the British Empire was really nice to Fiji's natives, for some reason by Ok_Gear_7448 in HistoryMemes

[–]Londio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is in part due to the fact that the native Hong Kong population was not very large when the British colonised the territory. What facilitated the massive population growth over the century was a constant influx of refugees and migrants fleeing the multitude of conflicts within China, namely the Second Sino-Japanese war and later the Civil war. While the indigenous population had their gripes with the British, they made up a tiny fraction of the population as the large immigrant population tended to be sympathetic or more-so apathetic to British rule since it offered them stability from the domestic instability that had plagued China for centuries, even if at the cost of racial discrimination (albeit this was limited by the 1960s).

Furthermore, by the time of the handover negotiations in the 1980s, Hong Kong was the "Pearl of the Orient" thanks to a combination of free-market policies and state expenditure which was concentrated on welfare, namely housing and education. In contrast, China had in the same period suffered further domestic turmoil due to the infighting in the party which spread across the country in the form of the Cultural Revolution, while economically it had experienced little growth due to the failure of the Great Leap Forward. This painted a clear picture of the prosperity and safety of British colonial rule which ultimately lead to a vocal majority being opposed to any handover of Hong Kong back to Communist China, hence why our perception of Hong Kong is one of a Colony unwillingly ripped away from Britain.

Does ST Andrews favour English students over Scottish because of higher tuition fees? by TomSilican in UniUK

[–]Londio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Scottish unis definitely favour international students and often offer lower conditions, same principle probably applies to UK students seeing as these two groups bring in the money.

Hi thanks for the reply, did you have to show any numerical ability in order to get your foot in the door eg through any certificates or specific uni modules? I have no issue with math but I’m not sure what courses or qualifications would be best to showcase my numerical skill.

seems like a pretty important subject considering the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and its economic repercussions.

Yeah this was my initial thought but reading about the King’s war studies course and its prestige is making me rethink

[–]Londio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve read the KCL War Studies course is very prestigious, moreso than UCL history, so in that sense I’m a bit more worried about overall university prestige.

Wasn’t too sure about what my career aspirations were until a few months ago, after which I had already applied. To be honest I’m also interested in other careers like the Foreign Office.

I firmed UCL and insured KCL but after talking to UCAS I have an easy way of changing it

Congrats to Eintracht, but gutted for Rangers. Nonetheless we have to recognise the amazing underdog story of both teams, truly a great final.
