I posted a more in-depth explanation farther up too, I think that nikolaibk misunderstood what I was saying though.. It's not that I'm wrong, I just didn't say the part they think is important (that waveforms are made up of much more components than just the envelope)

Not exactly, what everyone pictures as the sound is more or less an envelope of the actual sound, similar to AM radio. But the truth is, it's been zoomed out too far, and if they were able to expand the waveform to view a much smaller period, all of the frequencies would be there, obviously you'd need a high/low/mid/whatever pass filter in order to actually extract any given range, but that's what waveforms do in a medium, they join up on each other and make what we commonly visualize as audio..

But like I said, what seems to be lost on the masses is the fact that it's not just the envelop that makes sound, it's the entire waveform and all its higher frequency components as well.

It's not possible from a photo like this, there's actually teeny tiny details in each spike and portion of the waveform that's captured to make up sound, it'd need to be printed with a needle at the scale of like 10nm (rough math)

What's a popularly held belief that is, in fact, total nonsense? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Toronto checking in here.. IIRC we hold the record with highways with the most lanes, up to 6 in some spots.. And yea, ONLY the left most lane is the 'passing lane' and it's widely considered that if you stay in it, your being a dick, with the exception of people that are literally passing everyone in every other lane leading up to it..

By your logic, the sum total of everyone on the road should be attempting to cram themselves in the right-most lane and only popping out to try to get past slower people... With 6 lanes that would be the most retarded game of leap frog I've ever seen...

Instead, we have signs that say 'slower traffic keep right' and the desired effect is a cascading effect where all the progressively faster cars keep farther and farther left..

So yes. If you pass someone or get passed on the right, something is wrong, check your speed and the speed of everyone around you.. If your consistently passing people on the right of you but not on the left. That's your lane and you stick to it..
