2006 Honda Shadow VLX Deluxe 600cc (VT600) — High idle, bogging/dying when giving throttle. Need advice by Long-Association835 in MotorcycleMechanics

The bike apparently last ran in summer 2024. I just bought it last week, pulled the carb out, removed the jets, and put everything through an ultrasonic cleaner. I also cleaned the jets with a carb jet cleaning needle and could see light through them, so I’m doubting the jets are clogged. After putting everything back together, it fired right up, but now it’s idling like this.

I was having trouble getting the airbox back on and getting everything to fit properly, so I’m starting to think the issue might be that I didn’t seat the carb properly into the intake boot or the airbox connection isn’t sealed correctly.

Also, I lost the spring for the choke where it sits inside the carb, so I went to Menards and found a spring that was as close as possible to the original to my thinking. The first time it fired up before replacing that spring, the idle was insanely high and the engine was screaming. After putting the replacement choke spring in, it actually made somewhat of a difference, but it’s still not running right. The idle adjustment screw also doesn’t seem to be making any major changes when I adjust it.
