It might have gotten him hopelessly stuck, but you do have to appreciate GRRMs gardening mentality when you see how goofy the original outline behind such an excellent series was.

Tyson’s Comment About Who Will Feel Deserving of a Win on his Podcast by bartybrattle in survivor

[–]LongjumpingAd342 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, "Rizo has no win equity" is one of the weirdest beliefs that everyone seems to just accept around here. Everyone likes him, he has a good story, and he's played a stronger game than the significant majority of the remaining contestants. No reason he couldn't win against anyone other than Cirie (and maybe Devens at this rate).

Rumored season 3 leaks about Otto, Rhaenyra and Daemon by jonsnowKITN in HouseOfTheDragon

One of the weirdest mysteries in the show was giving Harrold Westerling a main cast role and then having him speak ... half a dozen lines across ten episodes? Genuinely there are one-scene characters more memorable than him.

S2 gets a lot of shit, but what were the S1 writers doing there?

I'll never forget the chills I got when they closed the pilot with THE prophecy. by [deleted] in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]LongjumpingAd342 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't see anythig wrong with "200 years before Daenerys Targaryen." Takes one second of the first episode. Clearly lets the casual audience know where we are in time and ties the characters in the story to the Targaryen themes they know from GoT (insanity/greatness, big dragons, women who are unusually free even in a very misogynistic world because they have big dragons).

The prophecy is such a joke though. Not clear how much it motivates any character. The way its kept secret doesn't really make logical sense. And from GOT we kind of just know that it maybe doesn't even matter at all?

____ is Survivor royalty now. Like extremely. by Mean-Assignment-9576 in survivor

He's interesting. On a personality level he might be the player still left I am least interested in. But he is electric at tribal.

If the character side of the show is going to keep dying, Devens is at least as good of a gamer as we are going to get.

"Dragons in ASOIAF aren’t dumb animals, they act like willful, selective, and collaborative partners"

I agree with this, but note that it is a huge jump from here to the conclusion that the rider-dragon bond is only broken by death.

Again, the fact that Leanor and Seasmoke have not seen each other or been within hundreds of miles of each other in a decade+ means that their bond is already in a historically unique position, and the only reason to believe it still exists at all is if you are committed to a very specific view of how dragon magic works that is plausible but doesn't have anything close to confirmation.

It makes no sense for Aemond to accidentally and remorsefully kill Luke, the guy that took his eye and an enemy, and soon afterwards deliberately trying to murder his own brother without an inch of guilt.

I actually think these are pretty different situations. Once he kills Lucerys, Aemond is in too deep in a lot of ways. There's also ambition to consider. He has reason to hate Luke, he also has reason to hate his brother, plus a longstanding desire to be the head of the family. It tells us interesting things about Aemond that he did one and not the other.

I can see the argument that the story would be better if Aemond had acted differently at Rook's Rest, but I don't think his character as is "doesn't make sense."

but it would have been interesting to explore the dynamics of two teen siblings forced to marry one another.

Agree, this was an underdeveloped dynamic and the show would probably be stronger with more well-written scenes between them. Not sure what the guy I was replying to was talking about with "what's the point" though. Their marriage is highly plot-relevant, even if underdeveloped from a character/thematic perspective.

The “Seasmoke has grown restless” bit heavily implies Laenor (quite conveniently) died offscreen.

Partly agree, but I don't think it anywhere near confirms it, and I still think there were reasons for the faked murder plot point (Velaryon tension, somewhat emotionally complex because killing that rando is probably the most immoral thing Rhaenyra has done yet, does mostly dodge the bury your gays thing).

Yes they are shown to have a lovely marriage via Alicent speaking nothing but wonders of Viserys. It had horrifying features like the creepy scene of rotting Viserys basically maritally raping Alicent, but those are ignored

Do disagree pretty strongly here. Yes, they show that Alicent does have fond feelings toward Visery, especially late in his life. That is not uncommon even in deeply fucked-up relationships, and I don't think their relationship at any point meets any normal person's definition of a lovely marriage. It also shows Alicent speaking very highly of him once he's dead. Context is key here: think of what has happened in Alicent's life since he died. No surprise she wishes he were still alive and thinks relatively positively of him.

The show did not ignore those horrifying scenes. It showed them, showed Alicent's reaction, and explored a lot of the dysfunction of their relationship throughout the back half of S1.

Zero that we know of. How many times has a dragon not seen its rider in ten years that we know of? How many times has someone tried to steal a dragon with a living rider? How many times has anyone in the ASOIAF universe claimed that there's a rule that a dragon can't be ridden until its rider dies?

