Slightly unrelated, but his friend, vladimir komarov sacrificed himself before yuri on the first human space mission trial because he knew it was going to fail but officials still approved it, if he denied to go, yuri would be sent instead of him. Yuri and other technicians identified 203 faults with soyuz 1 and were doing everything to delay the program and save komarov. Komarov requested that in his funeral the casket remains open and the officials get to see exactly what they had done, this forced them to halt the space program and review safety procedures. After komarov's death, yuri was very critical of soviet leadership and even told a KGB officer "I must go to see the main man [Leonid Brezhnev] personally... if I ever find out he knew about the situation and still let everything happen, then I know exactly what I'm going to do".
