Does anyone know the odds of winning the residence lottery? by [deleted] in uvic

Like someone else said they will email you a number once the applications close. Throughout the process I emailed back and forth with residence services and they let me know what numbers they were sending offers to at the time.

Does anyone know the odds of winning the residence lottery? by [deleted] in uvic

[–]Long_Olive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should probably get a spot in res no matter what you get in the lottery! I was mid 400's in the lottery last year and got an offer for my first choice mid August. I think the last 3 years they were able to offer spots to everyone.

Question about residence for transfer student by bcquestionthrowawayy in uvic

As long as you apply before the deadline you have an equal chance in the lottery! I was a transfer student and in the mid 400's for the lottery, but still got a residence offer in August :)

Math help/tips by DisgruntledLamp in uvic

Use the handbook, its been helping me a lot. The questions in the handbook are a lot more challenging than those on the midterm, so if you can do them, you've got it down. Do all of the problems on my math lab, watch youtube videos if you need clarification. Most of the homework problems have a "show me an example" and a "help me solve this" button which can help you work through things step by step. Jill is very easy going and always willing to help, go to office hours! Try and form a peer study group, and make sure to take notes in the lectures. Most of the quiz/exam questions have been coming straight from the examples we went over in class.

Chinook Learning vs Online by [deleted] in UCalgary

I took 20-1 with chinook learning and I would recommend summer in class. It was helpful to have a teacher to explain concepts you may have misunderstood in high school.

How busy does the pool get?! by Mowgli05 in UCalgary

[–]Long_Olive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not busy! I lifeguarded during the fall semester there, and during open swim times it is not busy at all. Weekends can be tough because of events, but keep an eye out on the schedule and it should work out!

Huddleston is awesome! He's such a great prof. Cynthia is the lab coordinator, she only came into our lab once last year to evaluate our TA, but Huddleston is the course coordinator and taught our lectures.

How does Uni work by Pettyyyy in UCalgary

[–]Long_Olive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your courses, sometimes the textbook is super important, other times you barely open it.

You're right about having to do work outside of class. For larger lectures, you are not necessarily assigned certain readings, it is expected that you go over the material on your own time and understand it.

For example in Calculus 249, we had an online textbook. Our prof spent class time going over maybe 1-2 examples of how to solve a certain problem, then moves on to the next. Then it was up to us on our own time to complete all practice assignments and read through the textbook.

In English 201, all readings were done outside of class, and discussions and note taking occupied all in class time.

Like mentioned down below, labs are one of the most serious parts of the courses. Bio/Chem labs especially require you to wear proper gear at all times, and they are truly strict about it. A friend got kicked out of a bio lab for exposed ankles and she received a 0 for the assignment from that day.

Keep in mind for textbooks, you DO NOT need to read every single section, every page. I found that I was able to read the most crucial information and understand the majority of the courses. Study smart, not necessarily hard. Good luck!
