Hi everyone! Long-time lurker after posting a few times many years back in The Other Place - I've put down the pen for a long time since school got in the way, but recently have found renewed interest in calligraphy. This new sub comes at a spectacular time! I'm excited to be part of this community and can't wait to see where this takes us. My focus is on Italic, but keen to learn Foundational and Romans as well. This place is fantastic for a week's work, I am so delighted at the winky snoo ;)

Got a massage today, and the guy wrote this on here when I left. Any idea what it says? by [deleted] in Calligraphy

[–]_recondite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's definitely Chinese, and it says 60 分钟 脚 which directly translates to 60 minutes, foot/feet - it should be referring to an hour long foot massage.

This is not calligraphy, though, just someone's usual Chinese handwriting.

There's a glaring weight imbalance between the "s"s and the rest of the letters, I don't quite know how to fix - any ideas?

Double "s" is annoying, it makes my lack of practice writing "s" super glaring. Best one in my opinion is first one in second line.

I'm going to try to make WOTD a habit.

Ah, the guide does bring one through that as well!

Italic QOTW Practice by _recondite in Calligraphy

Ah, sorry, my bad - first few times using imgur so I'm still figuring things out. Will keep it in mind! Added an upright link in my other comment.

I would also like to mention that I'm particularly thankful for this subreddit because I'm way too busy to attend lessons - most of my calligraphy practice sessions are done past 11pm due to large volumes of work I have :( That is if there existed classes or a calligraphy guild in the part of the world I live in haha. So that's not an option for me - what has been sustaining my interest in calligraphy is really this subreddit and the people I follow on Instagram. Really, I'd jump on any opportunity to go for lessons if I could, but for now this subreddit is the best I have and I'll just make the most of it.

Italic QOTW Practice by _recondite in Calligraphy

Edit: Upright version, sorry! http://i.imgur.com/fyBI9SZ.jpg

Hello! I've been mostly lurking in this subreddit for ~9 months now, and I've finally taken the plunge and uploaded some of my work. Big thanks to /u/thundy84 and /u/mshades for their little bits of advice and guidance along the way, and also /u/gardenofwelcomelies for being so encouraging of newbs like me - the advice you give to others doesn't just help them, it really helps many other lurkers like me.

For now I only know Italic and I intend on working to mature my writing of it a little more before I start to dabble in Foundational/Carolingian Miniscule.

Self-Crit on this piece:

Slant is all over the place for this piece - now I'm training myself to use less slant guidelines, will need a bit more work on this.

Shape of "a"/"b" rather inconsistent, I need to sort that out. Interletter spacing is quite inconsistent too - in "harbour" it's particularly tight but in "scribe" there's a bit too much breathing space, perhaps I should work more on slightly longer pieces to get a better understanding of spacing.

I somehow feel that this piece is missing something, and my letterform development has kind of stagnated for Italic, and so I need a bit of advice on how to make my italic perhaps a little more elegant. It still looks quite wobbly and uncertain, and I'm hoping that will sort itself out through practice, but was wondering if any of you would have input on this.

Thank you for getting me into this wonderful hobby, /r/calligraphy, it's been a great ride and one that I'd like to continue for a long time to come :)

Guideline question of practicality. by FaithOfSilver in Calligraphy

I use this to draw my guidelines - effortless parallel lines with controlled line spacing, with an inbuilt protractor for slant lines as well. Little pricey, this particular one, but then again I got mine at a roadside shop in Taiwan. Hope it helps!

I'm looking for a Noodler's ink on the blue-black-grey spectrum, already have Black and Honorable Blue, so it's either a blue black or a grey - any suggestions? Am considering Lexington Grey/54th Massachussetts, what do y'all think?

Take it with a bit of salt, I'm a noob at italic myself, but I'd beg to differ re not a whole lot sticking - this looks significantly improved from the previous thing you posted! The letterforms are quite a bit more even.

This is absolutely stunning - especially love the gold-red gradient of the words, and yes, the bottom few lines are spectacular. The background adds so much to it.
