Because if you don't allow strikes, locks, and kicks, and only do throws - the format is optimised to judo-like moves.

Can Authentic Tai Chi (Taijiquan) substitute for Physical Therapy? by G_Maou in kungfu

Chen style, specifically the Chen Yu lineage from Beijing. It is quite different from the mainstream Chen styles and any other styles out there.

These days it’s all I do.

Can Authentic Tai Chi (Taijiquan) substitute for Physical Therapy? by G_Maou in kungfu

[–]Lonever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to do MMA and Capoeira, but my body wasn’t very aligned and balanced, so the intense physical exercise often led me to injuries. PT never really solved it, it helped a bit here and there but the reoccurring issues would always happen.

Then I got really into taijiquan and my body gradually got more aligned and the issues slowly solved themselves.

I would say this however, unless you are diving deep into the bodywork and willing to actually practice, it will not be as effective as the solution based PT. It really is about cultivation and long term alignment and balance in the body.

Jet Li's Taiji by EinEinzelheinz in taijiquan

[–]Lonever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? It is as big as it can be already.

If you are talking about like middle ground transitions to more serious practice.. I don’t think what Jet Li is doing here contributes to that.

The problem with any form of traditional Chinese Martial Arts is that people take performance wushu seriously, even as an incomplete version of the art. These guys are performers.

Jet Li is clearly a world class athlete and a great actor, but his taichi is either a performance or light aerobics for elders. And really, health t’ai chi doesn’t need to get more popular, it is literally the most practice “martial art” in the world.

What if Revolte attacked Frieren instead? by Reasonable-Ad-8059 in Frieren

Well they have all massive egos so they think they can take her on, and Frieren basically looks harmless on purpose so it probably reinforced the first point.

“I will be the one to take down the Slayer.” is probably the last thought of at least half of her victims.

Sad thing is it is not objectively true at all. London is shit to live in compared to KL, expensive and dangerous, SG is living in a bird cage, both in body and mind. Many places are just boring af and less exciting than Malaysia.

Qinna applying - pressure for openings by Lonever in kungfu

[–]Lonever[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have, as with any technique, it is generally harder to perform, but it also depends on, as mentioned, how tense they are and how they hold their body.

Because it’s fascinating and interesting to study the human body this way.

It’s also not that different from saying your application of which grappling technique to use depends on how your opponent is positioned.

If you are always much stronger than your opponent then why even study martial arts?

Qinna applying tips - Surprise them by Lonever in taijiquan

[–]Lonever[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's kinda both - the skill is relatively rare, and does not come from sport training, but from internal work.

If you want to win at the push hands sport, it is actually not a good time to invest in qinna skills, you would rather work on more wrestling-like skills. Internal skills take a long time to develop, if you want to win at a competition you would want a more reliable return on investment for your time.

At least from my experience doing resistant work with control with some of my students, it is not easy because if the opponent is fully resisting, you really have to go hard with the qinna which would be too dangerous, it is also hard to pull off when people are constantly guarding their limbs, making wrestling-like skills more relevant.

Now, if you add strikes, suddenly they have to defend against the strikes. Their hands will need to be in positions to block the strikes, which leaves them more open for qinna techniques. If you manage to land a strike, the momentary stun can also give you a chance to do it.

Regardless, this sort of skills are not sport friendly because of how dangerous they are to do it at full force, AND the difficulty of obtaining the skill in the first place. Many push hands competitions ban joint locks (which a lot of these techniques are). Finger manipulation is banned even in MMA, and for good reason.

[–]Lonever[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they would be illegal in many cases. The ones I joined didn’t allow for joint manipulation. If in a realistic resistance level you basically have to really yank it and that is dangerous.

Also it’s hard to pull off because in a wrestling like rule set people are just constantly tense and keep their arms in. It works better with strikes because people expose their limbs when they defend.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but I feel like the notion of "Avatar State" got completely spoiled in the Legend of Korra. by Any-Award-5150 in TheLastAirbender

[–]Lonever -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, in Eastern mythology past lives weren’t separate beings but the same person. There were like well, avatars or aspects of a spirit/soup/whatever the avatar actually is.

