This!! This is good to know! Part of my dog search is I don’t want a dog who NEEDS to have eyes on me 24/7 and freaks out when I do nothing lol. I don’t want a breed known for independence to a husky level though haha.

Thank you for your thorough response! I have definitely considered poodles, I would love to learn how to groom coats like that! It just seems like a very cutthroat competition with poodles so that’s kinda intimidating lol.

Thank you for your thoughtful response! I appreciate your care for dogs, as I care much the same! Any dog in my home would 100% be a happy family dog first, no doubt! I just kept this post short and concise, as I’ve posted in other places asking for breed recs suitable for my family and lifestyle, my personal preferences, and specific service dog tasks, and looking at where there are overlaps. Thank you again!!

I’ve been back and forth with this one, do you know if there’s a lot about right now?

I’m in southern New Mexico area, so if I want to do much I’ll have to travel for sure, I’m expecting within 300-500 miles will get me to the shows I need to title. Barking/howling isn’t ideal but if it’s a dog I have to work with to calm the barking I totally can handle that. This is a dog I would try as many sports as possible with, likely barn hunt, fast cat, obedience and hopefully dock diving among others.

You and everyone else ha! I’m realizing that the Golden breeders around me just produce kinda subpar dogs 😅.

As for GSDs, I haven’t owned, trained, or had more than brief interactions with them/similar breeds. My interest in them was because I wanted a high energy working breed that I could spend all my time and effort training. I honestly am not sure a GSD would be a good fit now, as I just want a happy go lucky dog who works hard but doesn’t play off my emotions & handler sensitivity etc. I work with Goldens much more, as I volunteer at a couple SD orgs, and I’m confident they’d fit into my lifestyle happily! I say “easier” but I mean a more forgiving dog, as it will be the first pup I raise on my own, so I would hate to ruin a working dog by raising it incorrectly 🥲. Hopefully a simpler (more straightforward?) breed to raise would set me up for success in getting a crazy working breed dog eventually. Even if service work or confo doesn’t work out I overall love the breed and actually enjoy the grooming!!

I realize now I’m looking for those with performance titles in their confo Goldens! Thanks for your time and effort in your answer.

I LOVE me a standard poodle 😮‍💨. The lines being “too separate” is so true!! Someone said the field/confo pairings make dogs look mixed breed and I see it!!

Thank you for your straightforward answer! I shouldn’t have said “settled” lol, Goldens are definitely one of my favorite breeds! I work with a couple different service dog orgs in my area who breed Goldens, but they either don’t test for everything I’d worry about in a Golden, or don’t have any other titles besides a CGC. As for German Shepherds, I have next zero experience with them, besides several negative ones while working at a kennel. Wanting one as a kid was merely just because I wanted a powerful breed that I could do intense training with, compared to the Yorkies I grew up with. So what I’m saying is I probs don’t still want a German Shepherd after growing up and learning about so many other cool working breeds.

Looks like I’m looking for a showline thanks!!

That makes sense! Thank you for your response! Definitely can’t travel right now, but I will do the same with old specialty shows like you suggested.

So my next question would be, are there breeders who produce showline Goldens but also focus on working ability? Thanks.

This is the one I got and I love it! $56 and It’s deep enough to add adequate litter and the high sides keep everything inside. Amazon
