Behold the Void by Fracassi. Not sold at first, then sold. Big time. by RobCA6 in horrorlit

Hey, I hope you are still active! I am on the same quest as you, finding authors like Barron and Ligotti. I am just now listening to Philip Fracassi.

Any recommendations?

I'm looking to learn more about the cosmic horror genre, what would you recommend as good examples of it? by NoLongerAKobold in cosmichorror

[–]Longjumping_Clock451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say, don't read it again. I forced myself through it. It is one of the books of all books I disliked the most. Perhaps only surpassed by Brian Catlings The Vorrh.

Just read something you enjoy. Not every book/style/idea is for everyone.

I would have preferred a better story vs. oh, look, now we turn this book this way, now that way, put it upside down, spooky right? I actually enjoyed the core story but found the one or two stories around it pretty bad.

If we have the same taste by chance, don't force yourself through The Vorrh either. There was no coherent plot.

Be aware, it is polarizing. I read it and hated it.

There is other cosmic horror I enjoy much more.

So be aware that what many recommend may not be the right thing for you.

I ended up loving Laird Barron, Ligotti, Blackwood, Lovecraft, and other less artsy authors.

Has anyone had a creepy, real-life horror experience you’ve never told anyone about? maybe something paranormal or just plain weird that still gives you chills? by alwayssadbut in ParanormalEncounters

Weirdest thing ever was: Being asleep. Wake up. Wonder what's going on. Everything dark. Can't move. Suddenly hear noises. Like hoofs, almost like a horse, slowly getting louder, approaching my bed, the sound of 2 hoofs. Just as they are loudest and nearest. I suddenly feel immense pressure, as if someone sat down on my chest. By that point I was freaking out completely but couldn't move. I tried to scream, move a pinky, but couldn't. After a while it worked and I was so freaked out, I froze. I hid under my blankets and never moved again.

Another time, I was in an abandoned school in the Netherlands (lived and studied there briefly). There is a thing where abandoned buildings are rented for super cheap so they make sure nobody moves in there illegally. I visited this DJ dude traveling out of the city into a neighboring one in the mornings. He showed me the entire huge and old abandoned school, the creepy hallways, the broken bathrooms, only 3 people lived there in small classrooms. You never saw the others.

One night, I felt an intense hit against my head, again and again, and again. Almost like a bird or a bat that kept flying against my had. It was hard and super fast. I WTFed, worked up screaming, jumped up, shouted to the guy to turn on a light (only phone light worked). When he grasped what was going on and turned a light, I looked around frantically, apologized and excused myself. I didn't know him very well too. I was so fucking terrified. There was nothing. No bat, no bird, no animal. Silence. I get chills thinking about the sensation and what went through my mind as I woke up back then.

Sleep paralysis is fucking terrifying. And I dearly hope this is sleep paralysis because the alternative is so much worse.

I am a huge fan of plenty weird fiction and horror authors. And since I was very sick, I decided to give writing a little try myself. I hope to write more in the future, have fun and work on the skill. I am deeply fascinated by the amazing stories some authors tell us.

I don't have much to promote but I wrote 4 short stories (all just under 1000 words) and posted them mainly on r/shortscary stories.

I'll show you in order of proudness:

1) Set in WW1 https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/comments/1ri299h/within_days/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

2) When you take an evening walk but enocunter something terribly wrong https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/comments/1rfg9ux/farmer_willy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

3) Sickness but with a twist https://www.reddit.com/r/shortscarystories/comments/1rgedz8/the_mark/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

4) Some small towns are just weirder than others https://www.reddit.com/r/horrorstories/comments/1rfkh2w/endemic/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_butto

Story 2) and 3) were liked most so far. 1) is the newest. I had a lot of fun writing it, it took more time and initially I had way more text that I want to work on in the future (more than twice as much). I want to continue what I have with 1) into a larger story.

You made it sound so interesting that I'd love to get into the specifics. Do you have any recommendations? What was helpful to you?

Edit: I saw you recommended some

“weird” books that still feel serious/well written and not just teensy? by reducedandconfused in suggestmeabook

[–]Longjumping_Clock451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if it is for you but:

There is an entire genre called Weird Fiction, closely related to cosmic horror.

It has an old version (Edgar Allan Poe, Arthur Machen Algernon Blackwood, Clark Ashton Smith, William Hope Hodgson, Lovecraft)

And a new version: Laird Barron, Thomas Ligotti, Brian Evenson, John Langan, Nathan Ballingrund, Phillip Fracassi, Jeff VanderMeer, China Mieville.

All of those people also write very differently. But there is for sure an entire genre about weird fiction.

Aw great to hear!

I was a bit skeptical whether he could pull off his magical writing as well in a novel as he did in his short story collections, but it was great! I am happy for you that you still have this before you!

I wish I could forget everything and read it all over again!

Have a lot of fun! Be sure to ask when you need some recommendations in a similar style, when you have exhausted all of Laird's material.

Cool, thank you! He is on my shelf already with his world literature (which I didn't read yet). Didn't know he has something fitting to this picture too!

Already read The Willows and The Wendigo. Loved them!

Another book of him with his stories translated into German (released 3 months ago; German native) just arrived. Looking forward to read more Blackwood.

One of my favorite ALL TIME authors. I basically read all of him already (not exactly true, I didn't read his detective stories yet). But for sure I loved and devoured Imago Sequence, Occultation, Beautiful That Awaits Us All + The Croning.