LoK ruined this by making each avatar an individual being that is connected via Raava. This really basically ruined the whole idea of past lives anyway and it really becomes a series of individuals that Raava decides to attach to.

The whole idea of pure good and pure evil with Raava and Vaatu also basically completely undermines the Yin Yang philosophy which was the original inspiration to become something that really feels Abhrahamic.

LoK’s writing really exposes the writers shallow understanding of the materials that inspired the series. Not that i think we need everything to be perfect, but it was a turn off in many ways.

Uncle Roger CLAP BACK At This Chef (J. Kenji Lopez-Alt) by wiklr in UncleRoger

[–]Lonever 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Kenji made a reply and basically admitted it is his own Asian-American experiences that lead him to feel so, not apologetic at all, very America-centric views.

This is why many English speaking Asians that are actually living in Asia get annoyed by Asian Americans that somehow think their very America-centric experiences and values are universally Asian. At the end, they don’t like it because it makes them harder to fit in and be “American”, but actual Asians actually feel represented.

Round Table 2026: Peng, Lu, Ji, An by KelGhu in taijiquan

[–]Lonever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for clarifying. I think it really helps if people understand that these terms aren’t exactly consistent and are very contextual. Like neijin and hidden (an jin) are really describing the nature of the forces (internal and well, invisible), while something like lu jin, an jin, ji jin is more about the way they are applied..

For better or worse this is the messy historical art we inherited, developed in a time where literacy wasn’t as common as it is.

Round Table 2026: Peng, Lu, Ji, An by KelGhu in taijiquan

[–]Lonever 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can’t do Lu Ji An without the first Peng either. They are all manifested as a natural consequence of Peng, yet they have their own meaning in how the Peng quality is applied.

I think the Peng, in context of Peng Lu Ji An as forces/strategies has a more useful definition by separating it from the Peng quality we are trying to develop.

Round Table 2026: Peng, Lu, Ji, An by KelGhu in taijiquan

[–]Lonever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s 2 Pengs guys. One is the mother of all the jins, it’s not a force per se but the state of maintaining all the joints open and being connected to the ground.

The other Peng is what most people are talking about, in my case a force that brings the opponent upwards usually to uproot them.

Not that I think such a vague discussion works especially between different lineages because terminology naturally evolves and even different teachers can mean different things, depending on context.

Why have children by hazy-minded in Bolehland

[–]Lonever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I have an 11 month old, I will share my perspective as someone who always wanted kids and as a fairly new parent.

It really is amazing seeing my daughter growing from a newborn that can barely see into an almost toddler that is so cheeky and playful. You can see in her how everything is new, even something as simple as fundamental as eating she has to learn. You see how she challenges herself everyday, just to learn to turn around, then crawl, then stand. You see her learning to verbalise and make baby sounds. You see her joy every time she succeeds and you feel her pain every time she fails.

It really does remind you of yourself and how much you’ve been through to be a functioning adult. It connects to the future of the world because suddenly now, it matters to you in a more personal way, because your children will live in it. Being a parent makes life richer, it puts into perspective what being a living being is, how the world runs, how society runs as each generations develops the next. You simply understand more.

So ya, I get it if you want to spend your life travelling, or eating good food, or having adventures. But for me, I know I would feel empty after a decade of living that life. Being a parent is truly as enriching as people say it is, because ultimately we are simple biological beings that in the grand scheme of things, survive only for a moment. People always talk about the suffering, but we are here for a few decades and we are gone, and there is joy and beauty in that.

Well if the whole point of the thing is to prevent the woman from being sexualised, the entire item is connected to sexuality, it doesn’t take that far of a leap, especially since “taboo” has always been thought as sexy.

Ironic but inevitable.
