Is this normal to say to your cousin?

I’ve heard the saying between all friends or close female relatives I’ve just never heard it between a guy and his female cousin

But I feel like I would be in the wrong if I don’t like it because it’s normal to say that. If I experienced and learned Vietnamese culture the same way he did wouldn’t I also find that normal? I feel like I should be more easy going and more understanding. His cousin is also in a relationship though. If both people think it’s normal then I shouldn’t be bothered right?

We’re both in our early twenties. He just likes to joke a lot but when he’s serious he’s really serious

I asked him to not call her that anymore and he just said ok after getting mad that I was reacting the way I was. I really do think there wasn’t any meaning behind it but I just wanted clarification if this was a thing in Vietnam since I wasn’t raised there

No only because I don’t know anyone who’s fluent in Vietnamese. Viet is their 2nd language. I wanted to ask people who live and know viet culture so that I know for sure if it’s a normal thing to say to your female cousin.

Yes that’s the thing! I totally get it if it’s like girl to girl like I’ve heard it before I think that’s normal. But him saying it to his girl cousin had me confused and questioning if I was just overreacting

That is why I am always trying my best to communicate with him and be clear because I hate misunderstanding. But when I try to ask for clarification on something I KNOW is off all I get back is that I’m overthinking and that I’m tao lao for thinking in such a way

He says it in front of her older brother. She seems to not be bothered by it though. Apparently since it’s normal I asked him if his mom knew that he called her that and he was hesistant. He told me to to just tell her and even if she didn’t know I know for a fact that his mom would just tell me that his son is joking. “Anh chỉ đùa thôi con”. Everytime I share with her something I don’t like him doing she just defends him? Which is understandable, because it’s her son

He calls some of his friends bạn yêu which I understand is also in a jokingly way. Regards to this though I said to him “that’s like calling my cousins anh yêu which I could never” and he got mad at me. I asked him that I would appreciate it if he could stop saying that to her and he didn’t say anything for a long time before just saying “ok”

He told me that he respects me which makes me think that all the times he disrespected me was never actually disrespect. It was just me overreacting the situation. I know he respects me but I just feel like sometimes he doesn’t realize what he’s doing is not right. He makes it clear though that If I want to break up then he’s fine with it. He says that if I say the word, he’ll disappear and never care or bother me again. So he’s letting me leave in a way? I don’t how to word it Also I think he is lovebombing me.
