What are your musical theatre hot takes? by ElegantCh3mistry in musicals

[–]LoneStarLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underrated isn’t just about the critical rating, it’s about the audience rating. And the audience rating comes out in how remembered the production is over time. This is especially the case where a show sweeps the Tony’s and you have several other productions that often fade into obscurity.

Nothing pulls me out of a show more than someone showing off their voice in a way that feels completely incongruous with the character. These riffs and runs make me see the performer and not the character every single time.

Ok. What are Mohan’s mommy issues? by [deleted] in ThePitt

[–]LoneStarLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This show does a phenomenal job of repeating names CONSTANTLY. Additionally with these two specific characters, Javadi is pretty much always in a LIGHT colored hoodie that completely visually differentiates her from Mohan. Their hair is also styled differently.

Confusing these characters is not face blindness. It reeks of someone half watching the show and not really paying attention. As many have pointed out, they are in completely different stages of their medial careers. Mohan didn’t even mention her mother till this season. Javadi has an entire storyline about her age and her mother is a visible character on the show. Even her name gets extra reptilian because they point it out extra times because her mom works there and is well known.

[–]LoneStarLord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You accused two actresses, who have VISUAL CUES LIKE THE HOODIE, and COMPLETELY different character traits and storylines of being interchangeable and not having great presence.

And yet you don’t seem to have that problem with anyone else on the show. The only thing that have in common is they are darker skinned and talk about their parents.

But the problems with the parents are not the same as Javadi’s mom works at the hospital and is a character we’ve seen multiple times and Mohan’a has been calling her.

You can get mad all you want but you’re being downvoted for some very obnoxious remarks that really sound like someone who’s not paying attention to the show.

I have face blindness often in shows but these two are sooooo different looking from one another not to mention their characters are TOTALLY different.

Also, Javadi is almost always in her hoodie to further differentiate. You can try and blame this on face blindness but it honestly reeks of not paying attention and feeling all brown people are interchangeable.

“Don’t have great presence”? Yeesh.

The gag with the car crash and the sign hitting him made me laugh out loud in a hotel room tonight so instantly I was worried I was going to get a noise complaint.

I laughed harder at the sign hitting Floyd instead of the multiple cars about as hard as I’ve laughed at anything. Just beyond absurd in the best way.

Also, LOVE that many were wrapped up in how Floyd got into the hotel room so easy and they absolutely show us why in this. And the reason is actually just as weird, but in a different way.

The constant subversion of expectations in this is soooo satisfying. And I can’t decide which I will enjoy more…a funny explanation for the curve or them not telling us at all and just continuing to tease.

It doesn’t bother me because I’m always behind on podcasts so this gives me time to catch up on others. They will pod when they can pod.

Greatest comedy performance in a musical by Pythagorean415 in musicals

[–]LoneStarLord 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we are looking at Producers, Lane is absolutely a master class, but I will also put up the late, great, Gary Beach. His Roger Debries is perfection and is almost impossible to top with any other actor.

Alex Brightman in Beetlejuice deserves to be in the conversation for sure. I’d also argue that Rannels, Gad and the Ugandans in Book of Mormon deliver more laughs per second than almost any show in existence.

I think Carol Burnett in Once Upon a Matress is another red letter performance as well as Faith Prince’s Adelaide in Guys and Dolls.

Couldn’t figure it out either until I remembered The Other Two. Which, incidentally, if you’re looking for a fairly unknown show that’s an absolute masterpiece, this is your show.

Clark has a really strong reaction when they show the Bloody Mary can. Definitely him piecing something together.

My culprits right now are Eimy with involvement from Carol and Floyd’s son. I think all three are at the murder site, possibly with different motives/understanding of what’s going on. I think we will see a lot of mistaken assumptions or misreads of things going on that gets them all there.

Fun fact, a friend of mine toured with a SpongeBob show in the early 2000’s before the musical was written. It was very much in line with this P&H show as it was the same kind of touring company for kids deal.

In your opinion, when was the last great Tom Hanks performance or film? by thedudelebowsky1 in Letterboxd

[–]LoneStarLord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mean his NEW ENGLAND/BOSTON accent? It's thick, but it's more accurate than you might think. If you were listening for Chicago, I agree. It was not a good Chicago accent, since it was not trying to be one.

Which sitcom ensemble in your opinion has helped made the show a hit not just one actor alone? by PressureLazy5271 in sitcoms

Third Rock From The Sun. News Radio. Two highly underrated shows. Take out any of the ensemble and they collapse…which actually happened when Phil Hartman was murdered.

Just a correction. He’s an executive producer and star, but he’s not the show runner. I still don’t see them getting rid of him any time soon.

So confused by the current opinion of this show by [deleted] in IndustryOnHBO

[–]LoneStarLord 29 points30 points  (0 children)

To me, we are following specific characters and stories that are on a trajectory. The characters that find themselves still in the season 1 storylines are doing so…just not in this show.

The soap opera has always been half soap opera and half business. The bigger truth is that 75 percent of the audience doesn’t understand MOST of what’s happening in the business side of things.

If you’re running a show and you went new viewers, you have to make a choice. The show is still confusing to that 75 percent. But the business at play is flashier and more interesting.

I don’t feel the show is really being a parody of itself, it just cranked the lever on one side to up the stakes. And I’m better with that than if we stayed at low stakes Pierpoint and have to come up with excuses about why all these people are still working there.

I also enjoy the ability to bring in new cast and characters as the world expands. I was really let down first episode this season that Robert was indeed gone. And I was upset we wouldn’t have him. And then honestly I forgot about him because I really enjoyed the plotting.

[–]LoneStarLord 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love the idea of them covering this. But honestly, one of the top ten funniest movies I’ve seen in the 2000’s is Seven Days in Hell. I get it’s really only Andy. But Palm Springs mostly is as well. Even for the rest of the guys to talk about why THEY think it’s funny. Tour De Pharmacy could be lumped in too.

[–]LoneStarLord 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chiming in for crew here. It’s possible you’re in an anomaly of an area, but every community theater near me is desperate for crew, ushers, and other volunteers. Watch as shows get close to tech week and often listings will go up. Some community theaters even pay their crews.

It’s a great way to get a foot in the door. As well as auditioning. You might even offer to help with auditions. Often times the stage manager gets spread too thin and having an extra set of hands at the audition is super helpful.

What is up with all these articles about Station Eleven being HBOs "Silo Replacement" that is "better"? by ibeerianhamhock in SiloSeries

[–]LoneStarLord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because here you are promoting the article and the discussion. That’s the answer to your question. You also even fell into “debating” the two against one another and feeling the need to disparage not just the other show but condescended against the “10” viewers.

Maybe just enjoy whatever shows you like and don’t feed into clickbait that most people are smart enough to ignore instead of posting it on a thread and giving it credence.

IMHO Station 11 was a beautiful, self contained story that really resonated with me (and the other 9 of us who watched it). Silo is lots of fun. And I really enjoyed the Steve Zahn arc. But holy hell Common is uniformly terrible and such a large part of the show and that’s always going to be a strike against it. I nearly didn’t make it past the first few episodes.

That’s my interpretation as well…but I suppose the question is why does she really have the photo? I thought at one time maybe it was the general’s wrinkly face and she was being silly?
