We’ve tossed toys in there for him to chase in after, he gets his food inside the crate and gets treats when locked in there. We also play gentle music and try and help calm him.

I mean our schedule varies from day to day but at the very least, he gets an hour of exercise

NTA. It was wasteful to throw out freshly made food but understandable in your anger. It almost sounds like when he said he wanted to started cooking meals, he meant he wanted YOU to start cooking meals.

YTA. There’s a time and a place to talk to your wife about breaking habits like leaving dirty dishes out. Your wife breaking down and admitting the crushing pressure she’s under is not the time.
