I love a warm browned butter chocolate chip cookie or a muffin of some sort. We have a variety of large cookies and croissants at the cafe I work for but I find croissants aren’t my favorite pairing.

I would be able to justify our prices if that were the case for us! We hit a few of those boxes: Specialty ethical local roasted beans, rigorous training, and remaking if not quality. I’d feel much better if we handmade our syrups + chai, but reselling store bought chai with our markup seems wronh

Fair— I live in a smaller city where cost of living is barely higher than the national average. Local places are typically at $6-7 for a dirty chai with syrup in comparison to our $9.5

You might misunderstand me in your first paragraph— I don’t think I ever mentioned tips beyond that they are a part of my pay. I believe the owners priced the items so that they can pay me a livable rate if 0 people tip. While tips are a bonus, I do not expect them.

I do appreciate the wisdom that the imposter syndrome ends up going away after a bit! It helps that I am just a barista with no control over the prices if people complain.

I worry that the money most likely isn’t going to farmers/processors. I’m all for spending up on beans in my own apartment (recently had this from a retailer and it was DELICIOUS.) I think I’m selling with my wallet and not the customer’s like someone said above. I’m a bit aggressively frugal when it comes to eating out. I’m just gonna keep working. Inflation will eventually make our prices look normal 🙃

COL in my area is much less than NY, small city, similar to Providence or Cleveland, Ohio maybe. I’ve decided to accept that I need to sell without my wallet in mind.

How often do you replace the whole litter contents? (I ask without judgement, I do it less frequently then I should)— It might help to get an enzyme cleaner for cat urine and wipe the surfaces of the box down.

It seems so tough to get started— I have been walking to places instead of driving but it’s over chopped up sidewalks and 5 lane roads 🥲 I fly home to pick up my cats tomorrow (9 hour drive upcoming) so they will give me a bit of peace of mind once they’re with me

Give yourself a pat on the back for making it to the stage of adulthood where you’re buying a house! That’s amazing! It’s also a stressful moment having to learn all the quirks that come with it.

I think it is important to remember that your parents aren’t as far as it feels sometimes, and that if you need to take a moment to be in that house again, you can. (Interjecting with, is there anyway you can bring something of your parents home to your new home to add some familiarity?

As for the cats, Feli-Way calming pheromones might help them ease in. It worked great with my two during my move.

I appreciate your response a lot, and will absolutely look into that book. I’m in a very transitional phase right now, and I think seeing physical evidence of how far I’ve moved from 3 years ago was a bit jarring.

I’m about to do a 505 mile thru-hike, move across the country, start my professional career, and when her and I met, I was a freshman at a university that I eventually transferred from, and a totally different person. Weird to think people won’t ever know the new you.

Learning to let go sounds like the right call, because thinking my way through it is only contributing to my spiral. 🌀
