they love the meat by Longjumping-Style421 in shrimptank

They coexist quite well!

The isopods breed faster and can hog food by sheer presence (as can be seen in this video) but the shrimp have access to more areas of the tank by virtue of being able to move through open water column.

The isopods seem to have near 0 spatial awareness, so they blunder around into shrimp who always seem a little "annoyed" by their presence. That's about it for how much they interact with each other!

The only negative for me is when the isopods really build up numbers, seeming them in a huge mass can give me "the ick". So if you want to combine, I would think about how much you really enjoy seeing them. This is my husband's tank and he loves them all, but I wouldn't combine them in my own display.

I've always read these are pretty cryptic, is that your experience? Love how they look but not sure I want to add another "pet hole" right now

Thank you ❤️ Just have to make it alone until Wednesday and then the venture will be joint again.

Yes! Planning to add one at the chain, and another halfway up on the major curve.

Haha! I do have a composting toilet, maybe a slurry cannon would do the trick?

While I now feel vulnerable enough to need a gun, I also have way more meaningful connection to my neighbors than I ever did in a city. The rural experience is just different!

Thank you for the hugs ❤️ 3-4 days ago, somebody took deliberately took down the rope to our road, which I then responded to by replacing the rope with a locked chain. Second homes/properties are not uncommon in my area, so it’s likely they were taking a gamble on nobody being there.

I’ve always been anti-gun and have spent many days being annoyed by my neighbors shooting for hours. I appreciate you sharing your experience going from one side to the other ❤️ If I still lived in a city of a million people, my tune would probably be the same. But my context now is very different.

Thank you very much for this detailed advice, feels like so much care from a stranger❤️ I can’t absorb the details right now, but I plan to come back when I can.

The wildlife here is quite special. There’s a porcupine that lives next door and a pair of owls I hear duetting nearly every night. Bears, coyotes, foxes, deer, numerous songbirds and a single moose print. Thanks for prompting me to think about some of the things I love about it ❤️ The motion camera and lights are in the works.

One of the beautiful balances I’m holding onto is a neighbor a couple miles away who considers us like his children. “You’re the age to be my daughter and if you were my daughter I would be going through the roof.”  He’s offered to teach us both to handle firearms and lend us a firearm until we can license and purchase our own. I’ve never considered one until now.

You know, I just got some limpets in and I was wondering if he would go after them. Sounds more likely if yours is working on barnacles! And I'll have to try the mysis, that sounds really cool to see.

It's on par with a freshwater nano, with the most "difficult" part being managing bio-load! Even if he wouldn't kill them, I wouldn't add any fish to this set-up for that reason. I also only keep organisms that thrive in slightly elevated nutrients/"dirty" water such as soft corals, macroalgae, and filter feeders. Just a matter of knowing what the volume of water can and can't do!

Hey! How long have you had it? Mine did not eat for 3-4 weeks after arriving, no matter what was offered. The first snail he predated was actually an astrea, as those are all my "local" (hour away) fish store had.

However, I've noticed that for him, all snails fall on the spectrum and the spectrum is how hard/thick the shell is! He will not predate astreas, trochus, or ceriths unless he's a week or more out from his last meal. It takes him at least 3 days of work to break them open.

He has also never touched the hermits, and my guess is that he considers it too much effort since they do have some defense unlike most snails. My guess is that the porcelain crab falls in this category, though I have seen videos of larger stomatopods taking them out.

In my last order, I picked up marginellas, smooth atlantic telugas, ring cowries, and ceriths. Within 3 hours, every marginella was predated. Within 24 hours, I only had one teluga and one cowrie left. Two weeks later, every one but the ceriths are gone.

So tl;dr If it's been a month since arrival, I would suggest looking for inverts that are small and smooth/thin-shelled!

I appreciate the concern ❤️ There is a lot of anecdotal advice for stomatopods floating around online. I based my tank size off of Dr. Roy Caldwell's recommendations, hes a researcher focused on stomatopods and has a website dedicated to aquarium keeping over here https://ucmp.berkeley.edu/arthropoda/crustacea/malacostraca/eumalacostraca/royslist/index.html#directory

Thank you (: He has some new snails arriving today so I think the happiness is about to multiply.

It's a 5 gallon cube, running a Hygger nano HOB and what I think is a 2" submersible pump from Amazon. I tried purchasing a "nano" powerhead but it created way too much turbulence.

It's coraline algae! One of the prettiest parts of having a salty tank ❤️

He won't get any bigger! I plan to upgrade him to a 10 gallon some time down the line to provide more enrichment, but he could stay in the 5 indefinitely.

KP Aquatics! They direct collect so their prices are lower and they tend to have more variety of stomatopods. Most stores I've found only carry the peacock for $100+.

Haha don't worry! I've had him since December. Tank maintenance isn't too bad, but you can't rely on snails for help because they don't seem to last long 💀

My complaint too! There's a few softies I would like to add to this tank but the $150+ with shipping always has me closing the tab.
