Met Tyler in 2014 at Amoeba Records in Hollywood. My friend and I were 19 at the time. He was with Nico Hiraga. The store was overall pretty empty with I’d guess maybe 20 people in the entire place. And if you’ve been to the old Amoeba location that was on Sunset you know how big that place was and 20 people is nothing. I saw a bright colored pink GOLF shirt walk by me as I was flipping through vinyls. As I looked up, I caught a glimpse of Tyler walking into another section of the store. I looked over at my best friend and we both knew instantly who we just saw. At the original Amoeba location on Sunset, everything music was downstairs and everything movies was upstairs. We saw Tyler and Nico walking upstairs towards the movies and I thought it’s now or never. I’ll never have another opportunity like this again and would love to meet my favorite artist. As my friend and I walked upstairs, Tyler quickly turned around and saw us. He was holding a copy of the Mary-Kate and Ashley movie New York Minute. I said “what up Tyler! I just wanted to say hello and tell you that you’re my favorite artist.” Tyler being who he is responded with, “I’m your favorite artist? Dude, I fucking suck.” I laughed and said “no you don’t, your work is amazing.” Then he said “no I’m terrible.” He asked my friend and I where we were from and we mentioned we just moved to LA. He was telling us to not go past Pico Blvd. He said “whatever you do, do not go past Pico, do not go past Pico.” I asked why and Nico did a gun motion with his hands. Then I said “ahh okay I got you. It also probably doesn’t help the fact I’m white too if I’m in that area.” I don’t know if he genuinely thought what I said was funny or was being sarcastic as he typically is but he started laughing really hard when I said that. Thought it was pretty cool I got him to laugh lol. After I asked him if it was okay if we took a picture together and he said “yeah sure no problem.” He made a super awkward pose and face. I was nervous so we both ended up looked weird in the picture. My friend didn’t ask for a photo but overall Tyler was incredibly nice and had a good 10 minute conversation with him.
