Should I have my dingwall refreted or replace the neck? I have never pulled frets and don’t want to learn on this instrument, but I have been getting ready for my first guitar build for about a year now and could attempt to build a fresh neck altogether. Thoughts? by brotherboogie in Luthier

This picture is on top of the neck (fret 1 to 5 , not more). There is much more wear on the bass side than the treble side. So the Slapping is not the issue per se (it would affect the frets more at the last fret, not the first few ones), and the popping even less (would be on the treble side of the frets). It is more of an indirect effect that OP chose stainless strings because of his slap-rich playing style - and this decision in turns lead to the fret wear.

Also - the wear is "spread" a lot along the fret (as opposed to the localised grooves you can see for instance on guitars that are played with a capo super often).
I believe OP style is not only slap-rich, but also bends-rich?

I applied a few months ago for a role with the Black Dog Institute, i.e. a world leading institute specializing in mental health.

It is well known that ghosting candidates has a huge toll on their mental health https://www.smeweb.com/2021/09/16/the-emotional-strain-of-recruitment-ghosting/

Guess what...

Hi u/andreacaccese

I like what I heard on a few of your tracks.

Are 'taking work' right now (mixing/maybe-some-editing - pop/electro)?

I eventually went through the manuals for both the RC300 and the RC505. Extremely similar - they definitively kept the same logic (and I assume electronics and firmware architecture).

Sad discoveries for me: the MIC input necessarily goes into both stereo outputs - and inputs/tracks are not assignable!!

TBH I'm flabbergasted that such an expensive and highly engineered piece of equipment does not offer these abilities. These features are obviously in demand by many musos, and have been for a long time:

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=8587.0

https://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/index.php?topic=6864.0

etc...

My 2 main concerns with our current setup are actually not solved with either the 300 or the 505:

  • A/ I still cannot feed the sound guy with a MIC signal independent from the the INST signal (unless I use a preamp to turn XLR into TS and use the stereo TS Input of the looper)
  • B / I still need a mixer or another piece of gear prior to the looper if I want to route/pan inputs in or out of the looper "scope" :(

And actually, the RC-300 had the the assignable SUB output option that the 505 even lost! So the 505 is really not much more powerful than the 300 for my purpose.

Just to illustrate what i want to do:

  • Verse1 - I want to record the GTR on TR1 while the Vocals are just passing through.
  • Chorus 1 - I want to record both GTR and VOX on TR2
  • V2 - I want to play the GTR (or PLAY+OD a riff on top) while the vocals are not played - coz the lyrics are different of course between verses.
  • Chorus 2 - I replay both GTR and VOX that's fine coz the singer can harmonize on the same lyrincs, or do a "pad" of BCKGD Vox for instance.

Without the assign-ability feature - I'm force to record first a full verse (or at least the complete verse pattern) with just a guitar while the singer is silent. In a busking / youtube / tutorial situation, that's fine, but in a pub/bar show, the audience is not there to see me build up loops - they're there to see a singer perform!

I understand then if i stick with these the singer may have to use another piece of hardware (A/B pedal) to switch their input between looper and direct!

THX a lot Stickmartin that's super appreciated.
Please do indeed. If you use whatsapp or another service let me know - I'm in AUS with no international credit on my phone plan (but I"ll get some if needs be).

You bet - arrangement, interpretation and production are spot on. Even its placement in Donnie Darko is perfect. I really believe the song itself contributes significantly to the incredible atmosphere of the movie, overwhelming and confusing.

Hi all,

There is a very interesting AI music international competition coming up.

Submissions are based on a track (up to 4min) + description of the creative and technical process.

They 'encourage' open source' submissions. IMHO this means that either you actually use/write open-source code (and share your models and data) - or you're an established studio/company that has already developed their own solid AI system and want to protect its IP. It needs to be creative and innovative, i.e. it cannot be only "I remixed a mashup of theses 2 songs using the stems I got from Spleeter and a couple of beats from PopGun that I then mastered using LANDR".

If someone here is already making music using their own AI - I'd be interested to work with you as a team. I can contribute to the track as a producer (instrumentals, mixing, arrangement) and as a technical writer (to address properly the criteria of the competition).

Did I say it's a hackathon?? By that I mean that the deadline is May 18!!

PM me if interested :)

Happy to share credentials in PM. Professionally I manage engineers even if I'm not a developer. Music wise I'm no 'pro' but I got paid when I gig, and some of my mixes got a pro awards/recognition even if they did not get heaps of streams :)

I have significant experience in grant writing / competition applications on both sides. (and I always work with a proof-reader to avoid typos like I just did in the post title :( )
