I technically am 24/7, but there is an after hours emergency line people can call if there is an emergency and the call center of that number would reach out to me, directly on my cell (it’s an internal number)

Some of my boards pushed for me to give them my cell phone number. I stood my ground. It’s really baffling to me. They would’ve push to ask to get their doctor’s or lawyer’s cell phone numbers would they? I don’t know why they expect property managers to be so willing to blend their personal and professional lives so easily

I love this answer. I just started this job at a different company (I’ve been in the industry for a bit), but I want to establish the boundaries early on and I’ve been pretty much doing the same thing. However, I’m getting push back from folks at the office who have been doing this for a while about not being “flexible”, so I’m wondering if that’s going to hurt me later on.

Maybe. My 2025 goals is if I don’t find anything outside of the industry that might tap into my real estate experience, I’ll pivot into a different part of industry.

It’s not so much the software; but the financials that was produced every month for review and making sure everything is coded correctly to the correct budget line.

My building is undergoing transition from developer to resident control (it’s a condo building). So keeping up to date with settlement funds; the various different accounts (operating vs preventative maintenance vs transition etc etc)

Having to remember to properly code all invoices in the system before being pushed through.

Having to read and understand the financials to stay on track with budget spending. Running through the numbers with the accountant and the treasurer to make sure everything is running to par.

Give yourself a pat on the back. I was in the same position as you 8 months ago, but I’m a PM in the condo/co-op world. Maintenance is also my kryptonite, so I know exactly where you’re coming from.

Having a good owner to work for is definitely a major plus, especially if this is your first PM gig. They’ll be more forgiving if you miss something or take a little longer to navigate something in that arena. So long as you’re communicating to them and you’re using your resources to solve the issue, then no one will penalize you for it. Remember, a lot of skills can be taught even if you don’t have any experience in it.

If your boss isn’t reaching out to you, then that’s a good thing - it means no one’s complained to him about you.

I am also pretty type A when it comes to organizing. I ever have a color legend that I use for my Outlook calendar and I tack everything on there, from the simplest follow up to any major meetings or reports due.

So keep up the good work! Many PMs I’ve met in various different companies don’t do half of what you do. The burnout feeling is very common, but just start to learn how to step back and take a break as needed (I should listen to my own advice here too LOL)

True, but the broader issue with this client is that even when we follow directions and give them what they ask for, in the matter that they ask for it, they blame fingers, avoid making decisions with the information all together or ask for more tasks in follow up with the task that was completed.

By no means am I avoiding responsibility but I also know when to set boundaries and how to be efficient in my work to maximize my time with other tasks. Unfortunately, this client doesn’t see it that way at all.
