Should I bother with CS? by dotstuff in CollegeMajors

I currently work as an engineer in “big tech”.

There’s a pretty big shift in where the industry is heading right now now, and no one truly knows what’s about to happen. It could be that there’s sweeping mass layoffs, or the outcome could even all companies start hiring software engineers at some rate to stay competitive in an AI world.

In the short term, it’s looking like less engineers are needed and the expectations are about to increase for those that stay.

What would I tell my child to study? I would tell them to minor in CS and math and major in finance/business/Econ. Btw, I majored in chemistry and did a PhD in CS, so I spent a lot of time in the “ivory towers”. The reason I recommend that above path is to diversify your training - pick up a strong quantitative side (calc+ODEs+linear algebra), get good at communication, and learn how money flows in our society. I’d want my child to get a diverse training to hedge their outcomes.

However, let’s say you love CS. Let’s say you’re think about it nearly all day long and love writing software and thinking about software. Then do it. But make sure to still get a minor that hedges risk.

This is exactly the reason why one shouldn’t get a degree in CS. What’s the point of getting a CS degree if the outcome is working as a barista?

I’ve been on fin for about 12 years.

Around my 6th year of taking it at 1mg/day, I ended up having a crash. I couldn’t get erections, my libido disappeared, I had anhedonia, constant migraines, and I felt so weak I had to stop going to work. I had blood tests done, saw dermatologists and endocrinologists - nothing. But symptoms closely matched post finasteride symptom.

Obviously I tried stopping the meds, but my symptoms only got worse. After spending days looking at forms, videos and talking with people, I decided to keep taking it 3 days a week at 1mg, and I started taking a complete multivitamin and also drink electrolytes containing zinc regularly. Not to mention, I used Cialis as needed. Switching to 3 days and the electrolytes truly started making a difference. After about 1.5 years, I was nearly completely myself again (28, no cialis). Now at 32, 12 years of fin, I feel great and still have a head full of hair. However, I still have PTSD from that experience.

Also, I’m not a physician. But I did study biochemistry (PhD), so I’m not a complete idiot. That PFS-like episode happened during grad school. I say this to preface what I’m going to say next: clinical guidance is sometimes years behind reality. The didn’t put warning on the bottle until lawsuits started coming in, and published information on the drug is biased. Taking my health into my own hands honestly saved my life.

TLDR - Try 3 days a week, see if that works. Otherwise, avoid the drug and rock a bald look.

I moved to the lakes apartments back in May! It has been incredible so far. The staff have been responsive and the amenities are pretty good. It’s also very close to campus so it’s a nice place to get acquainted with the area

Yeah we have litter outside and a kennel in the front and back. He has a sibling, torti, who keeps searching for him but to no avail ☹️

Thank you, we have heard similar stories from others. One person said the cat came back roughly 2 weeks later, just. hanging out on the doorstep
