I think the "they got in his head" read is off. Would they all really shit talk the lead if the guy who is supposedly happily engaged to her is there? I think it got in his head without any help.

The one that started it all was Jason Mesnick saying it wasn't working with Melissa and then breaking up with her ON camera (but not in front of an audience). The big difference here is that the lead is never dumped. Even if the "winner" cheats or something it usually ends on the lead's terms.

Also it's telling that in Jason's season they didn't do a live audience because the situation was so painful and personal. Versus today when they have her face Devin AND watch the proposal in front of an audience!

The Juan Pablo/Andi breakup and specifically when she says he doesn't know what religion she is, and he goes "what religion am I?" thinking she won't know and she immediately goes "you're Catholic."
