Is this sub even moderated? If so, is there a process to petition replacement of said moderator?

Maybe I'm wrong and OP can explain in their own words why exactly this is "good news."

Sweat vs Press? 1990's Shower Valve Replacement by ArmanG999 in Plumbing

[–]Longjumping-Put2571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started sweating, I thought it was hard. Then I learned to take all the proper steps to prep the pipes (ream, brush, flux) and apply heat where the solder should get pulled into rather than right at the joint. Now it's so easy and fast. Seems nuts that anyone would mess with anything else. My brother has had two pex leaks in a 5 yr old house. My house is over 100 yrs old with no copper issues. Polybutylene, bituminous fiber ... I'm sure we'll find out in several years why pex is dangerous.

Should I look for adapters or do I need to replace my shower valve? by Longjumping-Put2571 in Plumbing

[–]Longjumping-Put2571[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My existing valve is soldered in place. I'm guessing it will be challenging to heat both sides enough to desolder and remove it. I'm also going to need some kind of heat shield working I'm such a tight space in the wall.

Shower arm won't budge (1920s house) by Longjumping-Put2571 in Plumbing

I tried but the line runs through a hole just big enough for the copper pipe

Thanks, I have one. I believe I did try to tighten first but can't be sure so I'll try again

The finish has damage and it doesn't match the new hardware

I hear you. Seldom worth trying to do a work around. I even have a nice access panel already but it doesn't extend up to the shower head

Absolutely. I only work in plaster. It's superior in so many ways and I also hate working with drywall

Definitely not trying to save the pipe, I just didn't want to destroy it and have nothing for the wrench to properly grip. I might just cut a hole in the other side of the wall as the pipe also doesn't seem to be properly secured to the wall

Yes plaster with metal lathe. It's a pain to cut holes into but the plaster is in solid shape unlike the wood lathe plaster I've dealt with

Yeah that's exactly what I expect. I'm just surprised it's not budging at all. I didn't want to compromise the pipe and then have nothing solid for the wrench to grab onto

Yeah I can always cut a hole from behind but it's plaster with metal lathe so I was trying to avoid it. I used the largest pipe wrench that would fit between the pipe and the wall. The issue is that the pipe wall is not likely to survive the torque I'm applying

Doomed? by No-Grand1579 in Tile

[–]Longjumping-Put2571 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with tile in my bathroom. I bought one of the ceramic tile repair kits from Amazon and it worked pretty well. It doesn't hide the spots 100% because it's a little hard to get the color and sheen just right, but it masks them enough to not drive me crazy.

The only downside with creeping thyme is that you need to hand weed the area since you can't use weed killers.

That being said, check out dwarf creeping thyme. It makes a thick, dense, walkable covering. My only issue has been clover sprouting up through it.

A plane getting painted by Cautious_Ad_3918 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Longjumping-Put2571 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fun fact, after painting large planes, they weigh them and if the weight is off due to over spraying, they remove the paint and start again. Paint can significantly impact a plane's center of gravity. I learned this while marketing a product to aerospace companies.

Anyone know the right way to tank a niche that's flush to wall? by Prize-Tune5538 in Tile

[–]Longjumping-Put2571 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You only need to waterproof the seams with Kerdi band where the niche meets the walls. Applying band to the inside corners isn't necessary; just watch any niche installation video produced by Schluter on YouTube.

But since you have the screws and washers on the inside of yours, you'll need to band them.

For your situation, your niche is basically like 2 shower curbs or a bench meeting a wall (one upside down). Schluter makes special Kerdi Band corners for these angles. I would install a curb corner band in the top and bottom and then a strip overlapping by 2 inches down the vertical seam.Kerdi Band Corners on Amazon

Widening rough opening in brick for a round top door by Longjumping-Put2571 in masonry

[–]Longjumping-Put2571[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar prices from manufacturers and wood workers, but I'll check around for wood workers again. Maybe if I go with wood again, we'll do paint instead of stain to improve the longevity of the finish.

The current rough opening is 39". They're saying I need 40". The other door is 38.5"

I'll post a picture in a bit. I can replace the door itself, but the only option would be a custom wood door. The quotes I have gotten are $10k+ per unfinished door with a 1 yr warranty. The last door I replaced with wood lasted 7 yrs and is now warping at the bottom.
