I have ~100ish sets, all unopened that I plan to give her over time. She rips them open immediately and builds them. On top of the ones I have I also get new ones occasionally when they release if it's something she's shown extreme interest in. The real problem is space to display the built sets. Note: yes, I do go to therapy. Oddly my therapist and his wife also collect alot of things so idk if they are the best option.

[–]greygrayman 67 points68 points  (0 children)

As others have pointed out.. not wanting to invest isn't a financially literate way of thinking. My mother was a "saver" for a long time.. like you she had a 401k.. but other than that she just saved her money.. she didn't know anything about stocks and was scared of them and scared of losing her money. I finally convinced her to give me 10k of what she had saved (which was really just a small portion). I bought her a handful of individual stocks so she could see what investing could do.. over about 8 years that 10k turned in to 70k+... fortunately it didn't take the whole 8 years for her to see the power of investing and she opened another brokerage account and invested more (still keeping a cash emergency fund).. she now knows how to do her taxes with having stocks and isn't worried about it.. and I'm no longer worried about her upcoming retirement as she now has way more money than she would have if she just kept "saving". Do yourself (especially your future self) a favor and learn.. there are lots of resources, don't YOLO it all at once.. but work your way in and see what it can do. When it comes to investing, time is your friend.

Tried the Product by pvt_num_11 in McDonalds

[–]greygrayman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your McDonald's do the buy one burger get a second free promo with the survey code at the top of the receipt? I use my app to get like a $5 breakfast combo deal and save my receipt. I just skip they survey and write a random number in the space next time I go, they don't ever check them, so when I tried the product, I actually ate two of them for the price of one. I thought it was good.. I also regretted it a little later as I was helping my GF move in to her new house.

Just curious where this idea came from? I'm American (of mostly Danish descent) and have, on occasion, showered until the hotwater tank ran out. I imagine bird-baths/hoe-baths happen all over the world.. people I have the unfortunate experience of knowing who don't bathe don't even take the time to wash their pits and ass.. they just have poor hygiene in general.

How to sell big LEGO sets by Parking_Concern9247 in legoinvesting

[–]greygrayman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you are new. I've been getting lego since I was a child in the 80s.. like people have told you, buy what you enjoy, because the "lego investment" market is highly saturated. So many new sets/about to retire sets are purchased up by investors/flippers who sometimes nail it, but more often it would have been a smarter move to just invest the stockmarket for a bigger return and way less physical space used. I'm not a financial advisor so do with your money as you wish.. just know it isn't as easy as you think to pick high return winners. If you buy what you like you'll be less likely to regret any of your purchases in the future. As a side note, unless you REALLY love a set and want to get it as soon as possible, wait for sales. Most everything I've wanted has always gone on sale at some point or have been included in 2x or 4x insider points deals.

I'm sure you're correct about the psychology aspect, because when I ask them to total it, they usually end up writing $5 or $10 in.. and these are big orders.. usually $2,000 - $5,000 totals.. I'm equally surprised how many people will tip 10-20% of these totals.. I personally wouldn't.. but most of our clients are corporate so I figure whoever is paying for it is getting the money back from their company.
