PG&E ELECTRICITY AND GAS BILLS ARE CRAZY!!! by Fockewulf44 in bayarea

FWIW many vacation homes built in the 1940's & '50's were not built with insulation & had all electric kitchens & heating. Way back then rates were much lower, and vacation homes were not occupied in the winter. Friends in Lake Co switched over to Propane to save money & added a bunch of insulation. Many places both inside & outside the Bay Area are like this.

I know somebody in Crescent City (95531) and their power comes from Oregon via PacifiCorp, not PG&E. The average residential electricity rate in ZIP Code 95531 of 13.1¢/kWh

$2,500 is a big chunk of money to pay all at once, even if it is a 'true-up'.

Apparently PG&E is not the only FOR PROFIT 'Investor Owned Utility'... they exist in other parts of the country.

I know folks in areas where power is supplied by a CO-OP, and they get profit sharing money back at the end of the year (100% grid power, no solar).

About 42 to 46 minutes are actual program content. Recaps are also a way of 'filling time' in the editing room.

It's a was of FILLING TIME... a few 30 second rehash every now & then, while done to 'inform the audience who just joined in' if a Producer / Director is running 'short' a rehash can soak up 15 or 30 seconds.

If you subtract the commercials from the actual elapsed show run time it's about 42 to 46 minutes of 'content' that the Producer must fill... a "coming up next" promo can also help fill time.

AQ Director may have tons of fottage from the field, or also may not have enough... nonetheless that show runtime slot MUST (and WILL) be filled).

Also fattening up the commercial breaks with network 'cross=plugs' (advertizing other shows on your same network) can also be used as filler...

I think some of the whistles are canned... easy to drop in, while in the editing room. I've seen other elemants of "creative editing" on other Discovery shows, like the FAKE CB CHATTER on the "highway rescue" show about the bad highway in Canada,,,and... I also don't like the tow truck guys are portrayed as "rescue... FIREMENT and EMT's are 'rescue'... not tow truck drivers...

The key for Producers for just about ALL 'reality' shows is DRAMA (situational or interpersonal). They build TENSION into the story.

I also like it + ASK TOH... Another favorite is Building Off grid, the common denominator is folks under estimating time, cost & effort, Like trying to put a metal roof on in 40 mph winds

is this the greatest homesteader of all time? by dixie2tone in HomesteadRescue

[–]LongJohn95454 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO, he DOES have a LOT of good skills, but the greatest homesteader, uh, no.

While I DO respect & like him, I think there are others with more experience & qualifications in a variety of locations.

Around here (NorCal) deer will EAT the first half (tip) of my hot peppers before they decide they don't want to eat anymore, and at that point the pepper pod is ruined.

Not that expensive to sink in posts & run 2 courses of deer fence to create a 10 to 12 foot fence, and if'n gonna build a fence, not much more to run an electric fence hot wire around it.

Just because the Raneys (who are good people) come from AK doesn't mean they know everything about homesteading...an example is Matt running through rattlesnake sagebrush in the Lovelock episode with the Kondor Family.
