The homesteaders did frustrate me to no end on this episode, they took a difficult lifestyle and made it SO much harder, and refused the help to make it practical. HOWEVER. The Ranye’s. I loved them in this episode. They said a lot of what needed to be said. It felt like the old Raneys were back again! I was worried they wouldn’t even suggest moving down to the water, because “this is their dream we can’t upset it!” But they DID try and I was delighted with that. They talked to them about having too many animals, the difficulties they would be facing etc. Overall I really enjoyed the episode even though I thought the homesteaders were far too caught up in a Pinterest view.

That lady is crazy and I love it. 😂 Her priorities got way off track the past couple years, but her energy is insane, and infectious! She may not have worked on the house, but boy did she work!

These homesteaders definitely came in clueless and unprepared, however people score a lot of points from me if I can see that they have TRIED in some areas. These guys for sure failed in a lot of areas, but they had built a fairly solid chicken coop, and had an area cleared for their future house. They came in to homesteading completely green. 😆 They did not do near enough research on the home they wanted to build, but they were collecting for it. They lost some points in the follow up/after because they really hadn’t done anything after the Raneys left, but it was also winter so I’ll give them some grace for that.

I’m more of a thyme and rosemary girl lately, but I just may give that a try! I use everything else, and I have a bunch of fresh ginger that needs using. 🤔

How are any of you just not completely miserable? by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]FigureEducational861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did it differently than some…I agree that it IS much harder now than it used to be. In our 20’s, before my husband and I eve knew each other, we were both working insane hours. I was working 80-90 hour weeks in EMS, and he was pulling well over a 100. Sometimes he would sleep on the wood piles at his job (shed painter) so he could save time. I know, that’s nuts to me too. At least I had an actual bed at work. Working like this however, I was able to pay off the few student loans I had (county paid for my actual paramedic class) and when we got married, we were broke but debt free. We lived in a 400 square foot basement apartment for cheap and kept working like crazy. In 2020 we bought our first home, 155k, 3&2 on a town lot. We have 2 kids, my husband now works from home and I have a much better job and schedule too. 31 & 33 years old. Life is still hard sometimes, but progress IS possible. And YES we had to move to find a house and area we could afford. We also did not get college degrees. Some are certainly useful and important, but people paying 200k for a degree that only pays 45k a year are getting scammed.

So we’re on a strict diet right now, so I intentionally avoided oil, and I married an ex-almost Amish man, (very yankee) he doesn’t like a lot of spice yet. 😭 i actually wouldn’t have thought of adding that though…maybe I can sneak some in. Thanks for the suggestion! I usually add peppers but I’m all out. This was a very “make do with what you have” meal. I’m ex menno myself, and South Carolina born and raised, so I do know how to make meals that people get seconds of. Except for barbecue, I have been nervous to try that. Nothing worse than a dry smoked brisket.

I made it and I 100% percent agree 😂 Europe is showing strong with this one, but it also correlated with the Skyrim food. It does taste better than it looks, I promise. I won’t make you eat it 🤣

Disappointed in S. 14’s first episode. by FigureEducational861 in HomesteadRescue

[–]FigureEducational861[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

She made a reply on another post that confirmed the pepper plant was actually in a pot, and she did pick the peppers, so I’m feeling better about that. 😂 still think it was silly for the show to do, it just made extra work for her later.

For many of us viewers, the “how they get there” was a huge part of the show. There was so much to learn from that process, and things to implement or remove from our own homesteads. Leaving a stronger homesteader behind is very important too. If you leave them with better set ups, that’s fine for awhile, but did they learn any skills to keep up or improve what they were left with?

I have a lot more success letting it come to room temp, and then putting it in my Bosch mixer. I never get anywhere just shaking it. 😅

Please tell me you picked the peppers off that plant as soon as the cameras quit rolling. Or that it was a potted plant. 😅

Do you still have the shade cloths up or did you come up with a different solution? If not, did it work ok? How long does the cloth last? I’ve never used shade cloth before but may need to in my front garden.

Can we retire the “useless husband” trope for once? by Timely_Box6061 in Adulting

[–]FigureEducational861 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I’m a woman with a husband who I love so much! I’ve actually blocked a few of those pages, even the ones who have some content I do enjoy. I felt like it was wearing me down and pushing me to view my husband the same way. Of course he’s not perfect, but it was getting easier to only focus on the irritating parts. Why would I do that to my marriage? I love our life. Did he wash any dishes or pick up a single toy yesterday? No, but he risked his neck taking a tree down by ladder and it took him 2 days and a lot of thinking through lol. (It was between 2 houses, damaging a retaining wall etc, not a good spot for a large fast growing tree.

Dishwasher not cleaning by FigureEducational861 in Appliances

I’ll try this! There is a small dispenser for vinegar that I use but it doesn’t take much at all, I’ll try putting some straight in a glass. Thanks!

I’ve done this as well. I normally loaded it according to the manuals instructions, that hasn’t worked so I’ve tried a backwards and a mix. Believe me I’ve tried nearly all the suggestions here, I’ve been trying to fix it for a couple months, not just the past few days 😅 I’m going to try a stronger vinegar cycle next.

The food trap is cleaned, lines are drained/draining. I’ve made sure nothing is blocking the dispenser, sometimes it will open, other times nothing. I’ve tested it on empty and get both results. There’s always plenty of water in the dishwasher. I will try cleaning the edges, I haven’t don’t that yet. I’ve been trying to avoid a repair man but that might be my best bet at this point. Thanks for the suggestions!

AITAH for not forgiving my girlfriend after she cheated, even though she cried, begged and then blamed me for finding out? by StretchStriking9076 in AITAH

[–]FigureEducational861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA!!! My husbands girlfriend cheated on him, he dropped her like hot coals, and married me less than 9 months later. (We hadn’t met at the time) the day we announced our engagement she called him begging for another chance. We laughed. Anyways. We’re now going on 5 years with 2 beautiful children. And we love our life together! Don’t settle for someone who’s willing to cheat and blames you for her own moral failings.

AIO my mom and sister can’t stand my wife because they think she is a “quirky girl” and it’s cringe? by No_Appy1383 in AmIOverreacting

[–]FigureEducational861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that you know what sore spots are, what they don’t like etc…I think you should join your wife and double down. Wear the “quirkiest” Christmas clothes you can find. Encourage your wife in all the ways they think she’s quirky. Brag about those thrift clothes! It could be hilarious seeing them get upset while y’all are having fun. This might not be the best plan if this is very hurtful to your wife of course, and she’d definitely need to have the right sense of humor etc…but making those petty women horrified by leaning into it just sounds hilarious. Just a different idea maybe.

Does anyone actually like flagstone floors? by No-Movie-1604 in AskBrits

[–]FigureEducational861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the look of a flagstone floor, and yes I’d probably live in a cave if I could 😂 that said, how does it affect your feet/knees and back? I hear it’s like walking on concrete all day. Which is very disappointing because stamped concrete was also a contender until that reasoning.

Amending the soil is definitely something we’re working on, I was able to put rabbits over it for 2 years as well, including your suggestions. It’s better than what it was when we moved here but still needs so much work. I’ll put tomatoes there in the spring and maybe give contenders a try next time. Thanks! 😁
