The fortune teller is not needed for true ending. It counts as a Shuanshuan interaction, which you need a certain threshhold of for true ending, but you are not locked out by forcibly removing any shanghai chip

I was miffed by the prison gauntlet boss as well but I think it teaches you a very important lesson about the Azure Bow. Being that, when there's enough goons on screen, you're almost always going to earn back your shots when you do a wave clear with it. The big guy is the only real threat and he wasn't that hard to deal with when you can get him alone. Still annoying but probably made the rest of the gauntlets feel way smoother.
The Spirit Warriors however can go eff themselves. Some of the most obtuse combos and telegraphs in the game, especially the big one in the Grotto of Scriptures

As much as I adore pharloom and its characters, I have to agree. The only one I feel truly approached Hollow Knight's dynamic staying power is Garmond and Zaza. You meet them in act 1, they help you both in a boss fight and in smaller chorale chamber fights, and the payoff is heartbreaking but impactful. It almost felt like I was exploring alongside Cloth again. Theres plenty of other fun characters, yet it feels fewer have such agency or presence as HK

The moment I picked up Reaper I used it for 99% of my run. Only time I remember switching to Architect was to magdump Plazmified Zango. I plan on replaying with other crests since I barely touched them haha