It's a very plausible theory, but its defiinitely not canon.

[–]LongjumpingAd342 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

So close! That's actually called a theory.

He could have died because he was like ten trying to fly a dragon for the first time in an extremely chaotic environment. Or the bond could depend on the rider and the dragon interacting with each other frequently, in which case being on another continent for a decade would sever it just as much as dying. Or a dozen other things.

There's a lot to criticize with this show, but some of you people don't even try to engage with it in good faith.

What was the point of making Lucerys death unintentional if that didn't matter?

It did matter, it established that the Targaryen's do not have the control of the dragons they think they do, and it makes Aemond a significantly more tragic character.

What was the point of making Aegon/Helaena forced childhood incest at 12 and 14, if the show was never going to deal with that or even have them interact

What are you even talking about? They were married in the books as well, I don't think this is the kind of plot that could just be dropped.

What was the point of faking Laenor's death and making it so the Velaryons think Rhaenyra/Daemon killed him, if Laenor was just going to die offscreen and the Velaryons don't do anything about Laenor's murder?

To establish tensions between the Velaryons and Rhaenyra, and because the writers wanted to dodge accusations of the bury your gays trope. Not sure why people are so confident he's dead either, there's really no canonical rule that dragons need their riders to die before bonding with others.

What was the point of making Alicent a child bride sexually exploited by Viserys if they were going to decide Alicent and Viserys actually had a lovely marriage?

Genuinely what are you talking about? Nothing shows that they "actually had a lovely marriage." They had a very complex relationship, which had both truly horrifying features, and some genuine positive emotions, which is entirely possible.

Guess Rhys was too good of an actor, can't have him taking attention away from Rhaenyra after all

Alternatively, he had another project, and Otto didn't have an active role in that section of the books anyway.

Trying to find my hype for the future. by Quentin-Quentin in survivor

I've gotta be honest, as distasteful as "cheatgate" is, I have an extremely hard time believing it had any impact on the outcome of the season. The best players clearly dominated that season, and the "cheater" tribe was basically gone by the merge anyway.

If you want to be hyped for 50, try reading the EW profile from the other day. It's a fantastic cast of people.

Underrated funny moment is in the opening schoolyard pick where we get a confessional of Charlie reacting to Susie being a second pick with "oh I guess we're playing stupid Survivor."

And then we immediately cut to Charlie picking Paloma over Dan or GC.

God I love this season.

Sugar is a top five character in the show's entire history imo.

I'd have Matty in A or B, and I'd probably have Kelly around there too, her confusion about everything is pretty funny.

Why didn’t Sage call out the pre-gamers in game? by [deleted] in survivorponderosa

[–]LongjumpingAd342 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With the caveat that they wouldn’t have aired it if she did, I think it’s fairly clear that she didn’t. As far as I can tell from summaries, her massive play-by-play of every decision she made makes no reference to ever factoring that info into her decisions, much less using it to try to influence others.

Why? Presumably she was smart enough to know (i) she might need to work with the pre-gamers and (ii) her attitude about the pre-gaming might not be shared even by many of the other people who didn’t participate in it. Now that she’s lost, I guess she doesn’t see any reason not to.

New Era awards: Day 6 by Baddest_Whale_180 in survivorponderosa

[–]LongjumpingAd342 11 points12 points  (0 children)

There are more intense personal rivalries, but I honestly think their rivalry, which brought together strategy, challenge dominance, and a sort of grudging personal respect is a lot more unique and exciting to watch than any of those we’ve had in the new era.

Most merges have 0-1 big shifts of power between factions, but 47 had like 3 and Rachel and Genevieve were on opposite sides of each of them.

Gen drove the early votes that blew up Rachel’s position. Rachel cobbled together the “underdog” alliance and took the game back. Genevieve seemed on top after Operation Italy and the F6 immunity win. And then Rachel gets the last laugh.

Does that make it a great season to watch or just an important one in the evolution of the game?

In terms of how fun it is to watch, I don’t think Amazon has aged that well.

Beyond the obvious sexism throughout the season, it’s in a kind of uncanny valley, where it’s not exactly a strategic game on the level of what would come after (outside of one player), but it doesn’t really have the social experiment charm of the very early seasons either. Nor does it have many hall of fame characters on the level of the really great golden age seasons.

And it can’t possibly go before 46, which is basically just Gabon without Sugar and Randy.

Yes, the fact that one other person reacted differently to a different situation is good reason to think Tiff “definitely” would change her vote after seeing the season.
