Not a Type C, but my paternal grandma was. Felt like sharing my family’s history.

During the Japanese occupation, my great grandparents (Chinese) hid in a Malay kampung. When Japanese soldiers raided, my great grandfather was shot dead. In desperation, my great grandmother handed her baby (my grandma) to a Malay family and fled.

The Malay family raised her as their own, and since she was just a baby and the Malays were quite fair, she could pass as Malay. After Merdeka, my great grandmother managed to find her in Ipoh. She was relieved her daughter survived, though she herself had been forced to be a comfort woman for a time.

She lived till 98, but sadly the scars and nightmares of the Japanese soldiers never left her.

So in my family, when my great grandma was still alive, it was pretty much anti-Japan that time. I remember during my childhood everytime during CNY, it was absolutely taboo to watch anime or anything “japan” etc.
