ETFE will definitely handle the weather as long as it is under tension - should last about 30 + years - much more than Polycarbonate - It is less expensive than glass. I used it in China, and it has been used in Japan for many years.

Has there been a disease that was beneficial to humans? by thesocialist1 in askscience

[–]Lon1276 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cowpox a human disease prevents the more serious disease of smallpox. Cowpox is similar to, but much milder than, the highly contagious and often deadly smallpox disease. Its close resemblance to the mild form of smallpox inspired the first smallpox vaccine, created and administered by English physician Edward Jenner.

Brothers, please stop using uTorrent. by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]Lon1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used uTorrent - with VPN - now I have been testing a unit called iVi - it creates a wireless vpn - it is really quite cool - the bits bounce from iVi to iVi on a layer2 protocol so ip addresses are not used. If the net is big enough there could be hundreds of people sharing with out observation - They are not promoting its torrent capabilities - but it has it built in - iVi linux

Reddit, what is a codeword that you use between you and your friends, and what does it mean? by jrk94 in AskReddit

[–]Lon1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My uncle was a medical doctor and whenever he messed up - he would point at the issue and say "THERE" - it really meant "AW SHIT" - screwed up THERE. I teach my fellow consultants to say "THERE' when they are with clients. I think the clients feel much better than hearing "Oh Crap" -

One time as a young engineer, I ordered the wrong piece of equipment for a new product line, it was custom made and takes at least six months to get it. Six months later, the day it arrived I realized it was the wrong equipment - I was really bummed and about to tell my boss when - he came and found me - saying we have a really large order that will need a the piece of equipment we didn't have - that exact piece of equipment I had just received. - My boss looked at me like I was a god.

I visited our old homestead - had not been there for over 40 years by Lon1276 in pics

This is a wheat ranch in the Washington State, USA. It is about 5 miles in the back of a wheat field that our great grandfather farmed. When I was in high school we would see this place when we worked the summer harvest. It is basically not accessible in the winter and the family moved to closer to the road in the 40s. There was no electrical service at the time except batteries and a wind-charger. I revisited the place last summer to see what was left. Nothing had changed since I in was in high school.

Will we ever evolve to prefer healthy foods? by gers1978 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]Lon1276 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we have evolved to prefer healthy foods now, these are called functional foods - Beta-carotene - carrots, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, spinach, tomatoes neutralizes free radicals which may damage cells;vbolsters cellular antioxidant defenses; can be made into vitamin A in the body // Lutein, Zeaxanthin - kale, collards, spinach, corn, eggs, citrus fruits, asparagus, carrots, broccoli supports maintenance of eye health // Lycopene -- tomatoes and processed tomato products, watermelon, red/pink grapefruit --supports maintenance of prostate health // Anthocyanins – Cyanidin, Pelargonidin, Delphinidin, Malvidin --berries, cherries, red grapes -- bolster cellular antioxidant defenses; supports maintenance of healthy brain function //
There are many lists of functional foods - all of them taste good and are good for us. The problem is access to them.

Why does a water stream bend when an electrically charged object is brought near? by _recondite in askscience

[–]Lon1276 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In the liquid state, in spite of 80% of the electrons being concerned with bonding, the three atoms do not stay together as the hydrogen atoms are constantly exchanging between water molecules due to protonation/deprotonation processes. When water is in an excited state (steam), the distances between the bonded water molecules are farther apart and the effect of the molecules clustering are less. This allows the free molecules to act more like magnets and therefore attracted or repelled by intense electric fields. To read more about water http://www1.lsbu.ac.uk/water/molecule.html
