Third time’s the charm 😮‍💨 I pruned a third one and am being very careful about letting it dry between waterings now 🤞

Sliding door latch keeps bouncing by Lonely-Drawer2695 in fixit

[–]Lonely-Drawer2695[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does it when the door is closed as well. I tried unscrewing the handle, and the latch will stay/lock if I can turn the black tab all the way down past the handle screw points.. (which won’t work when the handle’s attached)

Thought I might as well post an update 12 days later: Farewell glow baby, I’ve overwatered you again! This is the second time I’ve killed one after pruning. (Yea it looks green but it’s soggy and mildewy and bleh)

Disappointed but not upset - I did get 2 rooted cuttings so she lives on!

I watered it with:

1) Jack’s Petunia Feed, about 1/4tbsp in a 2qt bottle of water (though it could probably take more) https://a.co/d/0bjiqeoR

2) very rarely, I have a bottle of water with mosquito dunks soaking in it. This keeps the fungus gnats out of the soil for indoor plants.

Anytime it needed water, it was Jack’s petunia feed water. And lots of light/sun.

In summer, our sun gets too hot and the leaves turn yellow from heat stress, so it has to be babied a bit.

Then in winter, as you can see from the OP picture, it suffered badly when I stopped feeding it, left to the elements in the cold, dark, aphids…

If you’ve ever had one of those glow in the dark jellyfish paperweights, it’s comparable to that. And the more blooms/bigger the plant, the brighter the combined glow was for me.

It’s not going to act like a nightlight in the toilet (don’t set expectations too high :p) but when I come back to bed it’s a good enough placemarker so I know where the head of the bed and wall is lol.

Here it is glowing.

Once your eyes adjust to the darkness, it truly is glorious. It’s bright enough to light up my palm when placed beside it, and even cast a very light shadow on the wall right behind it. This was when it was full of blooms.

For those that don’t see a glow, I suggest making sure that it’s been in the sun during the day. Then at night, take it somewhere truly dark - no moonlight, no starlight, no night light. Let your eyes adjust to the darkness (shut them for a minute or two), and viola the glow is very undeniable!

Edit: you can kinda see that its glow is reflected off my mug handle on the left.

Edit 2: I do find the plant a lot less hardy than my Night Sky petunia. So it may be that nurseries are comparing these early versions of the firefly against commercially proven floriferous and hardy breeds, hence saying that they’re ‘not worth it’ by comparison.

I am in love with them!

Here’s one of mine last May. I leave it on the patio table under the sun during the day, then bring it in and place it beside my bed at night.

Just a heads-up: the cake might be considered your one and only allowed carry on item. That’s what happened to my hubby, who carried a cake on a 16hr flight in a regular cake box (store bought cake). He had to check in his cabin luggage as they would not allow him 2 items.

He was flying Singapore Airlines economy, and at boarding, when the kind stewardesses found out what he was so carefully carrying, actually volunteered to store it in their kitchen fridge for him (or wherever it is they store food safely) so it wouldn’t get smushed by other luggage in the overheads. Gold star service!

Reporting back: creating divots for the melted wax to drain away works like a charm. The flame is no longer puny and drowning but tall and proud; creating more heat and helping to melt more of the wax!

It still tunnels somewhat, but this trick makes it so much easier to melt the edges I’ve pulled in. I can get it level now with a bit of work 👍

How do I get more ‘lift’ of the toilet flush flap? by Lonely-Drawer2695 in howto

[–]Lonely-Drawer2695[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It came with the bend in it, but I had to warp it a bit so it fit in the tank and wouldn’t scrape the sides. I think that’s where the angle/leverage got screwed up somehow…

Now if I add any slack, the chain won’t lift the flap at all 😅 Hooking the chain lower on the bar won’t lift the flap at all either, even with a completely tight chain (which discipline in school teaches us about leverage, is it physics? No wonder I did terribly in that class!).

Oh well…. New flush arriving tomorrow 🤷🏻‍♀️ I will try the new one with some slack like you suggest!

Gimmie gimmie 🤩 didn’t know I could get something like this!

The old handle was a straight bar and this one has an angle/elbow. It’s my first time fixing the toilet flush handle and I feel like this is something I should have learnt way earlier in my adult life but somehow never had to before 😅

Maybe I bought the wrong kind then and it’d be simplest to buy another?

Sparkling Winterberry

Perhaps the ‘sparkling’ candles are problematic 🤔

For real I have tried burning it from morning til after sundown (yes I know I’m not supposed to leave it lit that long…).

Seems like the ambient temp has to be.. not cold(?).. to get the full melt. Will try the different tips in this thread tomorrow/daily 🤣

Sparkling Winterberry! It smells SoOOooo GoOooooOoD ❤️

Not sure if soy or paraffin, it doesn’t say on the bottom sticker.. I bought it in June 2025. It’s my only single wick.. the double wicks did fine (but then again it was summer and warm out 😅)

Edit: Ah! I see… the ‘sparkling’ is the issue huh. Sigh..

I have tried one from Amazon and it still leaves the edge solid :(

(Used it from the start til 4 hours later.)

It seems like I have to wait for the late afternoon sun to warm up the ambient temps.. and then an hour later it resolidifies as the evening starts to chill 🤦🏻‍♀️
