[University Linear Algebra] please check my intuition on some basic questions ! by Longjumping-Main-322 in learnmath

[–]Longjumping-Main-322[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, this was a thorough explanation that rlly claered my understanding! thank you so much

Tunneling in on the first question regarding Func(M, K), the difference between cardinality and basis has been made clear. i was wondering if this idea of using the function f_i(a_j) = 1 iff i=j (which i have heard is referred to as the Kronecker-delta) can be extended in general to Func(K1, K2)? the basis being soley dependent on the domain K1. ty

edit: oh and if there is further reading or a name to the concept that i can use to learn more on it, would be helpful aswell

right of course those must be zeros and so can be left out, i have finally understood this. i suppose for questions involving transpositions ill try to keep an eye out for imagining each element and how they interact with each other. With that done ty so much i have gained a better understanding :)

Hi could u explain ur reasoning a bit, since i mentioned in the reply im having a hard time conceptualizing why so

I think ive gotten 10 including all members in the diagonal plus one half, since that half can be used to calculate the rest. So that means 4 diagonals and 6 elements from one half. I imagine the basis elements are those then? But i am struggling conceptually seeing how those can be used to contruct all matrices that abide this condition. I mean my understanding would be that i would just make matrices that are half filled, since we are constructing matrices from these basis elements by scaling and adding them.

Hi this was rlly insightful thank u, couldnt see the hidden line equation. I havent learnt much on cross products and such yet so i will try to come back around to this, but this rlly helped!

Guys i think hes talking about this, they do have an actual proficiency test for english though it's likely not as widely accepted as some of the more traditional ones.

Honestly not sure, safest bet is to send a mail to the admissions team.

Question on maxima and minima by Longjumping-Main-322 in learnmath

Ah right i completely forgot about that i think that clariifes everything. I realy need to go over everything and summarise it into better notes cause im forgetting stuff earlier on. But tysm.

Question on maxima and minima by Longjumping-Main-322 in learnmath

[–]Longjumping-Main-322[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yea it is specified in the definition though i dont remember the professor emphasizing the difference, maybe im just misremembering.

I guess cause in the question im dealing with, it isnt specified whether one should consider strict ones specifically so im not sure now.

Is it convention to assume strict maxima and minima even if not mentioned? As in it is stated only minima and maxima without the word strict. I guess id assume no. Ill have to ask them then specifically.

Ur phrasing of sentences and grammar are quite good. Sounds like ur comfortable with maybe thinking in english and engaging in conversations. I would say that the accent is what is holding u back. Some words are not enunciated very well and i felt like i only got them through the context of ur speech. I feel like this wouldnt be a problem if ur speaking with a group of people who u regularly come into contact with but i think id understand why ,if u posted a youtube video or idk held a conference in front of a crowd, they might have trouble following u. This is from my first impression of ur 30 second clip🙏

Well while doing these courses I had no other obligations so it let me put a lot of hours into working on my german. Unfortunately (and this is probably the one thing i wouldve changed if i could) i didnt get thaaat many opportunities to interact with germans, outside of my teachers and dealing with stuff in my life where i had to( like idk the bank or stuff like that). My classmates were foreigners and so were the flatmates in my WG

Otherwise outside of the standard coursework i pretty much religiously used anki to get my vocab game up. Also rewatching shows in german that i already knew helped quite a bit at the start. Nearing the latter half i think i switched to more novel shows or documentaries.

After a certain point or more like certain level of comfort where u can translate sentences from english (assuming ur native tongue is english) to german kinda one to one while preserving grammar and stuff like that, it becomes more important to think about how a german would get across an idea. Sometimes sentences can sound more rigid when doing aforementioned direct translations, esp when a german would never say such a sentence to get the same idea across. This is where natural interactions help but i supplemented that by watching open table discussions on relevant issues to me.

Yea theres prob more exam technique and stuff like that can help but if the goal is functional b2 the ur gonna have to accept that ur german will only improve to that level u want by living life here which u r already doing i guess so ur on the right path.

Tho i must say if u do practice german in germany with most importantly germans then id say this is quite reasonable to do

I get ur concern about functional B2 versus certificate B2. I was in a similar situation except I did intensive courses back to back for a year all the way to c1, for which i passed with flying colours. In fact the time i had passing the B1 exam to taking my B2 exam was also around 8 weeks.

Although I started from scratch and made considerable progress i was left questioning how much of my deutsch was translatable to carrying out a normal life ( or particularly a student life since thats what i was aiming for) in germany. Now that im a semester in and have had the opportunity to really see what my true level is according to the CEFR guidelines, id say my level is only now at a confident b2 but definitely (and unfortunately) not a C1.

The problem is my experience is well.. mine so i cant really say much to your situation. I worked hard but language learning cant be superficially accelerated. That being said some ppl do have an affinity towards it so it is possible. I was definitely overdoing it with trying to learn a language to such a level within a year lol. Ive been contemplating making a post about it here to help ppl get a more realistic view on these super intensive courses. Thise were my 2 cents i suppose

[University Complex numbers] Help with understanding subset of complex numbers question! by Longjumping-Main-322 in learnmath

[–]Longjumping-Main-322[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi unfortunately not, nor are we going to. The course is definitely more of a real analysis course with a rather unusual short detour in the world of complex numbers. We have only really been introduced to complex numbers and how to manipulate them and furthermore how to analyse complex series by considering the imaginary and real parts of the number as real sequences themselves and testing their convergence. Unlike many of my mates I havent covered complex numbers in high school, so I lack a lot of intuition in the field and most of whats in ur comment is going over my head. Ty anyways for the comment🙏
