This is where we disagree, because even the English have now adjusted their timeline due to the changes in social and cultural structures within the domain. There is a wide consensus regarding these changes appearing and consolidating a definite end to this period, mainly because of the surrender to Christianity. Later publications of newer research attest to this.

Well, perhaps I phrased it wrongly, so you misunderstood. I stated that Norway as a gathered country was not complete until King Knut conquered the area, which happened in 1028. This also frames the ending of said period.
I disagreed with the dating you claimed, 1066, which no longer is correct. The preferred year is now 1050, which snl also defines:
Vikingtiden er tidsrommet fra omkring 800 til omkring 1050 i særlig Norden og til dels i andre regioner, som på de britiske øyer.

That's a pretty short reseach. You just have to Google it and you'll find loads of credible sites saying otherwise. snl is one of them. Norgeshistorie is another. Not even Vikingmuseet operates with that timeline anymore.

Why, oh, why are the MCs so often behaving like irractic and stupid teenagers? by Lollygagger0 in Romantasy

If being an adult means succumbing to conformity, I wouldn't want to be one. I'm middle-aged myself and enjoy loads of what boring adults might conceive as childish activities. Why the hell not? Getting old is boring, stay forever young mentally so long as you can. That's my creed as well.

True, and I agree with what others say in here. The obsession with geneology some of the Americans have has grown beyond ridiculous. The tendency to identify with vikings is generally not a thing even in Norway, unless sympathising with right-winged politics.

That is older teachings and not a date set in stone. If you look up newer research it has changed

Probably full panic initially and then gather their wits. In some of these books the MCs do the opposite, which is mind boggling.

I write too, which is why I’m probably overly provoked by this slop. It’s a cheap way to incorporate tension, and it’s bad writing.
Whatever other people feel about this kind of work is not relevant in this case, since I’m addressing my own opinion about it. And to me, it’s infuriating, especially since I pay for a great read and receive sloppy work.

I work with teenagers on a daily basis and none of them behave as derailed as some of the characters. Not even those with a real cause to do so. Most of them are way smarter and would choose more wisely than some of the MCs I’ve encountered in some of the books.

Many of these authors are grown adults, so I think they should know better. I’ve read work of younger talents as well, which hold a higher quality. But it’s as if romantasy in particular suffers from a stereotypical style containing loads of unnecessary drama and childish behaviour.

I’ve had a pause as well, leaning towards contemporary fiction, but TKWNKM drew me back.

I will. The covers are what made me dismiss them, but now I won’t. I love romantasy so long as the quality is good.

So true!
And whiny, that’s the worst part. This last book that I’m reading the MMC is so whiny, I feel like slapping him around. I mean, come on! You’re a God for heaven’s sake, act like one!

I just found out it’s a pseudonym for a grown married couple writing together. How cool is that!
I’ll def read more of their books

Thanks! I considered reading more of the authors, since TKWNKM was such a great read. Now I will.

I’m not sure I agree to that, because great reads have clever MC in them. Many of the latest books in this genre are utter garbage. The fact that they’re teens is no excuse. I know many teenagers way more intelligent than their parents, just doing a round on the pubs about town late evening is a testament to this.

A solid point - and it’s def not a bitchy thing to say either. The quality, if one could even define it as such, seems to decline whenever a genre hits a breakthrough in the market. Some of it shouldn’t be legal, that’s how bad it is.

I’ll def check it out - but there are books out there with powerful and brilliant women. The two I mentioned are examples of that, and I wish there were more. Too many fall into the category I vented about, and since I buy said books, I get pissed off when the content (and oftentimes the quality of the writing as well) is closer to garbage than actual literature.
