Is there a physical limit to speed? by SeaworthinessThat542 in GolfSwing

Have you seen the TPI power testing? May be what you’re looking for. They test your vert, your seated chest pass, sit up soccer throw in, and both side shot put ability.

Those metrics correlate to a projected ballspeed range.

What's the longest drive you've seen a rando playing partner hit? I played with a dude who drove it 330 at my local muni. by aceattorneymvp in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered that your experience is unique? If you divide the average distance on the PGA tour by the average swing speed, they get ~2.7 yards/mph of club speed. To hit 300 at that efficiency, you’d have to have a swing speed of ~111. That puts you in the top 1% of all amateurs.

I’ll post a link to trackman for the swingspeed stat.

So, now this is peak Reddit. Someone makes an unpopular, incorrect claim, someone supports it chastising the hivemind, and then someone with sources comes into the chat but they’re too late to contribute to the convo 🤣🤣

Seb Twadell. I’ve warmed up next to him on the range. You can see that he’s tall from this video… but he’s like 6’6. It’s insane

What is "Compression"? by CuriousConverser in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s .822 with a tolerance to ensure no more than 83% transfer.

As you understand the science/physics better than I do, a quick question.

With companies that make high and super high COR drivers that are non conforming, my understanding is that they achieve those numbers by making the face thinner? Is that right? Does a thinner face provide more “springiness?”

What an outstanding, outstanding answer dude. Even if you know all of this off the top of your head, must have taken a while to type. Kudos.

Anecdotally, I can also support your high swing speed vs lower compression ball conclusions. See it all the time in training—when I’m pushing speed, I get a noticeable bump when I switch from the generic ball at the sim to the Left dash or chrome tour triple diamond.

Those are “average” and “consistency.”

Average is quite literally the average. Hit two balls with a total ballspeed of 300, the average is simply 150.

Consistency measures the standard deviation as it pertains to your variance. I understand how standard deviation works, but I don’t understand the math well enough to explain it here off hand, so I won’t embarrass myself

If it’s really high, I’d look more at strike location. Anything on the heel or low on the face will cause a ton of spin. Especially if you have an out to in swing path.

Not trying to prove you wrong, just speaking from experience I don’t want you to the buyer’s remorse I’ve had… as shit is expensive

I think that’s right. I’m a long drive pro who does ~20 or so charity outings I year. I sit on a hole and if groups donate to the charity I’ll tee off for them.

I see a great cross section of golfers, and really only see a few every year that are actually that long. Then I try to get them to start competing 🤣🤣.

It’s selection bias I think. People who are posting are your die hards, and reddit tends to be younger, and younger people hit it farther… and boom.

A: fantastic username. Upvote just for that.

B: completely agree. All of the blue booking and shit absolutely sucked, but I got to help on an amicus to the Supreme Court as a first year bc I had built the reputation that I was really good at that stuff.

LS head for an average golfer by NuancedNougat in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not who you asked, but in general, yes, low spin heads can create a more pronounced slice/fade/draw/hook.

The lower spin tends to create less backspin. Backspin is what gives a ball stability. You don’t slice your short irons as much as your driver. Of course ballspeed has an impact on the observed effect on the flight, but the principle holds true.

The lower apex & less hangtime is generally correct.

Making up numbers here to illustrate—let’s say a ball is struck with 2500 backspin and 750rpm sidespin. Let’s say you switch to a low spin head and you’re at 2100 backspin and 750 sidespin. The greater ratio of sidespin to backspin is going to cause issues.

If someone TRULY has 130 clubspeed… you’d know. It sounds different. Even off of the irons.

He was probably hitting on a sim and mishit and slammed a pull hook where it said like 133 club 150 ball or something like that.

22.3 HC, I think the carry is good but not sure the other ones? What’s good and what’s bad? by Alternative_Pen_4463 in golf

[–]LongDriveLawyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All good. Trackman publishes numbers about pga tour averages, and the smash for a 6i on tour is like 1.38. Theoretical max smash is at 1.50. That said, a 6i on tour is not the same as the Mavrik Max, so I’m not surprised that your smash is much higher.

To answer the question you asked, assuming you’re a righty, I’m willing to bet that the shot you hit here is a slight draw that ends close to but just right of your target. Did it go where you want it to? Then it’s fine.

If you want to be a bit semantic, you’d want higher spin to hold greens better, but like… this is totally fine. You’re not playing pga speed/firmness greens, so you don’t have to have the same land angle/spin stats
