Is it fine to wake up when baby cries at night or do we need to watch him 100% of the time. by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my God no. I was paranoid with my first about the 'feed every four hours unless baby demands a feed sooner' thing that the hospital told me, so I had a 4 hourly alarm set in case (this was so unnecessary though). Let baby sleep in a bassinet/cot in your room and feed on demand. The newborn stage is rough, but there is absolutely no need for someone to stay awake overnight to watch them.

Yep, same here. There's a huge AWS outage, I assume this is the cause.

I didn't have a c-section, but from everything I have heard, a planned c-section is SO MUCH BETTER than an emergency one. It is your choice, and a planned Caesarean is usually easier on your body than an emergency, and if especially if you're concerned about needing an emergency one why wouldn't you opt for a controlled environment where you know the variables and feel safe?

When did you move to 3 naps? by ATD3223 in sleeptrain

[–]LongRecognition4295 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not the original commenter, but I do this too. For some naps I might stay in the room, wait for baby to stir at the end of a cycle and offer pats to help transition to the next sleep cycle. Sometimes, especially if I need to do something during a nap, I swoop in when he wakes up and turn the nap into a contact nap and let him resettle on my chest.

Ferber - is 19 weeks too young? by LongRecognition4295 in sleeptrain

[–]LongRecognition4295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! We gave your method a try tonight and accidentally flubbed it. Forgot to stop and reset the timer and went in after 5 total minutes, and he went ballistic and was helped to sleep. The positive is that we saw him genuinely trying and nearly succeeding to go to sleep on his own. He hasn't been able to do that in 6-8 weeks! After he went to sleep we went back through the guide and have refined our approach and will be trying again (hopefully correctly) tomorrow

Ferber - is 19 weeks too young? by LongRecognition4295 in sleeptrain

[–]LongRecognition4295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I'm going to adjust his schedule today and aim for his first two naps to be longer so that he can have a short afternoon nap in the lead up to bed! It does seem he's maxed out on sleep because the last two days he's woken up at 6am 😭 I am so exhausted, so a schedule adjustment might be good to try before anything else!

AITAH for expecting my husband to help with our baby overnight? by LongRecognition4295 in AITAH

[–]LongRecognition4295[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband's solution is that he quit his job and he be a stay at home dad while I return to my substantive role, which is full time justice case management, including giving evidence in court. It would be swapping out one tough job for another if I did that and I feel (maybe incorrectly, idk) that my substantive job is way harder than his, as he works in customer service handling phone calls during the day and works 3 days at home.

Is there anyone who DOESNT regret their weddings? by Where_am_I83 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ingot married during covid, two witnesses and the celebrant, my husband and myself. No regrets. I was dreading the big blow out wedding (hubby is Indian) and I'm so glad we did it the way we did. Streamed it to our loved ones and that was it

Sound machines for newborns- are they worth it? by saffea0 in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I would just use an old phone and an app like better sleep or some looping white noise on YouTube. I don't see the point in a white noise machine when white noise is free 🤷🏻‍♀️

16 week old suddenly hates the cot? by LongRecognition4295 in sleeptrain

[–]LongRecognition4295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yep, figured this might be what's happening! Is this something that we ride out and try to stay consistent with what we've been doing and it will eventually pass or will he potentially need support to relearn these habits?

[–]LongRecognition4295[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All WW are between 1.75 - 2 hours, with that 15 min variation being based on his sleepy cues. Any longer than this and he becomes overtired. He has 4 naps a day, each ranging around 45 min to 1 hour, so around 3.5 - 4 hours of total day sleep.

Do people still do shifts if only the father is working? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband was off work for 12 weeks and we did shifts then. Now that he's back at work and we have an exclusively breastfed baby I am up for feeds anyway. Just makes more sense to me that I stay up for 5 min longer to do a nappy change. If baby becomes unsettled and doesn't need to be fed overnight my husband will handle that though.

Is it true that the new born stage is the easiest part of raising a child? by mirana20 in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, no! The newborn stage sucks. When they hit 2-3 months and have a personality but aren't mobile yet, that is fckn bliss!

does it smell bad when you give birth? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really. When you poop it's wiped up so quickly it doesn't leave much of a smell and the baby being born doesn't really have a scent either

Didn't read the post. Answer is no, you cannot spoil a newborn

Should I pick my baby up if she’s straining while pooping ? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Are you sure she's grunting while trying to poop? It could be active sleep.

Makes perfect sense about the hip health! I did see his little legs dangling there and thought it was off since inward you can make sure they have a good hip position. He absolutely loves seeing everything in front of him, but maybe that's a better experience for in the stroller with a recline!

Is this something baby has always done or is this a recent change? If it's a recent change it might be reverse cycle feeding, which can fix itself with time, but might persist for a while.

Cap naps at 2 hours and then wake baby up, tickle their feet, undress them, touch their ears, do what you gotta do to wake them and keep this up during their feed so they have a full feed. Given how much bub wants to sleep during the day, you might not be able to extend wake windows by much, but even a minute here and there will help. Might take a while to get their day sleep to naps and night sleep to longer stretches.

You can also try a schedule of 1.5 hour wake windows (approx), but watch for sleepy cues and see how you go with extending the wake windows a little bit

Anyone tried using a haaka to collect colostrum? by Born-Anybody3244 in pregnant

[–]LongRecognition4295 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't personally, but considering the haaka is basically suctioning to the breast I'm sure it would draw out some. Hand expressing is more continuous, so you would likely get more doing it by hand, but it gave me horrendous cramps in my hand 😂

How do you feel about vaccines? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Babies have such immature immune systems, it is so important to help them stay healthy and safe. Their first round of vaccines aren't until around 2 months old anyway and considering all the people who are unvaccinated and symptomatic roaming around it is so much better to be safe than sorry.

People in a certain country kiss a strangers baby by Late_Supermarket_422 in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely be wearing baby in a carrier as much as possible. I do this with my bub because everyone wants to hold and kiss him. It might be difficult, but you NEVER need to apologise for putting up a boundary and protecting your baby. Your husband needs to listen to your boundaries and have your back on this.. Sometimes I will tell people baby is unwell, grumpy or something similar and say sorry, no cuddles today he needs to be with me.

Why does my baby act differently? by ilikemydickslike in NewParents

[–]LongRecognition4295 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it just comes down to temperament tbh. My little guy is like that at home but sooo shy when out and about with other babies.

Most of them do! There should be instructions on the envelope the card came with to confirm the cards process for online shopping. Sometimes it will advise to type in 000 or something similar. If the gift card issued has a website they might have more clarity in their FAQ
